GPL...most exciting corner?

Most exciting corners in GPL

Inspired by a CART race, a poster asked for GPL's most hair-raising corner. Nominations included Eau Rouge and the Masta kink at Spa, the fast downhill bends at Rouen, Flugplatz and other blind sections of the Nurburgring, the Monaco chicane, Kyalami's first turn and Woodcote at Silverstone. The post's unmarked CART race result drew complaints about spoilers.

Hello. Just got back from the Cleveland race (CART). Congrats to Montoya<sp>!!! While listening to the announcer, he mentioned that the first turn at the Cleveland track is probably the most exciting and hair hair-raising corner in this years CART season. And after seeing cars going four abreats to the first turn, I can see why! I've only had GPL for about 2 months now, and the only tracks that I have been racing at were Monza, Silverstone, and Watkins Glen. I was wondering , in your opinion what would be the most hair-raising corner during the start of the race? Just curious. Thanks! -Edmund

The corner of my eye, when I'm starting to play and it spots my old lady coming to tell me some bullshit I couldn't care less about. Hair-rasing doesn't begin to describe it. The only time I don't have a problem with that corner is when she's at work. Tim

definitely, eau rouge. tight AND g-forces everywhere. ouch!
Eau Rouge on Spa it QUITE scary... and the corner after the long straight on Spa, where the houses are on both sides.... Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, all sweaty, realizing that I just had another nightmare about these corners... Andre
Doug Olsen 28 Jun 1999#476596
Eau Rouge is up there for sure, as well as that little right-hand bend at Rouen -- downhill, narrow track, fairly high-speed (for turn one of a race), no runoff area on either side, and close enough to the start that people are still two-a***. Haven't tried it online, but it gets pretty hairy racing the AI with a full field! ------------------ Doug :)

Why is it they think we give a rats ass about what they're wearing when we're in an 8 lap online race at Spa and quickly approaching the Masta kink?!? Aaargghhh! Warlock!
Hoosier 6 28 Jun 1999#476598
I'll probably be in the minority here, but my vote goes to the first turn at Kyalami. Very easy to have a mess there at the start. Scott Moore

Amen to that brother, there I am, in a tense online race with my league and my wife or daughter wanders in ... But to answer the question, I really like Spa myself. In my case the worst is the kink at Monaco, do it right and it just flows, do it wrong and you're minus a wheel and the difference is so small. I tense up everytime I clear the tunnel there. I hate Monaco so bad I've taken to calling it Monica 'cause it just ... well you get the idea :-) Joe
Thanks, I hadn't watched the race yet (taped). Glad to have an unmarked spoiler pop-up in a completely non-related post. Arrrggghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Marc.

Gotta agree with Marc, you got me to. I hate it when I hear who wins a race I have taped. Some of us work on Sundays and have to tape the race. I know you didn't mean to do this on purpose, but please think of us next time and gives us the spoiler heads up. thanks, Randy On Tue, 29 Jun 1999 01:35:51 GMT, "Marc Collins"

My vote is the Masta kink at Spa. Eau Rouge is tough, but the Masta is SCARY! --Dave -- Dave Schwabe "If you're in control, you're not going fast enough" -- Parnelli Jones The Aussie Toad -- GPL Brabham Page http://users.wi.net/~schwabe

Many people say Eau Rouge but that turn is just fun. tap the brakes, slide it out all the way to the hill and turn right into the turn waiting for the hill to get your back end out just in time to miss the incline and then slide out to the edge of the track on the right. I think the hairpin at Rouen is worse since you must go soooo slow and brake while turning. I would also have to vote for the turn after the REAL long straight at Nurburg. I have stuffed it in the bushes many times there. Turn 2 at mosport is also hair raising as you slide towards the edge hoping not to drop off a wheel and go straight into the fence. Hmm I think all tracks have one of those turns. On a final vote I would say Mexico, uhh the track hehe. Well turn 1 is difficult but all the S's are difficult to string together. Jesse

Nurburgring: - Coming from Hatzenbach, over the bridge, going uphill towards Flugplatz: the car gets light, a jump and at that same moment you have to break and start turning right for that fast double right hander... - The fast left hander before Metzgesfeld because it's difficult to see the corner and to find a good break point - ... and - believe it or not - but also that stupid first left hander after the start-finish straight... it's so difficult to find the right breaking point... Francorchamps: From the second section of Burnenville where that corner gets more tight and you have to prepare to take the Malmedy complex as fast as possible because you don't want to lose to much speed for the the straight that follows and goes towards the horrible Masta kink... Monaco: The whole section that starts when you come out the tunnel, take the chicane, the left hander at the Bureau de Tabac and the hairpin before the start-finish straight Rouen: The hairpin: difficult breaking because you still are in that fast left corner There are several other corners on other tracks which are difficult but you can afford te make a little mistake in them without ending up in a fence or a barrier. In the corners I mentioned in the text above, an error is almost always fatal! In the best case, you end up with a broken suspension or a puncture... danny

The first corner after that L-O-O-O-O-NG straight at Kyalami must have been a doozy! -- Regards, Bruce. ------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------------------------
>Nurburgring: >- ... and - believe it or not - but also that stupid first left hander after the >start-finish straight... it's so difficult to find the right breaking point... This one gets me far too often as well! After all the blind stuff, you would think this part of the track would be easy, but for some reason, I ***up here more than just about anywhere else on this huge track. What's really aggravating is when you're trying to do a hotlap and after the 14 mile outlap you get to here and***the pooch on the first turn, causing you to start over! straight I agree with you on this one, too. This whole sequence is the most difficult stuff in GPL for me. With the possible exception of Mexico City - the first turn with the collapsing apex that then sharply reverses to the left with the extra penalty of the concrete tires. Dave Ewing

Woodcote corner at Silverstone can be pretty exciting (Last right hand corner before the start/finish straight) especially if you are on a good lap and trying to take it as fast as possible! Taking it too fast, thus resulting in a four wheel drift slide most of the way around is great to watch on a replay, but not the quickest way around? I agree though, that Eau Rouge (Spa) is awesome if you get it right? (which in my case, is not very often!) Monza's Curva Parabolioca (last *long* right hander before the start/finish straight) is also very exciting if you are trying to really nail it on a fast lap. Seems like you have to wait forever to floor the throttle, and get on the power too quick and off you go! I also think the (very) fast left hander after the (very) long straight at the "Ring" is a great corner. (Sorry cannot remember the name?) Coming at the end of the lap, its one of the key corners in my view. If you manage to come through it fast enough it can make the whole lap, lose it here and the whole lap is wasted. One of the great things about GPL is that there are so *many* great corners, too many to talk about, so get back to the track and practice..... Just my opinion. 8-) *Peter* 8-)

Oh man, I hate that turn... I've taken it flat-out one time before, and on that time, I almost spun out and I almost got airborne (I don't know how! hehe) but when you do get it right, it's a hell of a rush Dan Belcher Team Racing Unlimited

Ooooh how I hate that part.. it would be nice if you could just bash through those picket fences instead of smashing into them as if they were concrete! Another thing I've always wondered: Is that 2nd corner at the Nurburgring the only 270 degree turn in racing? Hot Pants

Not sure about exciting, but I am not on speaking terms with the first turn at Mexico. As for exciting, I doubt anything tops Masta at Spa in a Hine engineered Ferrari... Although I do like that right hander at Zandy where you go across the little bridge.. tottally flat for me if I get it right, and the line has to be absolutely spot on or you must give that little lift to stay on the grey stuff coming out... Everytime I enter the tunnel at Monaco I think...here it comes...I leave the tunnel and take the gentle turn with the rock wall on my right and think...here it comes...I crest the hill and there it is...The dreaded chicane...(if GPL didn't keep me out of the Mediterranean I'd be more waterlogged than James Garner :) Dennis

Since the farthest I've gone is Kyalami (Monza and The Glen also) that has to be the most hair-raising start. Way too tight of a grid, and having to go from the top of 4th gear down to 2nd in a very short distance...I'm just glad it's not 180-80 MPH like it is at full speed!!! -- Kirk Lane Tempe, AZ ICQ: 28171652 RMRL #119

Probably trying out GPL for the first time, Jesse. When the beta (demo) was first released that was the only circuit available. > What were you doing with the beta? > >Watkins Glen first corner ... where I spun for the first time when I tried

Last night at Kyalami I had my best-ever online start - from the second row of the grid I got a flyer (analogue clutch pedal came in handy!) and squeezed right between the two front-row cars into the lead! Then had a great battle with the pole-sitter who was a full 5 seconds faster than anyone else in qualifying, but it's pretty tough to overtake at Kyalami! I got the win but we had a hell of a dice at T1 when he got inside me but drifted wide on exit. Phew - I'm still shaking thinking about it!

Watkins Glen is a real pain in my oppinion. Specially the loop and big bend make me study hayballs up close. So IMHO The Loop and Big Bend are some of the most hair-raising corners in GPL -- Olav K. Malmin remove spam when replying
