Now that we have Brands Hatch thanks to Dave...does this mean the Monza high banks are possible...i would attempt something myself but i have NO idea what im doing when it comes to that stuff. Just curious as to the possibility of this happening? Chris
I have two answers for you: 1- Yes, I'm sure you will someday be able to race the banked Monza oval in GPL, in fact with some people's current knowledge of track editing it would be rather easy; 2- You won't be able to run on both the road circuit and banked oval at the same time. GPL won't allow it. :o( Frank Francois Dubuc, Simulator ***world, [link lost in import: /***world/]

Okay, you'll prove me wrong very quickly I'm sure, but Bull Run consists of banking & road course? Different thing, I guess :) Rob Oh, I don't know! Does anyone actually read these sig's anyway!? "You will respect my awforataaaay!"

this problem with ruinning banked and road tracks has nothing to do with the mix of track types (or the karusel and swalbewazzit at the ring wouldnt work!) it is to do with the cross over where the banking goes over the track, gpl cannot cope with one car on top of the other (this can be shown by going to silverstone in a race and drive over the bridge on farm straight, the other cars will hit you! unfortuante but hey hopefully we can have other track designs that are works of a genius such as oulton Park, donnington, lemans (the 24h circuit so we can all do peter dumbrecks), suzuka(although it wouldnt work because of the crossover!), etc, i can hardly wait! thanks again dave! ruby
<snipped some stuff I agree with> Actually I have my doubts about that one, I still think it's a very good possibility. Many people have looked at Silverstone and ruled it as out of the question, but they must remember: THEY ARE DRIVING OVER THE SAME TRACK SECTION! They are driving on an object in that track section, which I believe would be the reason the cars slow down (they say oh boy car in this section is right in front of me and it doesn't check if it's over them or not). Now the banking would be of different track section which means the car would not be in front of it (would only know it as in section blah), which leads me to believe it's still so very possible; but again I could be wrong...but I doubt that I am. ;-) Probably shouldn't have said that, but hey it's either Dave or I that can do the trk so if he feels like saving me time and backing me up I'll be more than happy to see him create that track. :-) > Francois Dubuc, > Simulator ***world, > [link lost in import: /***world/] -- Jon Van Ginneken "I try to do my best every day. You mean no Grand Prix (the movie) over/under racing into a head-on with the other half of the field? Dang. I agree, but this is only part of the problem. This remains to be verified, but I think the way GPL's engine is coded you'd get a "cutting course" penalty if you'd ride the inner banking at full speed. Plus, I think the game is gonna have some trouble with driving track sections in a non-sequential way... The front stretch is used for both the oval and the road course, so unless I misunderstand you they'd still hold the same section offset number wether you're on the oval or on the road course... How would GPL be able to figure out wich lap you're on? Hell... There are too many unknowns to say for sure that it's completely impossible, but I'd say it's rather unlikely at this point in time... Wanna prove me wrong Jon? Please do! ;o) Frank Francois Dubuc, Simulator ***world, [link lost in import: /***world/]

Hehe it's Jon vs. Francois in the ultimate TRK and 3DO fight ;-P Francois, you could always divide the frontstretch and putting a wall in the middle of it so you can limit the track. Back in those years from the pictures I saw there was a line painted on the track, so people weren't really racing on the same stretch, they just used half of it. An Armco can easily be added, no ? :) -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -- Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -- May the Downforce be with you... We have a little thing in the States called innocent until proven guilty...so I say it's possible until we know otherwise. :-) Why? If you don't put up those markers it can't say you cut the course (there aren't any in Monza now, why would you need them?). Also I believe the first number in the checkpoint deal is the distance you have covered on the track up till that point...if that doesn't match it wouldn't be tripped right? Like he other Francios said, just thow in a barrier in there, lord knows we can't have everything perfect. Only problem that makes is you must complete an oval lap before you take the green out of the pits. I'd do it, but I'm working on a cool hometown track that I think will prove to have very intense racing which should see many driver mistakes which will allow for more than the follow the leader deal. The track in real life is one of the hardest on brakes in real life...so it'll be fun in GPL I'm sure. <VBG> To find out all that's needed is a small figure-eight/overpass oval which could be made in a short amount of time in a few weeks/months. > Francois Dubuc, > Simulator ***world, > [link lost in import: /***world/] -- Jon Van Ginneken "I try to do my best every day. Frank worte about Monza problem: <cut crossing and inner banking> Actually, the tribune straight was divided in two seperate sections by a safety barrier. Maybe it is possible to define the left part and the right part of the straight to be two seperate sections in GPL. Han
Ya may be right... Francios? <G> Anyway, you'd still have to cross from left to right at some point, or maybe I'm mistaken in thinking that the cars were crossing... Oh... Uh... Hmmm... If they don't cross on the front straight then it may be possible... Can anyone enlighten me on this? Question is: Do the cars exit parabolica then enter the inner banking, or is it that they continue on the straight to curva grande? I thought it was the second one, so then if I'm wong you'll understand why I was saying it shouldn't be possible... Hehehe... We're waiting! Interesting project... Maybe we should try this in an ICR2 track, since building up a new track.3do file is still out of my reach at this point... Now that I think of it, I might have problems with an ICR2 3DO as well... Awww forget it! If any 3DO guru wants to give this test a shot... Frank Francois Dubuc, Simulator ***world, [link lost in import: /***world/]

When exiting Parabolica, you'll see a barrier (I think it's red) at the left. That's where the oval comes on the main straight. It leaves the main straight at the right. So, if you run the full 10 km track (road course + oval), you'll start at the left side of the straight (the grid is at the right in GPL, too) and head for the the Curva Grande and the rest for the roadcourse. Then, after Parabolica, you'll enter the straight at the right, don't cross the straight and enter the banking at the right of the track. Finally, after completing the oval, you'll enter the straight at the left again to cross start/finish and enter Curva grande. grtn, hgrm.
Well thanks for enlightening me Hans! <G> Then I guess it could be possible, if we assume that GPL doesn't track x,y,z positions for cars in it's collision algorithm... That still remains to be seen... Would anyone stand up and do that damn 8 shaped track? <VBG> Frank Francois Dubuc, Simulator ***world, [link lost in import: /***world/]
<snip> i before o, except after...of that's I before e. Sorry about that, but I am not the # 1 grammatical person in the world. Spelled one of my bestest friend's name wrong for 3 years! :-) The other Francois showed me a picture of it. You cross the S/F line on the outside of the straight, do a lap around the road course. you come out of parabolica, keep to the right and go around the oval once and come out on the outside of the S/F straight and complete a lap...they would have to do this or else you could confuse Timing and Scoring guys. <snip> It wouldn't work in ICR2, I know that...
