Can you give me an idea what framerates your achieving in GPL? What
Motherboard/Graphics card are using with your AMD chip?
BTW, I'm considering the AOpen AX59Pro and a Voodoo 3 3000, but unsure about
which chip route to take, K6-2 or 3.
Cheers,
Craig

I had a AMD K6-2 333....I was an advocate of the AMD offerings...then
I got a Celeron.....oooooh la la. Do yourself a huge favor...get a
Celeron the Floating Point is what you need in GPL and it rocks. I
basically doubled my framerate by going to a Celeron 366 oc'd to
458....with dual Voodoo2's. (which were underutilized in the AMD).
If you dont believe that I was a AMD supporter then go to my page and
see my pages dedicated to my AMD. Also dont believe the hype about the
different motherboards for socket 7. They are all huge headaches with
owners needing to jump thru all kinds of hoops to get simple
usability. Then I hooked up my Abit Bh6 and no hoops no muss no
fuss....just rocking fast framerates and instant compatibility.

I have a K6-2 300 with a 8MB Voodoo2 and I can get 36fps with some details
turned off and all 19 cars. I'm using an ASUS P5 A-B with 64 MB PC100
memory.

K6-2 400 with Rendition 8MB. AFAIR Epox Motherboard with VIA MP3
chipset. 128 MB PC100.
Offline: 36fps with 19AI in 800x600
Online: 36fps in 640x480.
K6-233 with Voodoo1: 20-30 fps. Not good.

if you want to get a amd chip wait for the k7 to come out and buy a k6-3 475
at a cheap price, im gonna buy a amd cuz i cant afford a p2 450 or p3 500!

I have a AMD K6-2/350 and a 12MB Voodoo2. But since I don't want to go
for another motherboard upgrade this year,I'm just going to purchase a AMD
K6-3/450.

Right. Which explains why I never agreed with your AMD hype :-)

I don't use an AMD chip in this current machine, but I can offer an
educated guess: when GPL came out a few months ago, people noted that
L2 cache size and speed are important for good framerates. Therefore,
the K6-3 with its fast on-chip L2 cache should be considerably better
suited for GPL than an k6-2 - especially if you also have a board with
a great L2 cache, which will then operate as L3 cache. This might
already be overkill, though, and the K6-3 is much more expensive than
the K6-2.
Having said this, I'm by no means sure I would buy an AMD based system
for GPL. From what I read here, it seems as if an intel Celeron
powered machine (400 MHz or more) delivers a bigger bang for the buck.
I have a nice super socket 7 board (FIC VA 503+) which I intend to
keep using, so for me, the upgrade route is clear: K6-2 400 (or more)
or K6-3 400 (or more) if they become much cheaper. But if I were to
build a new machine, I would buy a configurable slot 1 mainboard with
the BX chipset and a Celeron 400 (with slot 1 adaptor) now. With the
Celeron, you're limited to slower bus speeds, but this is not that
important once your L2 cache is on-chip.
As for graphics cards: the Voodoo 3 seems to be the logical choice
when your main concern is GPL. BTW, what's the difference between the
V3 2000, 3000, and 3500? Do they differ a lot hardware-wise, or is the
main difference in the software bundle?

I'd say:
If you're going to use a super socket 7 mainboard and AMD, you should use a rendition
graphics board. These cards are way less heavy on the CPU, and my guess is that you
can easily get36 fps with a fast AMD and super socket7 and a Thriller card. And go for
a 8MB card, as you avoid frequent texture thrashing.
I am using a Stealth II card, outdated and cheap, but it still manages to spit out the
graphics needed (all graphics on, mirrors as well) at 36 fps with 640x480, also when
in the middle of the field on the grid. I have a PII Celery oc. to 450, but I probably
would get the same fps with an AMD solution.
If you want Voodoo cards, you would need a PII because the voodoo cards are only as
fast as the CPU...
And I have heard that the floating point unit of the new AMD K6-3 is a major
improvement.

They are basically the same, but work at different clockspeeds. Just a
matter of quality of the components just like with CPUs.

You're kidding right? I too have a k6-2 300, but with a 12mb Voodoo and
64mb and can only get up to 36fps if I turn almost every detail off
except the absolutely necessary and reduce all cars to 8:(

There is a minor improvement if that...
From a former AMD K6-2 333 owner...dont be misled into getting a
AMD....the Celeron is much much quicker in GPL.

climbs back to 30 to 37 by first turn, extremely pleased with chip,mb, and
video card
Thats neat, I was also pleased as pudding with my K6-2 333.....but
alas for AMD the Celeron blows it into the weeds. That floating point
action is important....
Let me just say I was pleased with my AMD and Shocked Shitless by my
Celeron 366...thats been running wonderfully well at 458 forever.
I only respond not to get into a debate with you but to help others
avoid the expensive mistake I made by trying to make the AMD as fast
at the Celeron in Floating Point intensive games. Its a entire
culture of people attempting to say that this or that tweek makes the
AMD as fast as the Celeron finally....those tweeks never work and the
celeron user just has to plug his puter in and he is fast. And lets
not even get to all the fun of setting up Non Intel Chipsets...

I had a K62-300 oc'd to 350 w/a 8mb Thriller on a DFI Super
7 motherboard...I could get 36fps in training with most
graphics turned on at 640x480. However, at the back of a
full grid at Monza I could only get abou 12-13. If I cut
way back on graphics I could get up to about 18 on the grid
and up to 30 or so by the first Lesmos. It made for some
pretty exciting first lap!
I've recently switched to a celeron 400a on an abit bx6
mobo and it rocks!!! No comparison. I haven't even tried
to oc it yet but I get 36 fps all the time and 30 at the
back of the grid. In 800x600 it drops to 28. Still with
the Rendition card. Plus I had lots of mobo and
compatability problems. I could not recommend the AMD.
