GPL patch size, versions and Glide 2.54 problems

Papyrus's Randy Cassidy said the US GPL 1.1 patch would be about 800K, released in six language versions, with only the US version not requiring the CD. He explained that GPL's problems with Glide 2.54 stem from a function 3dfx broke and acknowledged, which GPL uses for the cursor and mirrors, so the game could not fix it. Users reported the newer Quake 3-ready Voodoo2 drivers worked well with GPL.

Hello boys, Here you can find the readme of the GPL patch: [link lost in import] How big will the patch be?? I have a 56K modem, so........:-)) -- Groetjes Kees
Personally Im overjoyed to see that the minimum ride height has been raised to 2.50 inches. Quick question though, if the ride height is set to only 2.50, will the cars get the same false advantage that they could with 1.00 inch ride height?? i.e. the so-called "zero-compliance" setup?? Looking forward to the patch, Thomas JS Brown
What, two versions of the patch? Will the European version be out at the same time? What are the differences by the way?
McKafre 08 Jun 1999#472561
more than two I think ... I have the spanish version :) I heard all the patches will be out at the same time, not like Links99, I ve links99 spanish version with US 1.2 patch ... some menus in english, some in spanish , but works fine .... :) McKafre De La Rosa
There will be 6 versions (US, UK, French, German, Spanish, Italian). The only differences will be (a) the language, (b) the US version is the only one that doesn't require the CD to play (same as out-of-the-box), and, possibly, (c) how the patch is packaged up for download/installation. Oh, and when it's released, don't bother trying to patch your European version with the US patch. It won't let you. Randy

Is there a market for US GPL exports? Just wondering. Keith.

My apologies if I missed this in the readme or previous discussions, but will the patch fix the problems with the Voodoo2 cards so we can run the latest drivers? I am currently using old 3Dfx reference drivers instead of the latest Diamond Monster drivers since only with the old drivers will GPL run at all. It still crashes much too often. my understanding is it will. Tony

The problem with Glide 2.54 is with the 3Dfx drivers themselves, not with the game, so we really can't fix it. Sorry. Randy

On Tue, 08 Jun 1999 18:24:15 GMT, "Randy Cassidy" Don't want to***anyone off, but if the Glide 2.54 drivers are broken why is it that GPL is the only sim (I know of) having a problem? And do later driver versions work with GPL (have heard they do for some, don't for others)?

I'm running the latest Q3-ready V2 reference drivers, and GPL runs fine. This is on a brand new install of Win98 and GPL with no legacy files on the system.

This raises a question. A lot of us with the UK version have a no cd patch. How will this be affected ? Mark

Well, I guess GPL must be the only sim (that you know of) that uses the Glide functions that are broken in version 2.54. Specifically, the way we draw the cursor, and the way we draw the mirrors both rely on this broken function. 3Dfx has acknowledged that they did, indeed, break this function in Glide 2.54. Don't want to***anyone off, but why did this happen? This same problem existed in the gold drivers that shipped with all Voodoo 2 boards around the time of GPL's release. We reported this problem to 3Dfx before then, they identified the problem, and by the time GPL was released they had fixed it in Glide 2.53 (might've been 2.52). Now iiiiit's bAAAaaaaack in Glide 2.54. From what I've read on this group, 3Dfx's Quake 3 compatible drivers (see [link lost in import] do work properly with GPL. I haven't tested them myself. YMMV. On Tue, 08 Jun 1999 19:38:21 GMT, "Randy Cassidy" Listen Randy, I was asking a question and prefaced it with a "don't jump on me for simply asking" as I semi-expected a curt reply. I didn't understand why GPL had a problem with newer Glide drivers whist the other 10-15 Glide sim/games I have don't. There you go! You told me why GPL has a problem, thanks ever so much! a bit more sarcasm... I've read the same thing here, apparently its still the same situation. Thank you for the answers, hope no one else "irritates" you today. G. Patricks

Speak for yourself, you seem the person "irritated" in this thread. He simple answered you in a correct way. This is to everybody.. will the Q3-compatible new drivers be able to : - Run GPL at least the same quality than the 2.53 drivers - Run Viper Racing without the polygon misses of the 2.53drivers - Run most if not all the D3D and/or Glide racing sims correctly ? -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -- Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -- May the Downforce be with you... >Listen Randy, I was asking a question and prefaced it with a "don't >jump on me for simply asking" as I semi-expected a curt reply. And you didn't get a curt reply. It was informative and polite, though perhaps a slight measure of exasperation with 3dfx quality assurance could be detected. Good question , I wish I knew the answer !!!! If the patch stuffs up the No CD utility, then the US GPL.exe (If we can get it) would probably be a way around it. Anyone know ???? -- Ian Parker

I'm using the new Q3 drivers with a Maxi-Gamer V2 on a PII400, 128, SB Live and Win 98. This is on a system that has been upgraded from a Pure3D and an Ensonic PCI64 and has had tons of games and demos installed and removed, so god knows what my registry looks like<g>. So far, after a week of use, I've run GPL, Viper Racing, F1RS, MGPRS(demo), Colin McRae, TOCA2(demo), SCGT and NFS3 without one lockup. - I haven't noticed any loss of quality or frame rate in GPL with the Q3 drivers. - Viper Racing looks smooth as glass at 800x600. I'm happy -don

Now I finally found a reason to buy GPL a second time. I'm going to order the US version of GPL tomorrow... bye, bye, Sierra Germany. ;^) l8er ronny -- Your mouse has moved. Randy, since I posted that note, I have downloaded the Glide 2.53 driver file from http://grandprix2.ga-sports.com/gpl/, which is "The Fast Lane" GPL site. This has completely (as near as I can tell) fixed the Voodoo2 problem. What is so irritating is that it was such a minor fix to drop one file into the GPL directory. I wish I had know about it earlier. I have enjoyed the challenge of GPL since I first got it when it was released, but I had to run in software mode. Now with 3Dfx the game looks fantastic at 800x600 with all graphics on. I only drop below 20 fps at the starts, and on the straights I am at the 36 fps limiter. Now, if I only could keep from crashing so often!

*snip* I have the following list of racers (not all strictly sims) running without problems on my Creative Voodoo 2 SLI rig running the Q3 compatible drivers- GPL Viper Racing SBK Motocross Madness NFS 3 NASCAR 1999 (Windows version only) and most of EA Sports 99 titles, some flight sims, and some 3d shooters. The only programs that I had problems with were N23dfx/DOS NR1999 (reproduced on 4 systems)- works one time per bootup, if you try to start it a second time, a black screen and hard lock resulted. (Workaround- copy the glide2x.ovl file from the Creative install CD to the game directory, works like a charm) Starsiege- Kernel32 error when the new 3dfx splash screen tries to start. I disabled the splash screen and it works fine. One thing I (believe to) have recognized - and not on your list: MGPRS2 gets stutter in the landscape. Jens

Yep I get that too. This is on a PIII 450 with 128 MEG RAM. It's worse on my new Savage 4 32 MEG than on My Voodoo 2 12 MEG. Especially when going round corners the landscape jerks across the screen. Also I have run the complete 99 season install off the Unoffical MGPRS2 site and the audio is good but as the car goes along there is a click as if there was a stone stuck in a tire type of sound. In other words repetitive. Also I have an SBLive! and there is a problem that causes the audio to drop to half volume on the mixer slider. There was a correction that said to modify an ini file but you had to change two lines not one as offered here. Both the default = line and the in (something)= line to be the same. I'm sorry I can't remeber it exactly but I'm at work and anyone who's tried it without success should know what I'm talking about.
