Can anyone explain to me why I can't copy the GPL cd-rom? Even using a 700
MB disk does not seem to solve the problem!
Any suggestions or am I doing something completely wrong?
PR essence
Copying the GPL CD: backups, piracy and European copy protection
A user asked why he could not copy his GPL CD, and several replies assumed he was pirating it. Others defended the legal right to a backup copy, noted that European versions of GPL require the CD to play as copy protection, and Iain Mackenzie said he had backed up the European version using Nero's overburning. The thread drifted into CD-R tips and spelling corrections.
Automated summary.
Yes your doing something completely wrong. Copying is illegal.

You have European version! It's some kind of a copy protection. I had to buy
a new cd-rom drive just to install the game! Papy/Sierra doesn't trust
Europeans.
Borut
i hope you are not copying the game to give to friends who are yet to try
the gpl experience- if so it is actions like this that are to blame for
papys semingles droping of the game, they have not made as much money on the
game and making copys further shrinks their revenue, this will make them
less inclined to make a gpl2.
The thing you're doing that is completely wrong is trying to copy a
commercial CD-ROM. Despite all the excuses given, I think that if
CD-ROMs are stored and handled properly there is NO reason for an
average consumer to make 'safety copies'.
Funny you mention copy protection on CD. I just read (somewhere) Microsoft
will begin using some sort of copy protection on all of there products very
soon. This protection will not copy to another CD and is neccesary to run
the proggie. Personally, I'm so sick of blatant copyright infrigment by the
"warez" crowd that I really don't even mind! Take a trip over to the NG
3DFX.products.voodoobanshee to see what I mean. Some punk named commOdog is
always bragging about his theft of not only S/W but music, pictures, etc
etc. His daddy needs to take his 'puter away! For some reason this guy
reminds me of the term "Trenchcoat Mafia". The inmates are in charge, OH

Why jump to that conclusion? He may want a backup or to avoid having
to find the CD every time he wants to play thanks to the stupid copy
protection foisted upon the Europeans.
Apart from ***games my two pet hates are a) games that _force_ you
to install into their "Company_name" directory (I hate even suggesting
it, but forcing you is unforgivable) and b) copy protection on
CDs that force you to find the game and put it in the drive in order
to play - European GPL has BOTH of these.
Given that and the chance the CD could become damaged and fail to read
with all the additional handling (especially with today's faster, more
sensitive readers) I don't see why everyone is getting all righteous
and finger-pointing.
As for the original poster, I'd suggest getting a hold of the US "EXE"
file and burning a CD using that - it'll work then.
Cheers!
John
As a backup copy - honestly, please don't start flaming me - I copied the
European version of my GPL with no trouble at all. I used Yamaha 4416S and
NERO 4.0.3 overburning onto a standard 74min CDR.

Why is everyone assuming this guy is burning illegal copies of the game? You
all say to support Papy and all that stuff but that doesn't mean he isn't. I
make backup copies of all my favorite games and store them in a safe place
just because I _always_ misplace a CD for a decent amount of time.
--
Tony
Its not illegal or wrong to copy a CD you paid for. Its illegal and wrong
to use that CD to give to someone else. I had a situation where I had a CD
get scratched and I couldnt reload the software. It took me 7 weeks to get
it replaced!
There is NOTHING wrong with having a copy of software if you have paid for
it. Distributing it is another story.

We do have the right to create one backup copy of any software that we
purchase. If the copy protection that is being used now by Sierra (an
others) prevents this then Sierra (and others) should include in their fine
print words to the effect that they will supply us with a replacement CD at
no cost to us in the event that the purchased item fails for ANY
reason....and that includes being chewed by the dog.

>Yes your doing something completely wrong. Copying is illegal.
I have a confession to make...
Right now, in the other room, in the CD drive of my wife's computer, is a COPIED
cd of JumpStart Baby. I made the copy the same day I bought the CD, before I
even installed the game on the computer. When the FBI comes to my door to haul
me off to prison for being a software pirate, I will have to tell them the same
thing I am telling you:
My soon-to-be two year old daughter loves to push the 'open' button on the CD
drive on my wife's computer. In fact, she loves to push the 'open' buttons on
both my regular CD drive and my CDRW, too, my computer is just harder to get at.
Sometimes, is there is a CD in the drive (like perhaps Jumpstart Baby..because
she is playing with it) and sometimes she takes the CD out.
I don't know if the 2 year olds around your house understand the concept of
"proper handling and storage", but mine doesn't. Her idea of proper handling
and storage includes rubbing the CD on herself, on the desk, on the computer, on
the monitor, on the floor and across the gritty kitchen floor, data side down.
It also includes biting the CD, putting it in oatmeal or yogurt, leaving it
around for one of the dogs to "investigate", pushing it under the refrigerator
and once, even dropping it through the spaces between the planks on the 2nd
floor deck so it fell to the concrete 12 feet below, where I found it about 3
days later. The original of that particular CD now hangs when it tries to read
the disk because it has a bunch of deep scratches and divots on it, so I use the
COPY I made to run the program I bought.
Since I am aware that she does this, I copy all the CDs I buy as soon as I get
them. I try not to leave CDs in the drives on any of the computers so as to
minimize the chance that she will 'handle and store' them in her own special
way. Who exactly am I ripping off by protecting my investment this way? I
learned my lesson long ago with a new computer that had a funky floppy drive. I
installed all of my favorite software on it, including Visual C+1.5, trueSpace
2, and a partition with OS/2 Warp, all using diskettes. The floppy drive ruined
every diskette I put in it while it read them. Because I never copied the
diskettes and installed from the originals, I lost all that software. I swore
that would never happen again, and now it won't because I legally copy every CD
I buy. CDs are nothing more than another form of data storage, and if it is and
was legal to copy diskettes, it is legal to copy CDs.
blah blah blah.

And I've got a bridge for sale...Whether or not it is legal to make a copy for the purpose described depends
upon the individual license agreement for the software in question. Some
are so specific to state that you must use the copy as the backup, and work
from the original. In many cases it was illegal to copy diskettes for
backup purposes too (from experience). Sometimes the license is worded to
disallow backup and require you to repurchase software if original disks are
damaged (Novell was once worded this way, for instance).
I AM familiar with having a two year old that likes pushing buttons and
walking off with the surprises found, and understand the situation. It does
not, however, exempt you from the obligations of the software license for
those titles from which copying is banned. Personally, I make a copy of all
originals for which a copy is permitted, but once learned the hard way to
check the license before starting up the CDRW drive (or the floppy drive at
the time).
Michael
By law you are allowed to do exactly that. The rule is there should be no
instance where both the original and the copy are in use at the same time. I do
exactly the same since my kids use my various computers and tend not to be the
best at putting CD's away!
P.S.......this didn't help when my duaghter's Barbir game couldn't be copied no
matter which siftware I tried. Of course she ended up scrathing the orginal!

And I've got a bridge for sale...I think you will find, In Australia anyway, that it doesn't matter what they
claim on the licence. The Copyright law supercedes it and allows for the backup
of program CD's and diskettes as long as there is no time when both the backup
and original are in use at the same time.
Remember back in the dim, dark ages when programs like DBase had copy counters
on the diskettes! Everytime you installed it it removed a licence from the
diskette. You had to then recover the licence from a PC if you were upgrading or
whatever. Good idea until your hard disk crashed and the licence couldn't be
recovered. I remember a very large Australian company going to court to protect
their right to copy these diskettes, using a hardware bit copier. They won and
that was way back in the early mid 80's.

not really a big deal and less the hassle of having to transfer all the data
back on to your hard drive, etc...

You probably can't install or play a game from a tape drive, so the backup would
be pretty useless. A lot of CDs need a CD to be in the drive, etc.
You also might be unaware that you don't need a CD re-writer to burn CDs, just
to 'erase' and re-write CDs already burned on the drive. It took me the longest
time to tell helpful but clueless friends that I didn't need all their
commercial CDs they got from AOL, etc. because I couldn't erase them and
(re)write over them.

Don't know what you are on about! Why don't you refer to my reply earlier (4
June) about how easily I backed up the European version of GPL?
Keep an eye on the thread!
Iain
Hmmm..... I'm from Europe, had I not installed the game crack, I would need
my CD to play GPL.... Okay Monday morning I get up to find my CD has been
eaten by my dog, I send to Sierra UK for another CD, lets say 2 days
postage.... ok, Sierra recieve my enquiry, and put it in a little tray
marked "To Do." It sits there, for between 2 days, to a month, however long
Sierra see fit. Ok so now Sierra organise something, something needs to be
sent to stores, and sent back, then stores despatch my CD.....
Two days postage....
HOW LONG MUST I LIVE WITHOUT GPL???
Jeez man, give it up, if he ain't selling it, what the hell does it matter?
MY GOD!!! I know for one that living with no GPL is no fit life for a man.
Besides.... If he makes his own copy, Sierra won't need to spend the money
on the CD, hence - they make n3 *HINT HINT HINT - to papy*
Cheers!

It would be helpful if they did this. A friend of mine could not get his
Colin McRae Rally to work after a while because of the CD scratches, and
Codemasters (the publisher) would NOT replace it even for a nominal
charge.
They told him to take it back to the retailer! Thats really going to
make him think twice about buying their games in future.
Incidently, the GPL copy protection is such that I cannot install it
either from the CD recorder on my main machine, nor from a CD drive on a
networked machine. This I need to do if my CD drive on my main machine
stops working (which it seems to do occasionally).

I can totally appreciate Sierra (and others, of course) wishing to protect
their considerable investment in preventing the unauthorised and illegal
distribution of software pirated from their products.
However, I cannot subscribe to a "Catch 22" situation being in place which
allows us to make a backup, and even install from it, but not play the game
with it!
I suppose that the only way around this is to "ghost" your game directory to
a Gold CD as soon as you've installed it. . Okay...that saves the data
being lost if the dog chomps the CD but it still doesn't get around having
to insert the original in order to play the game.
Unless you've run a crack that does away with the need to insert the CD.
Which brings us back to where we started!! :o)
