I went to the following web site www.motorsims.com. The makers of AMA
Superbikes will be making a Can-Am game after their first title is
released. This is very interesting!

Notable threadMotorsims announces a Can-Am sports-prototype sim
Philster spotted that Motorsims, maker of AMA Superbike, planned a Can-Am racing game. Motorsims's Bob McCarthy and Mark S. Miller explained it would model the current SCCA Can-Am and sports-prototype classes with real tracks and licensed manufacturers such as Ferrari, possibly with historic cars as a later free upgrade, and Miller hoped to have it running online by the next Rolex 24. Fans reminisced about the 1960s-70s Can-Am, Chaparrals and McLarens.

Motorsims will be bringing Can-Am racing straight to your computer for
intense online adrenaline pumping racing action!
Intense on-line... well It's nice to see games other than Nascar2 coming out
that are claiming to have big-time on-line support. Perhaps this is the game

Hmmm...let's see, if it's a modern day sim we'll have the choice of a Riley and
Scott chassis with a Ford V-8 and a Riley and Scott chassis with a Chevy V-8.
Lot's of options there, could be about as exciting as Viper Racing<g>. Let's
hope they can license the Ferrari 333SP.
Then again. maybe some of the excellent hackers out there can come up with some

It is the current CanAm (World Sports Cars). Not the "real" CanAm series

Where did you get this information from? I'm looking at the page for the
game right now and it doesn't say one way or the other. There is a
picture of a modern WSC car on the page but I wouldn't take that to
necessarily mean the game itself is this era.

The answer is, yes there will be a CanAm game but will include much more
than CanAm cars. Think of it as a "prototype" style of sim with Spec Racer

Dunno, but I'd love to see both the classic CanAM cars and the WSC cars
along with their respect tracks to be available. :) That, besides a modern
CART sim :?, would be ideal for me. :)

> Where can I get more information on Can-Am racing? What era is it?
Don't know of any websites dedicated to the glory days of Can-Am, but there
are some excellent books:
"Can-Am" by Pete Lyons (Motorbooks International) is essential to your
racing library.
And there are a couple of very good books dedicated to Jim Hall and his
Chaparral cars -
"Chaparral" by Richard Falconer with Doug Nye (and foreward by Denny Hulme)
(Motorbooks International)
"Chaparral - Can-Am & Prototype Race Cars" by Dave Friedman (foreward by Jim
Hall) (Motorbooks International)
In brief, the Can-Am was a very popular series that ran from 1966 to 1974.
The spirit of the series was, at first, anything goes, leading to some very
innovative designs. The greatest innovator was Jim Hall and his Chaparral
cars - the wing, the ground effects "sucker", etc. The cars were sports
cars, at least in name (fenders, passenger seats) that raced on road courses
in the USA and Canada - Riverside, Mosport, Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca,
Bridgehampton, St. Jovite, Elkhart Lake .... Most of the great drivers of
the era competed - McLaren, Hulme, Surtees, Donahue, Hall, Phil Hill, Amon,
Jackie Stewart ....
Denny Hulme even called it the greatest road racing series ever.

The first incarnation will be current day Can-Am. We're sending someone out
to the Mid-Ohio race this weekend, in fact. The official press release and
some early screens should be on the web site in the coming weeks. At the
lower end of the game will be the Spec Racer Ford, and there'll likely be a
middle class of something like CSR or S2000. This is not only to add depth,
but also to make it a more progressive learning experience. And, yes, we
will support endurance races - online and offline - including all the
darkness and crappy weather that can go with them.
Also on the slates is a "retro-pack" to "the Real Can-Am." This is the game
I'm dying to play as well. These are the cars I grew up watching as a kid -
I still remember building plastic models of Chaparrals. So, the bottom line
is, there won't be any hacking needed. Since we're doing all these bizarre
controller setups for Superbike, it'll be snap to map a spare joystick or
throttle axis to control the rear wing. And, I'm sure our physics guys will
get a kick out of modeling the Shadow.

they just need to get more teams running the car to get the bugs worked out.
Sounds like their situation in Cart as well.
As far as the Kudzu though, how much longer can Jim Downing go on slogging
around with those Mazda engines without any results? He must have sunk millions
into the program with very little to show for it. I do admire his
determination, but it seems the rulesmakers are never going to let him build a
winner.
Mark, thanks for the information. This sounds like an excellent product, and if
it does come to fruition, sign me up for multiple copies. I can't wait to crest
the hill at turn 7 at Riverside in a Sunoco Blue 917/30K I also like the idea
of including a couple of training classes. Spec-Fords and Sports 2000 cars
would be loads of fun<g>.

I also like the idea
Well if the do Spec Racers right everyone will stop complaining about the
AI in SCGT being aggressive and somtimes stupid. I think in the Spec Racer
GCR there must be a rule that you have to hit anohter driver at least once
each session, since they lean on eachother so much.

I can't really discuss our business model, but we do a lot more than simply
license the manufacturer's and track's names. We want to represent the SCCA

Excellent point.
Absolutely
Can-Am died with the Maclaren M20 - the year that the Porsche turbos came to
the fore. This was 1972-3. With turbos on the horizon, the days of the big

hopefully, but remember that the end user must be pleased. Granted the
Coventry and Masurama aren't perhaps a Lotii, but GPL wouldn't be the same
game w/o their inclusion just because Papyrus/Sierra/whomever and those
parties could not come to licensing agreements. Dont forget the
end-user..:) If the current WSC makes an appearance in the game, people
WILL want to drive those Ferraris and I dare say a many unhappy bunch of
people will rant and rave if a Ferrari or Ferrariesque (applies to other
manufacturers too) cars are unavailable. :)
A virtual Rolex24 going on at the same time as the real Rolex24...now that
would rock. :)

I admire your approach, and I hope Ferrari (and ALL the manufacturers
and sponsors) will cooperate fully. If not, though, I think Chris is
right -- it's a crime to forget your end-users. Integrity must come
first, I understand, but if you can't get agreements with everybody,
you probably should consider generic substitites at least for the sake
of additional variety.

I guess my comment wasn't taken in the way I intended. We don't feel we need
to have ersatz manufacturer names thanks to our relationships within the
racing world. Having a current day Can-Am game with the Ferrari would be
like ... well ... having any other road racing game without the Ferrari. It
just wouldn't be Right.
Again, keep in mind what our press releases have said. We have
*partnerships* with the AMA and SCCA. Not just name licensing. To properly
represent the organizations which run the series, we need to have access to
the manufacturers and teams who do the racing.
