Engines and Motors

With all this talk about physics/graphics engines on this NG I thought i'd comment on the use of the word "Motor" in regard to Nascar. To me a motor uses watts/amps/volts and an Engine uses Carbs/Gas/plugs. So where does that leave the term physics/graphics "engine" in relation to the above statement. Being a second gen cal/okie I know "Motor is interchangeable w/engine but...lol Man I'm bored today :) Mitch Alatorre naman TEN/NROS Team Tachyon

I like your point and maybe I'm a little bored too but here's a twist. Being a fuel head I agree that a carbed, fuel-injected, turbo and/or supercharged internal combustion engines are "engines" not "motors". So why do we say "motorbikes". I would prefer that the world be retrained to saying "Enginebikes" but I'm not Bill Gates so motorbikes it is. I own a Nissan Skyline GTS 2.0 Litre Twin Cam inline six, which buy fuel injected non-turbo standards are reguarded as high performance and one should think twice about picking on one at the lights. The engines in these Skyline GTS's are the basis of the Skyline GTR "Godzilla" 4 WD Twin Turbos that out ran the 5.0 litre V8's at the Australian Bathhurst 100 k race in 1990 ??. They were banned from the race. There is a quite a few here in New Zealand and in fact a 2.6 litre version in the lastest NZ Performance Car mag features one that was clocked at 310 KPH. Not bad for a 2.6 litre six cyclinder. Anyway my point is after all that raving is that the motors in my car drive the wipers and electric windows while the engine drives rear wheels. (sometimes spinning them due to another go at the lights.) Engine are for fuel heads. Motors are for cake mixers. Yes you are correct and engine is something assocaited with a fuel driven device, like a car. A motor is an electric device. Dave

Wrong... well partly anyway.... <G> An Engine is a mechanical contrivance, using fuel through internal combustion to generate motive output. A Motor is a machine for supplying motive power, regardless of the fuel it uses. An electric motor uses electricity to produce it's output, where as a motor in a motor vehicle, normally uses a combustible fuel, such as petrol, diesel or gas. It is still classed as a motor. Any contrivance that provides motive motion is classed as a motor, that includes the internall combustion engine. :) Cheers, Ron
> A motor is an electric device. Nah, a motor is 32,000 pounds of rocket propellant in a composite case ;) - Matt

<snip> <snip> I see you follow the "If you're going to distort the truth, then do it in a big way" line of thinking. Just because the motorsport authorities no longer support a class of racing does not mean a particular car is banned or do you also maintain that the GTR was banned in England because they went to a two litre touring car category. Using your statement you could also say that any model of car that ran in those days (including the V8s) were also banned because they didn't meet the requirements of the new categories. We might have a V8 touring car category in Aust today but the rules covering vehicle modifications are different to the Group A rules . I do agree that GTR is an awesome car. But it was also the car that caused the world wide demise of the old group A touring car category because no other manufactures were prepared to spent the sort of money that Nissan put into the GTR. It was a car build specifically for racing in this category, not a modified standard production model that was build by other manufacturers.

In the 24h on the Nuerburgring (http://www.24h-rennen.de/) next week, two GTR models (R33 + R34) made entries. See list of cars (http://www.ks-design.de/24h/1_fahrzeuge.htm). Plus several other cars will do demo laps. -- Matthias Flatt

>So Steppenwolf has to change the "Born To Be Wild" lyrics: >"Get your engine runnin', ..."? Motorhead will probably need to change their name to Enginehead, too. It just doesn't have the same ring to it. Tim

I dunno, i think Enginehead has a certain charismatic appeal.. <G> Good one Tim, i had a good laugh over that one. :) Cheers, Ron

Holy cow man Chill out dude. Don't take life so serious, you won't get out of it alive. I said banned from THE race. Not banned period. I mearly stated that the GTR was banned from the (I think the James Hardie 1000 at the time), because they had a unfair advantage of twin turbo no holds barred power to weight ratio and 4 wheel drive .Besides the race is far better as a fuelhead V8 only race in any case. Oh and I was lucky enough to take a R33 GTR for a 20 min or so drive as it belonged to a friend. Lucky there were not cops around. hehehe . Sadly he sold it and bought a RS500 Cosworth instead. :>( Nigel Nichols -- Redline Race Controls Nigel of Lakewood Motorsports Nascar Coruba & Coke Chevy Hamilton New Zealand

OK...here's a UNIX geek's two cents worth... "Engine" is the correct term to use in relation to computers, even though they are electrical devices. A couple hundred years ago, Charles Babbage designed the "Difference Engine", a hand-cranked computer for performing calulations. It used punched cards for programming and binary math. Earlier in this century, the "Turing Engine" was another theoretical computer. In today's terms, a computer "engine" is a semi-autonomous process, often used in databasing or modelling (ie.- sim physics engines). Bob
Or, to get a little less off-topic, the "3d engine" or "render engines" in 3d-simulations like GPL. -- Matthias Flatt
"Engine"..... Any mechanism or machine designed to convert energy into mechanical work. "Motor"..... 1. A machine which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. 2. A comparatively small and powerful engine, especially an internal-combustion engine in a motor car, motor boat or the like.
