SCGT e-mapping problem with woodoo2

SCGT environment-mapping artefacts and qualifying slowdowns

A Voodoo2 owner reported colored blocks on cars with environment mapping enabled in Sports Car GT and frame-rate drops in qualifying. Suggestions included lowering car textures one notch and installing the 1.551 patch, and others compared Glide versions and overclocking. Ian Parker traced his own force-feedback slowdown to an incompatible VideoLogic sound card, prompting a sound card recommendation debate.

Using e-mapping causes strange colourful "blocks" on the cars, looks really crapy. Im using Glide 2.53 on my woodoo2 12mb card. Other games looks ok, Nfs3, Gpl. Also, during qualifying the framerate drops some, but under practice/race its ok. WHY?? PO.

As was suggested to me in an earlier reply you can use all the options including e-mapping if you turn the car textures down one notch to high. And know what? They do look awesome with this setting. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. cisko [AT] ix [DOT] netcom [DOT] com

It probably happens because the AI cars are qualifying in the background? Anyhow, get the 1.551 patch to help with the problem: [link lost in import: /***.com/] Jason.

I'd posted the following in the "SCGT Patch 1551 Thread" message yesterday: Greg's specs are: and mine are: PII 300 (Dell Dimension XPS D300) 128MB RAM Diamond MX300 soundcard with Diamond drivers "release 1.02" reference drivers rkv2dx6.exe for Glide 2.56 Matrox Millennium II AGP videocard with latest drivers (ver. w9x_433.exe, dated 03/15/99) PDPI L4 digital gamecard w/ lastest drivers (ver. 1.41, dated 10/13/98) TSW wheel/pedals on dual brake/throttle axis Win95 OSR2 with DirectX 6 (dx6eng.exe) I see this qualifying slowdown even if I turn down the three graphics options to "medium" and turn off the other graphic buttons (mip mapping, etc.), and also see it at 800x600 and 1024x768. I turned off the rearview mirror completely, but that didn't seem to make a difference with this framerate slowdown. I wonder if this is a Glide 2.5x problem? Greg, what drivers are you using? TIA. ============================ Dave Mack (remove "nospamfor_" for correspondence)

>Hi Greg, may I ask you a question ? (oops I just did :) ) Certainly! Nope no slowdowns at all. And I never tried qualifying pre patch. But now the performance is cool. You problem could be (I hate to say it) overclocking. Have you tried without overclocking? There have been other programs which experience performance problems if you OC. Huh... So you are saying that without FF it is fine? I had heard that FF could load the CPU but I never see it in any of my games. Maybe it is because of the 450??? Or maybe Randy Cassidy is right and the MS wheel eats allot of CPU cycles which the Logitech wheel doesn't??? I am using USB btw... You might want to try a Logitech wheel from a local Best Buy (you have 30 days to return it) and see if it makes a difference. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. cisko [AT] ix [DOT] netcom [DOT] com

Hi Greg, may I ask you a question ? (oops I just did :) ) I'm running SCGT on a P2 333 o/clocked to 375, 128 MB RAM, 12MB Creative Labs V2, and a MS FF wheel. I believe you use a FF wheel and was wondering if you experienced any slow down before the 1.551 patch? I run medium details at 640 x 480 and suffer severe slowdown with the FF switched on ( In all sessions not just qualifying ). I also run the adv options editor on true simulation which adversely affects framerate too. If I try to run any of the tracks at night with FF on then it's like a Slideshow :( -- Ian Parker ICQ 21772592

Hmm...so, don't know if Glide versions are the root cause, but how about others who have the qualifying framerate slowdown problem, and are using a V2 card? What Glide drivers are you using? ============================ Dave Mack (remove "nospamfor_" for correspondence)

>I also run the adv >options editor on true simulation which adversely affects framerate too. Ian, how much of a slowdown does Adv. Opts. cause? I've been using it for the past few days, but haven't thought that it might be affecting framerate, and don't recall seeing any reference to that before. Ian, I know you posed this to Greg, but I think you have another issue brewing. I'm playing SCGT on a 128 meg K6/2-300, Voodoo2/TnT and the 1.551 patch. I have played it on the Voodoo, but now I run it in D3D on the TnT. The speed is the same, and I like the image quality better. I don't have a MS wheel, I have a Formula Force. Switching FF on/off makes no framerate difference, nor does the advanced options editor. My system is able to run medium details (actually, I have car's on high) with no problem (I run with an 8 car field). My PC is definitely lower performance than yours. I'm not real familiar with the MS wheel, but you didn't mention your soundcard. Is it ISA or PCI? Is it possible you either have a wheel or soundcard driver problem? Tim

The adv. options alone, affects it very slightly, but with FF as well the framerate is very choppy. -- Ian Parker ICQ 21772592 > >I also run the adv > >options editor on true simulation which adversely affects framerate too. > Ian, how much of a slowdown does Adv. I'm running a PCI soundcard, (videologic sonicstorm) I may try my other PCI soundcard and see if that makes a difference. The readme file says that the videologic has a compatibility problem with SCGT. I have been using it with reduced acceleration because of problems with TOCA2 , when I turned it up to full it did cause sound problems with SCGT. Maybe that's my problem ? -- Ian Parker ICQ 21772592
Ian Parker 31 May 1999#471263
Thanks Greg, Unfortunately I have no local Best Buy so that isn't an option. I think I may have found the problem though (soundcard). I have no problem with other games with FF, F1RS, Toca 2, Viper, MTM2 etc. -- Ian Parker ICQ 21772592 wondering

Frankly that doesn't sound like a very good PCI soundcard (too many issues in too many games). I would try getting an Ensoniq AudioPCI (SBPCI64) with the 1370 chipset, which is what I have. They can be found at computer shows or even in the misc.forsale newsgroups for about $35. A very cheap and very good soundcard IMHO. I own 3 of them. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. cisko [AT] ix [DOT] netcom [DOT] com

Greg, Just a question, why the Ensonic when the SB Live Value(oem) can be purchased for under $60.00 these days? -don
Ian Parker 31 May 1999#471266
Well, reinstalling my old card appears to have fixed the problem, and most other games have improved slightly :) New problem, the gas pedal spring gave up mid test :( New solution, Game store replaced wheel and pedals, the amount of play in the original wheel seems to be quite high, the new one is very smooth (wheel and pedals). I was thinking of getting a new s/card , though possibly a Soundblaster Live value, any opinions ? Thanks for your help -- Ian Parker ICQ 21772592
Greg Cisko 31 May 1999#471267
>Just a question, why the Ensonic when the SB Live Value(oem) can be purchased >for under $60.00 these days? 1) I know it works. 2) I know it works in DOS. 3) I know the 3D sound works. 4) I know the 4 speaker support works. 5) I don't know the same is true of the SB Live! Is it good for DOS support too? 6) I know it's gameport os rock solid and gave a 22% performance increase in F-15 over an ISA board. 7) On top of all this $35 is hard to beat. Even if the price for the Ensoniq were around $100 I would still get one. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. cisko [AT] ix [DOT] netcom [DOT] com

So far so good for me... The Live Value cleared up all the sound issues I had in GPL and F1RS and works great with N2, ICR2 and GP2. I don't use the gameport so I can't comment on that. -don

The broken pedals are on a Microsoft FF, but I have also broken a Digital edge F1 sim and 2 TM F1's so it may be me :) (Sorry for the delay in replying my original newsfeed has died :( ) -- Ian Parker ICQ 21772592 > Which wheel is this???
