Microsoft FF wheel discontinued: buy a spare or switch?

Tor Eide asked whether to stock up on the discontinued Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback Wheel or switch to something else. Most replies recommended buying a spare MSFF while retailers cleared stock at about 39 dollars, and some suggested the Logitech MOMO, though its pedals were criticised. Posters shared deals and complaints about rebates and an online retailer's backorders.

I currently own a Microsoft FF wheel. I beleive I've had it since 98'. It still works perfectly, but I got a bit worried when I heard MS has stopped producing it. I've tried a few different wheels from Logitec, but I dont think they stood up against the MS wheel. Should I consider something else, or buy one of the last MS FF wheels in case my old one packs up some time in the future? I play mostly GPL and GTR2002. -- mvh Tor Interested in DVD's recorded at the Nrburgring? [email hidden]

If it's as cheep as I've seen some places, it can't hurt to have one sitting around. But I would try to get a red momo (old one with leather) if I were you. I think it's end of life too but you can get them in some countries. Jone.
I just picked up an extra one for $39.99 at bestbuy, the last one. They changed to red grips instead of grey also... "Jone Tytlandsvik" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bs5a1e$92fb2$[email hidden]...

I just come across the new Logitech FF USB wheel -- mainly for GT4 series, The gear shfiter is now a stick on the right-hand side. The most noticable difference of the new version is the ability to turn 900 degrees. It is costy (~USD200) and I have not got my hands on it yet. I am not sure if there would be a version for PC. Regards.

So far the only thing I can say is better about the Momo is the ball bearing shaft. If he is use to the MSFF he will hate the Momo pedals for sure. I'm thinking about picking up one more MSFF wheel to try adapting the MSFF pedals to the Momo. MadDAWG

Do what I did. Buy another MSFFW on sale for $39, and save the old one for parts if you ever need them :) -Larry "Tor Eide" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:_xnFb.28893$[email hidden]... > I currently own a Microsoft FF wheel. And (this is a true ROTFLOL moment), the "Windows XP WHQL Certified and Approved" SideWinder software included with latest MSFFW's STILL warns that it is designed only for Windows 98 when you run the installer. It must be nice to own the labs and write the rules for the certification... -Larry "John Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:pVqFb.151259$[email hidden]...

Couldnt you just plug both the MSFF and the Momo at the same time and pick which axis you want mapped to whichever wheel pedal combo you want in-game? I realize some games dont use/recognize two sticks but most sims we race do (Papy/EA/LFS). I use the Momo with the AL perf pedals and so far havent had any issue with any game. Remeber though I must still leave my Momo pedals connected so really its the same situation as 2-wheels/pedals. Althought I dont touch the Momo pedals I guess I could still map em as something else like look behind. Im just not skilled enough for that many pedals so close ;) I have seen a tutorial for rewiring my momo wheel to use the AL pedals natively but it's not worth the hassle for me. You'll have to shop around. Best Buy, CompUSA, etc... Most places are sold out so it will take a bit of work but I suspect you could find one. -Larry "Tor Eide" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:uLFFb.28954$[email hidden]...

But as you say it can be fixed with adapting other pedals, or maybe Tor moves on to high end 3 pedal kit in the future. The momo is a far better wheel in my opinion, if you look at the wheel and not the pedals. I connected my old MSFF pedals to the momo right away, so I don't really know how bad they are. :) You are probably aware of the momo and MSFF wiring schematics on my website? http://www.tytlandsvik.no/momo/ -- Jone Tytlandsvik http://tytlandsvik.no
I did a search on pricewatch.com and came up with the below. I ordered it Sunday, it doesn't say anything about being out of stock, however I have not got an email with a tracking number as of yet. I ordered this one as a spare to the one I have now since they have been discontinued. I also have an original Momo as well, but for some strange reason I seem to like the feel of the MS wheel better, I keep going back to it. I don't know anything about this retailer, so I am keeping fingers crossed .. http://bcd2000.com/ItemDesc.asp?Cartid={B6D923A9-68B3-440F-A89E-54F8B96E8F0F}&ic=A1600036&Tp=&cat=Gamegear Don Burnette Larry wrote:

space is my biggest problem. I had looked at some high pedals that would "plug-in" to the Momo but they still needed the originals for power connection. Another problem is my Momo is constantly losing power so the FF comes and goes, and lately its been more like gone. I'm sure it can be fixed, but to be honset I have never been as thriled with the Momo has I thought I should have. I love the ball bearing shaft setup, but something about the wheel I just don't like. MadDAWG

If CompUSA sells it for 79.99 - 40 instant rebate Best Buy won't price match it at 39.99 because the actually price is 79.99. I had the perfect chance to try this out awhile back, but I didn't think of it until it was to late. Best Buy had Unreal 2 for 19.99 regular price. CompUSA had it for 39.99 with an unadvertised 20 instant rebate. I should have tried to get CompUSA to price match the 19.99 then went for the 20.00 instant rebate. Probably wouldn't have worked, but it would have been fun watching them try and weasel out of it. lol MadDAWG

There's also probably some small print that says, "not usable with other offers"... I'll have to keep an eye out for things like that, though. Hey Don, I placed an order for the MSFF wheel from BCD about two weeks ago..The site claimed it was in stock. Four days later, no reply from BCD. (and the only update to my order status was "payment processed") A couple calls later and I found out it was on backorder.. I wasn't real happy with their customer service or lack of info on the backorder.. Maybe they have some now though, good luck to you. I got an almost NIB unit on ebay for $40 shipped..I sure love this wheel.. Beats the crap out of my ancient TM Naspro Good luck, Baart "Don Burnette" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Well, I just checked my order status from their website, and all it says is " not shipped". I presume this means I won't get one from them, I did not receive an email stating this either. Guess I'll send them one asking them to cancel the order, and thank them for the rotten customer support... Don Baart wrote:
