Nascar using GPL Physics.

Newcomer says GPL physics are wrong; regulars push back

G Kuche complained that GPL cars lose grip at 40 mph, arguing no real car behaves that way and citing his 20 years as a taxi driver. Regulars replied that 1967 F1 cars on narrow tyres with no aids really were tricky, that perception without g-forces makes it seem wrong, and that persistence pays off. The exchange included insults, a sock-puppet exposure of 'Griffin' and 'Phoenix' posting from the same host, and a tangent on the Star Wars pod race.

probably because they realized the same thing I did over the weekend....the sim SUCKS!!!!! I've never played a more frustrating sim in my life.....when you cant even go around a corner at 40 mph without the rear end coming loose on you.....then your sim has serious problems........serious!!!

Poor G, You must realize that GPL is far superior to any other pc sim in terms of it's driving physics model. This of course means it is much more difficult than other sims. Me for example, I can run N2 at 105-110 % and come through the pack to win but GPL is still after 8 months a ***. It took me several weeks before I could get around the track with any speed at all and now turn very competitive times. I stopped driving N2, GP2, etc long ago, they are simply not as satisfying in the reward for good driving. You should keep driving GPL for a few weeks then pronounce your decision. I for one am bummed that N3 is so far off in the future. JM

Once again, its not necessarily the physics of the sim, but its the cars that are a *** to drive. Sure, some of its the more detailed physics model that requires a bit more skill, but those cars even in a N2 physics engine would still be a pain to drive. > Poor G, You must realize that GPL is far superior to any other pc sim in terms of > it's driving physics model. I really must agree. Until GPL, Nascar Racing 2 felt to me like the most brilliant of simulators available. Everything about it felt 'right', at the time. Since GPL however, Nascar Racing 2 seems less like a true simulator and more like an arcade game, in that it can not give me the same trills it used to. GPL was released around 7 or 8 months ago [right?], but still wipes the floor with even the newest competition. The GPL engine not being used for N3 is a grave disapointment, but it's perfectly understandable why they can not use it. We could probably find guys who could warp the 3do shapes into Winston Cup cars, but they would still drive like 67 F1 machines. While Papy is very supportive of graphic patches that extend gameplay and sales of it's products...it gets rather testy when folks try to alter the code. Thus, while the Touring Cars in the TPTCC patch, look smaller and sleeker, they are still saddled with a 4 speed gearbox and rear wheel drive. Getting Papy to agree to let someone change the basic #'s in GPL to approximate a WC car would probably be fruitless. dave henrie - On May 17, 1999 A Whale was killed off the coast of Washington State. Why all the fuss because Papyrus are not using GPL for the next Nascar sim. I am sure that we have the ability to make a realistic Nascar simulator by modifying GPL. Papyrus will sell more copies of GPL to Nascar fans who can then download all the patches from the internet, hopefully spurring them on to create some new masterpieces. The tracks are already available, the physics will be more difficult to get right, but the knowledge must be out there.

Clearly, GPL is a game that takes a lot of preparation, practice and perserverance. Then, if you're lucky, after all the hard work, you can get the game to install and run properly. Because so many people worship at the altar of GPL in this newsgroup I thought i'd drag out an old demo and give it another go - without much luck. Were there a lot of problems with the demo? I have a humble P200mmx with voodoobanshee.

I really can not agree with this one bit. It's very possible indeed for cars to behave the way they do in GPL, and unless you have driven a 1967 F1 car, none of us are actually going to know just how true-to-life the cars in GPL are. I do know however, that with the wrong set of tyres, any sports car can have as much grip as a layer of ice! Have you ever seen an F1 cars using slick tires in heavy rain? I have... the driver barely made it out of the pit lane. When I used to race go cars, we were short of money at one point and used grass tyres on concrete one day. I've never driven anything quite so slippery! :-) I wouldn't say that the cars in GPL slip on the roads, because they don't. It's only when you put your foot down that the wheels lose traction, and of you go. Phoenix "Phoenix - A fabulous bird, reborn from the ashes of its earlier life" ICQ# 39578846

Try a little experiment, get in your roadcar, drive to the nearest roundabout and try to go around it at 40 mph, if you manage that find a smaller roundabout, you will lose grip. Alternatively try driving at 40 mph in a straight line and alter your course to the left then immediately to the right. Bear in mind also that a roadcar is designed to be very stable compared to a racecar. BTW dont try it where there are other road users or hard objects to hit, or it will be a very expensive experiment :) -- Ian Parker ICQ 21772592 > guys...guys...guys....all i am saying is this...no car ever made......no > car.....behaves like the ones do in GPL...it's a simple law of > physics.....*** on asphalt at 40 mph does not lose grip .......no > tire I KNOW of does that.....that's what i'm griping about.....and no > matter how soft or how hard or whatever combination of settings I try > and fool around with....the same thing happens.....spinout at 40 > mph...and not even my foot on the throttle....now you guys show me where > in the heck on this god's green earth you can find me a car...ANY > CAR...that behaves like that??? > you wont...end of story.... > > It takes extreme patience to learn to drive a GPL car correctly. > > It took me some months before I felt totally at ease in the***pit. > > However, once I came to grips (no pun intended) with the driving and physics > > model, no other racing sim up to this time gives me the same enjoyment. > > They all feel lifeless. > > -- > > Best regards, > > Bruce. > > ====== > > The Stunned Mullet........seriously satirical stuff! > > http://welcome.to/the_stunned_mullet > > =============================================== > > >probably because they realized the same thing I did over the > > >weekend....the sim SUCKS!!!!! > > >I've never played a more frustrating sim in my life.....when you cant > > >even go around a corner at 40 mph without the rear end coming loose on > > >you.....then your sim has serious problems........serious!!! > > >> Why all the fuss because Papyrus are not using GPL for the next Nascar > > sim. > > >> I am sure that we have the ability to make a realistic Nascar simulator > > by > > >> modifying GPL. > > >> Papyrus will sell more copies of GPL to Nascar fans who can then download > > >> all the patches from the internet, hopefully spurring them on to create > > some > > >> new masterpieces. > > >> The tracks are already available, the physics will be more difficult to > > get > > >> right, but the > > >> knowledge must be out there.

Good point. This example would show that even road cars, which as you pointed out are designed to be very stable, can lose all grip by turning a sharp even once. And concidering that GPL cars didn't even have ABS, Traction Control, etc, I think they did pretty well to even begin moving off the line. GPL is definetly NOT too hard to learn. Proof: I learned to drive it :) Anyone with a proper wheel and a good system WILL be able to enjoy GPL given he/she dedicates enough time learning the handling and is more or less interested in old Formula One cars. 'Nuff said.

I reckon the problem is one of perception: since you don't have the depth cues (no stereo 3D) and can't feel the acceleration of the car, you may not realise just how fast you're asking the car to accelerate/turn, and that's why it seems wrong when it skids out from under you. All I can say is that the more I play, the more realistic GPL feels, especially at a track like the Nurburgring where you're basically whizzing down country lanes, correcting for all the little bumps on the way. You will have to back right off the throttle to start with, but I think that's one of the main attractions of the game - there's more throttle available when you can handle it, so you don't just have the pedal to the metal the whole time.
What corner specifically? If your driving poorly enough or the setup is bad enough, spinning at 40mph is no worries!

I can really see the similarity between a taxi driver in a 3000lb + car in mega traffic conditions and a 67 F1 car piloted by a race driver ....kerrrrrrrrrr PLONK!

Frankly, the pod race looked like NFS3 airborne. Bet they didn't spin out at 40 mph ! How long until Lucas Arts hits the street with Star Wars Pod Racing? Will any of us that have been spoiled by GPL experience want to buy it? Stay tuned.......

Spin out at 40mph ? Uh did you actually see the movie ;) ? They go around 5-600mph. How can they spin also ? What the heck are you talking about ? ;-) There is already a game released btw Terry. Star Wars : Episode 1 Racer. It's an excellent arcade game. Excellent. FYI some tracks are modeled from real-life ones ;) I laughed at the Laguna Seca track map in the Interstellar series. N64 and PC by LucasArts. If you want GPL'esque, don't buy it. But it has a great game engine. Incredible speed. With patience you will learn to, and as Qui-Gon would say.. "Feel, don't think". It goes so fast that it's the only way to be good. One if not the best arcade racer on the market, with Powerslide and DeathKarz (that last one is so under-rated IMHO). -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -- Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -- May the Downforce be with you... For Cinematography, yes. For action, yes. For pure fun, yes. But Le Mans is long. I mean it takes alot of movie time (the actual race), compared to the 12minutes of the Race sequence in the movie. The use of the virtual camera is incredible in TPM. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -- Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -- May the Downforce be with you... Looked like they only spin when they come unglued - yeah, I saw it. GPL notwithstanding, my reflexes are not what they were 40 years ago. Every time I try the "Feel, don't think" process, before long it's "Game over, man, game over!!". I haven't won a GPL race yet, but it is still a tremendous challenge and lot of fun. Tried Powerslide once, but it just did not "click" with me. To each his own, I guess!! --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ---Share what you know. Learn what you don't.---

LOL ;-) Well, I think it's why I like it so much. I think in GPL, I feel in E1 - Racer. Both are probably the opposite of each other, but it doesn't mean Episode 1 - Racer is bad. No not at all ! It's extremely complex and IMHO takes itself very seriously for a arcade-type racer. No weapons, no power-ups, none of that stuff. LucasArts indeed created a serious world for this. When your going at 600mph+ down tight courses, you have this great sense of being on the edge. Really "on the edge". It's a great feeling, probably one of the best thing a game can make you feel (GPL at the opposite does it also). The sound is probably the best I have ever heard in any game, any type. Great music by John Williams, with unused part directly in the movie and not found on the Star Wars original motion picture soundtrack. Different sound for each Pod (22 in total), with great 3d-spatial effects, and voice.. plenty of voice, 200megs of voice ! ;-D The physics are great. Im amazed at the game engine and how they created the whole complex "Pod" as a entity itself, with the whole modeling of both engines (One pod has a single engine, others have 4, etc..) the pod behind it (one of them is up-front), and the metal poles. Both the movie producers and the game programmers worked aside to help each other's here btw. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -- Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -- May the Downforce be with you... Yves, if Microsoft puts out a demo or if a buddy buys it I guess you have talked me into trying it. Overall, sounds like a lot of fun - if my skills are not up to some of it, big deal. In GPL I think we are destined to spend a lot of time mowing the grass, and maybe in E1R the bits and pieces that fly off when the pod impacts the wall/cliff/tree/whatever will look more like real pieces of something than what we see flying about in GPL or TOCA2. Of course, Lucas does not have the vehicle damage licensing woes that abound in NFS3 and SCGT. The manufacturers <grin> don't care how badly bent things might get !! --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ==-- ---Share what you know. Learn what you don't.---
