Eidos Official F1 Racing - Further impressions (quite long)

Mixed opinions on Eidos Official F1 Racing

Chris Wright posted positive impressions of Eidos's Official F1 Racing, saying the full game was better than its demo. Most others were scathing about the demo's handling, physics, outdated graphics and flat tracks such as Interlagos, while a few found it fun with good replays. The thread ended in a petty argument over quotation marks and spelling.

Automated summary.

Following some initial concerns, I'm warming to this game big time. It does have some *** little faults, most especially the fact that you can't change settings in the middle of a qualifying or practice session and that you are limited to three qualifying laps - yuk. Funnily enough, the concerns I had over the cornering animation have subsided - it doesn't look nearly as bad when you are used to it. Baffled? - well you'll have to play the game for a while to see what I mean. The saving grace of OF1R is the tremendous car handling, which is among the best of any sim and absolutely walks all over MGPRS2. Believe me, the more you play this the more convincing it becomes. It's quirky, but it still conveys the feeling you are driving an F1 monster very well. The replay facility is completely brilliant, except that it can only be accessed after a race and not during qualifying etc. Without doubt this has set new standards. Save game could be better as this can only be accessed in championship mode. Some people have commented on the accuracy of tracks. Well we've yet to see the perfect sim in this respect and, on balance, I feel OF1R is as good as any other, although perhaps not significantly better. Topography, in particular, sometimes appears at odds with reality. The trees are not exactly great works of art either. In the eye candy stakes, the helicopter view is one of the more original additions to a racing sim and I think it works really well, particularly in terms of building the atmosphere of the game. I'd trade it for 12 qualifying laps and more flexible set-up options though, but it is a terrific innovation. Like Nascar Revolution, although far better out of the box, this game wants to be a sim when it grows up, but Eidos will have to put some large changes into future patches to achieve this ambition. I would urge anyone to buy OF1R, because its strengths certainly outweigh the obvious weaknesses. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention the awful crashes and lack of visible damage, but I believe significant car damage in games is outlawed by Uncle Bernie, so maybe this is understandable. Well done Eidos, this is an excellent, if slightly flawed, game.
Are you serious? Unless the full game is nothing like the demo, I would say that this is the wost racing game I've ever layed my eyes on. F1'97 is a "star simulator" compared to this. My imression from the demo were like this: - Handling so unrealistic that you can't bear to watch it ... even the movement of the cars is flawed ... which most arcade games get right. The way the car "attempts' to do wheelspin and slides is a total joke .... it just all looks so wrong. - Graphic's have absolutelly no detail ... everything just looks so flat and empty. -The***pit view looks like a "prototype" for something that someone made in 5 minutes. So unfinished. Anyway, I have not seen a game/demo that looks os unfinished and moves so urealistic. Is the full game any different? Regards, David

I pretty much agree. I think this is one of the best modern F1 sims available. I've been playing it non-stop since I got it. Nothing like the demo so far.

Also, if the front suspension is bent far enough, the tire >will eventually leave the rim. All of this changes the way the car drives >and sometimes it is totally uncontrollable, throwing smoke, sparks, etc.. This does sound cool. seemed Why? Does the car suddenly not turn about it's center axis and start turning with it's front tires the longer you play the game? I thought that turning on it's center axis was total BS. It felt to me like a cheesy *** flightsim. I thought you said you drove race cars or something. How can you possibly think this is OK? TSW??? I thought you had an ACT Labs Force RS? Chris, is this one of those games where the demo plays completely differently from the final packaged game? Because I tried the demo, and I thought the physics were just pathetic. The car won't even go into a spin unless you're on the grass. **** Posted from RemarQ - http://www.remarq.com - Discussions Start Here (tm) ****

We didn't drive the same game, unless the demo was a pre-alpha version made for the old Atari 2600 and the PC demo has never been released. This "sim" does not remotely simulating anything done currently in the physical world, let alone driving. It sucks with a gigantic "S". Oh wait, the sound is pretty good. Seriously, have you ever driven a car? I'm honestly not flaming you, maybe you have never driven a car. If you have then you would know that this game doesn't come close to driving any car, let alone a F1 car. It more closely simulates white water rafting. Rafts rotate around their center of gravity, cars turn by the front wheels.
I pretty much agree It has it's faults and initially I was disappointed but then I drove it some and began to really like the feeling of speed and movement. the dynamic driver head movement really work well when you are used to them and i love the way the drivers head wobbles about in the outside views. My one gripe is the car textures are patchy, some like the Jordan are absolutely brilliant but the Ferrari and the Mclaren are terrible. for a quick summary comparing like with like Of1R to MGPRS2 where it counts ie. driving Of1R seems alive and dynamic and MGPRS2 seems flat and dead and I thing we are all spoiled by GPL ! If the demo is any indication this is the worst *** bearing the FOCA license ever - every single Psygnosis attempt included. It's useless no matter how you look at it. Graphics - bad & seriously outdated. Handling - awful. Physics - non existant. F1 accuracy - poor. Btw what about the AI? Are the cc cars still locking up wheels on virtually every corner? Tell us more about. It does not even have correct qualifying procedure? Heh... and what's that with the setups? It's understandable that you want to find the good points in a product you've forket out some bucks for but don't you think this goes a bit too far? You aren't some kind of Eidos marketing troll...? Of course...that's why all other games get at least that part right. PS: I'd give that 'game' 1 out of 5 stars for the good tv-like sound (not necessarily real life like). --Tel

>To me, it is kind of like the driving model in TOCA2. It is no where near >GPL, N1999, or ICR2, but it is better than F1RS or MGPRS, in my opinion. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on that. I don't feel the spins in F1RS are canned. I think many people mistake the spin that happens when you get too far out of shape (you will spin anyway) for canned spins. I can prevent spins in F1RS until I get too far out of shape. Nope I hate i-magic crap. Nope. But why in the world would you get the Cyborg 3D? You are proving my statement :-) -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes. cisko [AT] ix [DOT] netcom [DOT] com

I've played the demo only and I have to say that the game is 'fun' - I certainly have found myself cornering too hard and the car snapping into a spin. The replays are brilliant and it is definitley a game that friends can come and play and after a few laps get into the groove, which is sometimes lacking in driving games. I love GPL and F1RS but this game isn't bad at all, all things considered. Sorry!!
On Sun, 23 May 1999 21:43:19 +0100, "Chris Wright" >Baffled? - well you'll have to play >the game for a while to see what I mean. Isn't the point of a review that the reader _won't_ have to play the game to find out what you mean...? Not at all my findings. Even in "simulation" mode it felt incredibly arcadey - incredibly easy to drive, speeds all wrong versus reality, handling uninvolving and unconvincing. In short, just horrible. I tried it for a couple of days then back to the shop it went. Helicopter view is quite cool, and the track talk through. Straight out of the golf games, but a very neat addition. In no way makes up for everything that's left out, but looks good. Anyone who wants an out-and-out arcader may find some joy here, but I would warn any sim fan away from it - it really falls well short of requirements to claim to be a sim. Cheers! John

Hello rrevved; > John, didn't you feel that it was (much) less 'canned' than driving > F1RS/MGPRS? I don't do you? sims. You do? I like F1RS over OF1 but nothing compare to Gpl! You think there is a comparison from Toca to F1RS?? Sorry but I don't see it! "best modern-day F1 sim available" Are you serious? Guess so but does this still make it a better sim? Sure is but I still do not see any real improvement!? Run 6 speakers w/ Sb Live & do not see any great sound effects!! It is good but not great. I can get the same effect once the 22mz stereo sounds are in the proper directories of Gpl. Once they are in Gpl it's unbeatable and I know many agree. One great thing about Gpl is the ease of "addon-ability!" Yes I know you're going to say Gpl is not a new late 90s sim but a 67 sim. It sure hasit over al the 90s sims & it is a perfect example of; Why is it? Seems the gamer companies are either lazy or just want a fast buck instead of a great 90s sim! imho They need to do more than just the above. imho Cheap doesnt make it better either! again imho Please understand; It isnt really terrible but it certainly isn't "best modern-day F1 sim available" Your words... Enjoy
> The sound is unmatched, IMO, by any F1 game/sim, and the car modeling > is unique, in that there are very different 3D models for each car. > I can't remember many sims that ever attempted that, can you? And what about the tracks?I can talk about Interlagos, which is one of the most hilly courses on the circuit(The Senna's "S" is a realllly steep descent),and this track on the game is ridiculously completely FLAT.Not a 1 cm elevation change. This already shows that the makers didn't even bother to watch a VT of a F1 race on this circuit and how they really care about the sim status they want to give to this game. I would like to hear from others about their home tracks. How do they compare to the ones in the game? PS:another annoying thing is the not mouse enabled menus. What do they still do things like that? You were comparing I believe you said? "best modern-day F1 sim available" Your words... Well is Toca a modern-day F1 sim?? I do believe you might be 'splitting hairs' now?? Also I did acknowledge Gpl was set in 67 not in the late 90s but wasnt Gpl made in the 90s and imho better than any new sim out as of May 24, 1999? Now I just split a hair too. "O" Well this really will not change the world in any significant way. These are all only 'subjective opinions' anyway No more..No less... So; Se` La~ Vi'.. I'm not argueing about the other tracks, just the one which is on my country, and i don't need to cycle through any infinite number of keys to see that they've done the worst on Interlagos Track i've ever seen in a game.Just This.
