Ok, the discussion came up before about running long (or Grand Prix) races.
I'm sure there may be some interest out there. What tracks would be most
enjoyed? I've set up a couple GP length races, and no one joined(or few). Let
me know favorite tracks and/or times to race, EST. For now, I do have access
to machines with T1 connections(THREE!) that I'm willing to set up for long
races. Now that I have PCanywhere working *fairly* well (Thanks, Trips), I can
also set them up from home. And to those who HAVE joined races I've hosted,
thanks for the nice comments.

Interest in full-length Grand Prix races on VROC
EldredP asked which tracks and times would attract drivers to full Grand Prix-length GPL races on VROC, since his attempts drew few entrants. Posters named favourite tracks but noted that disconnections and single mistakes make long online races risky, while others enjoyed weekly Spa GPs regardless. Jack Rambo said GPaL would allow longer races with pit stops, and Remco Moedt noted GPL caps races at 128 laps.

Automated summary.
Ed,
My favorite track is Watkins Glen. However, the track I make the least, out of
the race, mistakes is Kyalomi. Zandvoort is small enough to run a GP and full of
enough turns to keep us busy, so much so that we wont think of the time gone by.
Mexico: Not enough of the average drivers know it enough to stay in that long
Monico: a tinny mistake in the chicain will take out half the field.
Monza: Although easy, is starting to push the length of time needed to run a GP.
Mosport: The hills will take all of the average drivers out in the first few laps.
Nurburgring: Full of e***ment, but very LONG.
Rouen: a mistake in the hairpin will take half the field out.
Silver: Easy and fun track. but when you're alone, it gets boring.
Spa: Fun corners, but when you're alone, the straits will put you to sleep.
Those are just my opinions.
The GP I ran back on April 11th, we ended up with two drivers running for what
seemed like 1/2 the race.
So, My opinion on running a GP race would be to invite only those that have
proven them selves to last a Pro-Long race. If they survive one of those, odds are
they will survive a GP and everyone will have fun at it.

Monaco Short track, low speeds with lots of difficult
corners. Concentration always needs to be at a high here. Expect a lot
of close action racing,.
Monza Perhaps the fastest of all the tracks -
besides Spa. Offers a couple of challenging high speed corners,
especially if you don't have the correct car setup, but can seem a tad
boring at times.
Mexico Not a very enjoyable track, IMO. Some nice
touches, like the tyres sticking out of the ground, but nothing
special for racing.
Mosport I can't remember this one off by heart - I'll
have to get back to you on this one.
Nurburgring The longest track we've seen in any racing
game, ever. So long in fact that I have only done a couple of laps
there at one time, ever, before watching to race on another track.
Very difficult indeed, especially in a race. Don't expect bumper to
bumper racing here!
Rouen One particular long straight which is a recent
favourite of mine.
Spa Excellent track! One of the best, IMO - I only
got into it today. :-) Quite long, with lots of high speed straights
as well as some neat road side object like houses which you can pull
up by - why you'd want to do this is beyond me however.
Sliverstone Not bad, but nothing special.
I'm not sure how many people would want to have a 'long' race at any
of these. I certainly wouldn't - blame a low attention span. :-)
Griffin, the Slayer
HI...any of the tracks on GPL would be suitable for long
races......problem is....half the people that join the short ones now
cant stay on line long enough to finish those ones....so if you run a
full gran prix.........
also....on a full GP...one mistake and your toast......given the way
some people use the gas pedal out of the box at the starts......and the
amount of first lap accidents..running a full length gran prix would be
kind of mute.

% Exactly! This is the reason I hesitate to join GP races.
However, if one "hacks" the 67season.ini file we can run GP length races
with Intermediate damage, thus allowing Shift-R. I know it will defeat
the "realism" in some folks books, but I believe that with warped
enduced incidents, the trade-off is well worth it.
For instance 225 laps for Monza in the 67season.ini will equate the 68
laps of the GP at Intermediate Long setting. Of course GPaL will take
care of this for us...

I love doing GP races, at ALL tracks, I have even attempted this at Monaco,
my engine blew on lap 43 though, but I didn't care, I had enjoyed myself. I
also recently did an ONLINE GP at Spa, I didn't finish, my engine blew...
but I had driven for 8 of the 12 laps i did with broken suspension, I was
racing for fun, can't other people do that? The race was a lot if fun, if
people take it easy at first then what can possibly be the problem? 28 laps
is a LONG LONG race, but if you are there at the end, then basically there's
a good chance you'll win.
I would like to do a GP at rouen personally, I can lap very very well...
if your engine blows, hey that's racing, if someone crashes you out, hey,
it's annoying, but that's racing, if you finish a 28 lap race at Spa having
done the greatest race of your life.. hey THAT'S RACING!
I've done a GP length race at the 'ring before too :)

And if you're REALLY hard-core (as we know you are, Tim), GPaL will allow
you to run *longer* than GP-length races that will require Shift+R pit
stops. Such an event might not appeal to the purist, but could be a load of
fun (not to mention debilitating). And with a reduced damage model, you'd be
assured of having more competitors around at the end!
Jack Rambo
www.RaceLive.com/GPaL
Keep in mind, GPL 1.0 does not support races with more then 128 laps.
Dunno about GPL 1.1 though.

Cool! We can re-create the 1000 km race at Nurburgring that was big in the
sixties. This was part of the same series as Le Mans, the Targa Floria (now that
would be a cool track in a sim!), 12 hours of Sebring, etc. Now if we could
just patch the cars to be Ford GT's, Chaparral 2F's ....
Dave Ewing
Oh man, the Targa Floria! Yum! A tour all around the roads of Sicily with
terrain that makes Nurburgring look like Monza. I doubt if the computer to
do it justice has been built yet but it sure would be fun to try. Just
think, no start line "incidents" ( the Targa was a timed event with single
starts every 30 seconds if I recall right). I still have have fond memories
of Henry M. Manneys Road&Track race reports with various Ferraris,Porche
904's ,a V8 Ford Falcon!,etc
David Erb
128 is the magic number in 1.1 also. So listen up guys! No more than 128
laps at Nurburgring, okay!?!
Actually you can run events longer than 128 laps, but it appears that the
guys in Timing and Scoring are unionized. When the race reaches its 128th
lap, they pack up and go home. So until we get some non-union people
counting laps, 128 is the limit.
Incidentally, the little AI demons *are* cheaters! If you crank up the race
length past the standard GP length, they don't care. They'll run on fumes
for as many laps as it takes! Or maybe their teams just add belly-mounted
fuel tanks (a la your neighborhood F-15) and they jettison those puppies at
1/3 distance. Wonder if they pay a weight penalty for all that extra fuel?
Jack Rambo
www.RaceLive.com/GPaL
Yes they do! With GP damage the race doesn't last many laps... <g>
Remco
Can't agree more. GP Length is RACING and I just can't
wait the moment when I can have chance to do that with
FF.
(Gotta buy the wheel 1st, when financially blessed...)
I like Rouen _very_ much too and can lap reasonably
there with Brabham :)
I once raced GP with Ferrari there, but crashed some
15 laps before checkered flag to rookie error, but
that's what you get when you lose the focus and IMO
that IS important part of the racing -> to keep focus
the WHOLE time :)
My GP length race in Zandvoort was really exciting experience.
My Ferrari was damaged for the last 30 laps of the 90 lap race
and pulling hard to the right. I had to keep my wheel turned 45
to left to make it go straight(still did 1:26's and even 1:25's).
After the race my ***was really in fire. So there's your
Rear Force Feedback! F1 is physical actually! ;)
So..... you did run Nurburgring with +128 laps to test this?
You sure have my respect ;P
I'd love to participate in some GP races. The challenge of grinding it out lap
after lap, maintaining your focus, not dumping it in the weeds, and hopefully maybe
even racing well enough to gain time or positions, all this appeals to me immensly.
I doubt if you'll see it happen often with pick-up races on VROC though. I believe
races like this would have to be scheduled events, so the players can plan the time
in advance. JMHO.

I don't think I've done *10* laps there since I BOUGHT the game...(at least 7

There is usually a Spa GP hosted every weekend, last time 2 cars finished, a
Lotus and a Ferrari, I drove in it myself but lost my engine.
