GPL lap times at Watkins Glen in the Eagle

Drivers compared their Watkins Glen times in GPL, mostly between 1:05 and 1:10 with the default setup and reduced fuel. Neil Raine and David Ewing pointed to Wolfgang Woeger's records of 1:03.61 in the Lotus and 1:04.02 in the Eagle. Advice for breaking through plateaus included consistent practice, switching to other tracks such as the Nurburgring, and trying other cars.

i use a fairly standard setup (just fuel amount and steering ratio changed for my preference) and have done a 1.08.20 lap at the glen in the lotus which is quite similar to the eagle im not a particularly fast driver neither soory to put ou down but i thinbk 1.06-1.17 secs could be managed by some of the top hotlappers like Wolfgang Woeger jay
My best lap in the Eagle at the Glen is about a 1:09.35 Im no ace at GPL yet... so take it for what its worth =) Scott PA-Scott G.T.S. Racing - http://www.GTS-Racing.com

I've done a 1:06.33 with the default setup using the Lotus. I'm sure that it has at least a 1:05 in it. Scottie

I've run mid-1:06s there in the Eagle, but have seen 1:04s from some Eagle drivers. The Lotus is capable of very low 1:04s, though I won't rule out someone hitting the 1:03s. I'm sure it's possible in the Lotus, but I am surprised by the Ferrari part. It's such an unstable car to drive... Griffin, the Slayer
I really must start racing with the Lotus, as thus far my best lap times have been with the Eagle and Honda. Griffin, the Slayer

I have managed a 1:06.40 in the Eagle with the only change to the setup being the fuel load. I run enough fuel for a Pro Long race. Good luck! Jeff H.

My reply wasn't a "Shut up, Scott"! Just giving you something to shoot for.:-) When I was running 1:09's at the Glen, I couldn't have imagined 1:06's were possible for my skill level and the fact that I was running the default setup. I would notice that, when practicing, I would hit a stage where I would "break through". 1:09,..... 1:09,... 1:07,.... 1:07,.... 1:06.... After a bunch of laps, I would find a vital key to improving my lap times and it was remarkably consistent. Keep trying! Aim for consistency first, speed second. The speed will come with being really consistent. J.

I drive the Eagle all the time now, and tend to use the default set-up for hotlapping as its *very* stable (I drop the fuel to 5 laps, but thats about it?) I have done a 1:06.84 using this set-up, and it *wasn't* a realy good lap, there are a couple of errors which show up on the replay. I reckon if I practised hard I might just get into the high 1:05's myself? However, I think the current fastest for the Eagle is probably a low 1:05 (maybe even a low 1:04) laptime? The Fastest lap in *any* car is currently in the 1:03's at the Glen. 8-) Keep practicing..... *Peter* 8-)

Perhaps this is due to the car itself. When driving you're using up more fuel, which in turn makes the car lighter, which increases speed and acceleration. Also, the more you drive the warmer your tyres become, and the warmer they are the more they will stick to the track. :) Griffin, the Slayer

I am sure it is partly to do with fuel but much of the improvement comes with concentrating on being consistent lap after lap. As I get more comfortable, I can push more and more in the corners and the lap times just come down. Keeping the car under you really helps lap times as well because, as you said, tire temps play a very big part. It takes about 3 laps before I can get into the 1:06-07 range. J.

At this point, my braking points are what I would have considered impossibly late a few months ago. You need a comfort level with the track first. Lap after lap after lap... Since racing in the GPLWS, my lap times are much improved. I am more familiar with the Eagle at all of the tracks now and the familiarity translates to lower lap times at all of them because I know how the car will react in certain situations etc. I know it seems difficult and :06's seems a long way off but I went from running 1:09's and thinking I found my limit to running 1:06's in the course of about 15 laps in one evening while practicing for the GPLWS event last season. Just make sure you keep it on the track and keep drivin'! J. PS. I went hunting for replay and I must have deleted them all! :-( I will run around the Glen one night soon and cut another one for you. Sorry.

Ok, I ran about 53 laps yeterday. Previously, my PB was 1:08.54. After 53 laps, I improved to...1:08.46. Big change, huh - .08 sec? I hate to THINK how many laps it will take to get to 1:06's. Obviously more than 15... :) Frustrating isn't the WORD for it. I'd say my average is about 1:09.50 - 1:10.20. I got stuck at the Glen doing 1:07 over and over, so I went round a few other tracks (Zandy etc, mainly at the time for the purpose of NTT) and I found when I returned to the Glen I quickly got into the 1:06's - currently I'm doing the odd mid 1:05 which I'm *very* happy about! Interesting to see what happens now I've blitzed Monaco last weekend for the purposes of a UKGPL race - going from 0 laps to about 100 over the weekend, hopefully I'll find my times reduced again, makes going back to tracks I got bored with a real pleasure (except Monza where I'm stuck trying to get into the 1:28's!) I found the same thing - for me the best track for moving onto once you've reached a plateau is the Nurburgring, as it has so many corners that it really makes you live off your wits while you're learning the circuit. Whereas at other circuits you just learn to brake at certain points and try to repeat the same actions lap after lap, the Ring is so big that you have to actually learn how the car behaves in a whole lot of different circumstances, and try to predict what it will do before it's too late! All of which is very useful when you go back to the shorter circuits. The other thing you could do is to look at replays of other people's hotlaps and download their setups! ;-)
Along the thread of switching tracks, I have found that switching cars also helps when you go back to the marque of your choice. I have been testing the Brabham (vs. my trusy Eagle mount) and when returning back to the Eagle I have found my times decreasing at all the tracks. -- **************************** Michael E.
