Since I live in Australia, like the arse end of the world to some but a

So what will the "Play alone" GPL fan get out of the upgrade apart from

I know it's all a bit hush hush and so trendy to be "In the know" But it's
not like MI5 for christ's sake it's a game so enlightenment would be hugely

What GPL 1.1 offers offline players, and minor bug fixes
An Australian offline racer asked what the GPL 1.1 patch would do for him, and was told mainly force feedback, small bug fixes and many multiplayer features, while others insisted online racing from Australia was workable. Papyrus's Randy Cassidy confirmed several fixes, gave a core.ini setting to disable network polling at startup, and explained that international versions require the CD as an anti-piracy measure. Eric Busch traced other problems to modem polling and buggy 3dfx Glide drivers.

Monster Trucks (two wide into the Masta Kink!), oh yes and finally a wheel

Hi Stuart, i don't know why some Australians are under the impression
that on-line *** with GPL is not feasible..
I can assure you that it is, even in it's present format, GPL on-line
is playable and quite good too, if a bit of time is taken to set up
your connections and dun settings etc..
A good ISP helps as well.
I have been running in a on-line league based in America ever since GPL
was released and after the initial set-up phase was sorted out, i have
had very few problems since..
The biggest killer for Australian GPL on-line players, will be the
hosts that set their allowable ping level at 450 or less, which they
will be able to do in GPL 1.1
If the hosts believe all the hype about having to have a 100 or 200
ping time to have good on-line play, we will be cooked, but if they
take the time to understand the connection issues, then the GPL 1.1
patch will have a lot to offer Australians on-line, especially as more
lenient disconnection code has been implemented into the GPL 1.1
patch..
Don't give up on GPL on-line from Australia Stuart, it is very
playable...
Cheers,
Ron

Apart from making all the pre*** settings available from a single
screen (the Race Central tab), here's a sampling of the things that GPaL
will do, from the interface, for the offline racer:
-Allow for simple adjustment of the AI speed...down for the beginner or up
for the expert!
- Allow for the simple adjustment of AI field speed diversity. Want a wide
range of speeds in the field or prefer a wild tightly-bunched field?
- Increase or decrease the probability that AI drivers will make driving
errors
- Enable or disable the inherent random modifiers that affect AI performance
- Allow you to conduct a spec race in which you and all the AI drive the
same car
- Randomly reassign AI drivers to different teams
- Specify a starting grid that may better suit your needs
- Select a car type (Novice, Advanced Trainer, or Pro) in Single Race mode
from the GPaL Race Central screen
- Specify a race length independent of Level (Novice, Intermediate, or Pro)
- Select the full range of GPL force feedback settings from the screen
All fields in GPaL provide easy point-and-click adjustment as well as
full-keyboard support for keyboard fans. In addition to click adjustments,
numeric field values can be increased or decreased with Up/Dn, +/-,
PgUp/PgDn, etc. Take your pick! :)
Just a taste. And there's more in the pipeline! :)

I will endorse Ron's claims wholeheartedly.
In addition to what he has stated here, I hasten to add that he has managed
to join some of the HMRC crowd on a European server in Belgium on at least a
couple of occasions (admittedly with varying degrees of success). I remember
one occasion where his pings were way in excess of 600 but had a rock steady
connection with no warps. Sometimes connections are just the luck of the
draw.
The point is that online racing from Aus is not only feasible but highly
probable

Well, some are...
Sometimes drivers aid are selected when entering player screen.
With a certain amount of setups, you can't select all of them.
At startup all your netconnections are checked, even if you don't want
to multiplay.
My net connections aren't checked. I don't play on-line and have never
set-up for on-line play, if that's the reason why they aren't.
I wasn't being facetious or sarcastic.....I honestly cannot claim to have
experienced any "bugs" in this product.

The only way to notice is the time it takes to get to the GPL main
menu. In some cases it could take a while...
BTW, you should try online play at least once...it's a blast.

Well, off the top of my head I can think of a couple:
When installing the FULL install, you still require the CD-ROM
when you shouldn't do. There is however already a fix for this, but
it's still a bug which was left in the product.
For some slower PC's, increasing the resolution poses no
problems, except when running a replay in full screen. The controls
are then inactive.
I was speaking to somebody else about this a while ago, so I am sure
that there are a few other things which could do with being changed -
I forget exactly what though.

That's not a GPL bug, that's a 3DFX bug typical of Voodoo and Voodoo2.
Anytime you run a game on your 3DFX card in a higher resolution than your
Windows desktop, your mouse can't reach all parts of the screen. For
example, I run at 800*600 in Windows, thus my mouse can only cover an
800*600 area while playing games at higher resolutions.

Fixed.
You can change this now, if you want. Use Notepad to create a file
named core.ini in the same directory as gpl.exe, and place the
following two lines in it.
[ Communications ]
disable_network = 1
You can also use Notepad to edit app.ini in GPL's home directory to
tell GPL to not look for your serial ports. Change the line that reads
disableDirectConnect = 0
to
disableDirectConnect = 1
GPL 1.1 will also allow you to tell it to not look for modems by
setting disable_modem = 1 in the [Communications] section of core.ini
(this was missing from GPL 1.0).
Randy
That's not a bug, it's a feature. Apparently software piracy is rather
a large problem outside of The States, so the International versions of
the game require you to have the CD in place to run anything but
multiplayer.
See Trips' reply.
Randy
Usually this is caused by an external modem that is not turned on, or
extraneous modems listed in the Win9x modem control panel. GPL polls
the available modem(s) on startup, and in these cases it has to wait for
them to timeout before the main menu appears. GPL 1.1's 'disable_modem
= 1' option will keep this from occurring.

Ahh. Now that does make sense. They didn't do that with the Nascar and
Indycar games.
Most of todays games require the CD plus a hard disk install. I
assumed it was a bug in GPL, as you're asked where you want a full
install which doesn't require the CD or a minimal install. However,
they both require it.
Cheers, mate!
Griffin, the Slayer
In those with a mouse driven interface that scales with game resolution
(like GPL's full-screen replay) it should be readily apparent. Like
many games, the rest of the GPL interface is a static 640x480 so this
isn't an issue. Do any of the other games you're tried actually have a
visible mouse cursor on the high-res screens?
Eric
Well Stu, there must be 2 Australias because I've been into the
multiplay since the sim was released. Not perfect, but plenty good
enough to totally negate any interest I had in offline racing.

And even if the CD was needed to sit in the drive, that to me is not a
"bug".
This term ("bug") is used very loosely amongst the *** fraternity. I
think that a lot of people do not really understand what is legitimately
classified as a "bug".

That's fine, however, 92% of any of the racing done on-line via VROC/GPL
is not "scheduled". Just about all you have to do is show up and wait
a few moments and you will have the opportunity to race.

I disagree. I'd say that a _bug_ is something which wasn't intended to
happen when the game was made, but does, and causes problems to people
playing it. Or, a bug could be when something works, but not well
enough and improvements could be made.
I'm not entirely sure if there is an _exact_ technical disription.
