Well, with the screen shot of GPaL looking like the***pit of a 737, I see
nothing about how this is going to interface with Spyboy or VROC. I mean, I
would give up neither of these applications to run GPal. Looks to me like
you can do eveything thing you need to do now, without this. I mean, load
spyboy, chat with everyone and run a quick race or 2 like pretty quick. How
long does it take to change from F! to F3 and load your setup? 2 seconds?
The 1.1 patch will have all these GPal parameters included, and lets face
it, how often are you going to be utilizing all this? Is irc chat included ?
Is this GPal essential? VROC and Spyboy are.
Just questions...ok?
C
Skeptics question Jack Rambo's GPaL utility, regulars defend him
A poster questioned what Jack Rambo's GPaL front end would offer over Spy Boy and VROC, and Michael Barlow suggested its promotion made Rambo sound god-like. Rambo replied that GPaL was a free settings and race-setup tool that would complement rather than replace VROC, and disputed Ron Ayton's claim that VROC 1.2 and Spy Boy already had all its features. Most regulars defended Rambo's volunteer work, Barlow apologised, and the thread was eventually allowed to die.
Automated summary.
I wanted to ask the same questions But didn't because of the way GPal has
been advertised. Seems like he is giving away everything that's already in GPL
and just slapping his name on it. He did forget some important things though..
Chat! Chat! and Chat!.
But, then again, If he can make this GPal work and make him look like a GOD
at the same time.. I say, go for it.

With regard to use of VROC/Spy Boy, GPaL will certainly not prevent you from
enjoying either. In fact, if you're hosting a VROC race, GPaL will make that
process a lot easier and much more flexible.
*Many* of the options that GPaL provides will not be in the GPL 1.1
interface. Several of the great new GPL 1.1 features, in the absence of
GPaL, will be accessible only through initialization file or command line
modifications. GPaL tries to bridge the gap by providing a friendly, fast,
familiar Windows interface to all this great functionality and adds some new
twists of its own. And you've only seen the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
But, of course, everybody is certainly entitled to an opinion. Personally, I
find it a little strange that you choose to complain about a product that:
1) represents a considerable amount of work, 2) is being offered for free,
and 3) you won't be compelled to use.
In the interest of equal time for GPaL, I'll close by sharing a piece from a
very nice unsolicited e-mail that I received from Tom Pabst just today. If
you are unfamiliar with Tom, he's a two-time SCCA National Champion, former
BMW factory team driver, a SCCA competition license instructor, sim racing
instructor, sim racing league organizer, and self-confessed GPL ***.
Here's what Tom had to say...
"let me say this about GPaL. Including all of my experience and years in
real racing....with my sim racing of the past two years....I've not
previously run into a 'racing accessory' that is as 'innovative, completely
useful and utterly needed' as your GPaL creation."
Thanks, Tom! Exceptionally kind.
Believe me, I'm uncomfortable sharing this kind of feedback, but I guess I
feel a little compelled to offset the potential damage done by a few
reckless comments made by individuals who haven't really gained a sufficient
understanding of a product but nonetheless choose to publicly lambaste it.
Makes me understand why companies like Papyrus are reluctant to talk about
product details prior to release. My goal was, and is, to make the GPL
community part of the design process.

No, No Adam, it's not useless......because it's not. The question I asked,
and received no answer to, was "is it essential" Adam, it is essential if
you are setting up your own servers and need an interface..........ok.
Question #2 was....."how this is going to interface with Spyboy or VROC. "
answer:
"With regard to use of VROC/Spy Boy, GPaL will certainly not prevent you

Now, do you think this answered that question?
Question #3: Is irc chat included ?
Answer:
......................................................................
I was not complaining as Mr. Rambo implied. I only said i didnt need a space
shuttle cabin approach to switch to f3 and a setup, and since i don't host
most is usless to ME.
Now the other 90% of Mr. Rambo's reply really had nothing to do with
answering the questions in my post, only served to draw attention away from
them. Im not sure im as enthusiastic about it the way Mr. Pabst is, but it
does look great.
Mr. Rambo encourages responses to his new toy and he encourages questions. I
only asked three.
Mr. Aytons reply was classic and very well thought out and did not deviate

Mike...
I have to say I'm stunned and disappointed. This "I'm God" thing is
unbelievable. I, personally, have no idea of what you're talking about and
invite you to reply by posting quotes from "adverti***ts" wherein I
suggest, seek, or imply any god-like status.
I apologize if I have offended you or anyone else. I have simply tried to
promote a product, GPaL, for which I have a great deal of enthusiasm. If I
convey my genuine passion for GPaL's features, I see that as marketing,
not personal chest-beating.
You see, I'm just one guy who has spent a lot of time in front of the screen
writing code for an application (GPL) that I think hung the moon. I don't
have a big, nameless marketing department in the adjacent wing to promote my
product in anonymity. So when you see an "adverti***t" (generally in the
form of an RAS post or a news item on a sim racing news site) announcing
something I'm doing, you normally see my name at the bottom.
To give you an even better feel for my sensitivity on this issue, I'll also
share a couple more things with you. First, I generally attempt to avoid the
use of "I" as much as possible in ever piece I write (e.g. "GPaL will do
xyz" wins out every time over "I've given you the ability to do xyz").
Secondly, though I feel bad in that I sometimes have not acknowledged the
many kind words that people have bestowed upon me, GPaL, or the NTT series,
I have frequently chosen not to respond to many of their posts specifically
to minimize the amount of attention that is focused on me personally. (To
all those kind souls: Please don't think for a minute that your generous
words aren't appreciated! Thank you for each and every one!) So it seems, as
the expression goes, "Sometimes you just can't win for losing."
The really sad thing here is that there are probably many talented people
out there that see these kinds of attacks and simply decide not to
contribute because they know they don't have the constitution for it. It's a
needless loss and as long as it continues the sim racing community will be
the poorer for it.
Hope this clears up any misperceptions.

Hi Jack, i am not so sure they were actually complaining about
recieving GPal for free, or that the effort and time you have invested
in GPal was not appreciated, but they did voice their concerns about
how GPal would interact with SpyBoy and VROC, which i feel was a fair
question.
The ammount of work that has been invested into VROC 1.2 and the new
version of SpyBoy, was perhaps a measure of concern to some people as
well, considering that VROC 1.2 and the new SpyBoy also have all the
added features of your GPal program and are just waiting for the
release of GPL 1.1 to be able to take advantage of all the new
additions.
A few good people have invested a lot of time and effort into VROC and
SpyBoy, and obvious concerns about compatability issues are only
obvious.
Thank's Jack for letting us know that GPal will in no way upset the
workings of VROC and SpyBoy and for sharing that information with the
readers on RAS.
I wish you all the best with your GPal launch.
Also, in response to the post by rrevved, everyone is intitled to
his/her opinion... Some people just have a immature way of showing
it. Your response to a legitimate question/concern about GPal
rrevved, shows it up well...
Regards,
Ron
Hi rrevved, the immaturity level was asigned to you simply because of
your need to flame a couple of legitimate ***ies regarding the use of
GPal when interacted with VROC/SpyBoy, with an objective description of
the parentage of the guys in question...
If you don't race on-line through VROC, then by all means GPal should
suit your needs perfectly.
Cheers,
Ron
Hi Jack, i am sorry, but at this stage i can't clarify, as i am not
going to get into a who knows what debate on a public forum, suffice to
say that i am also under a non-dislosure agreement and some things
should not be discussed on a public forum untill all partys involved
have agreed to releasing the information on a general level, however
you are right in regards to your comments that i do not know all that
is in the release version GPal.
I am simply going on what i know will be possible to implement through
the GPL 1.1 patch when it becomes available.
I did feel though that the ***ies regarding SpyBoy/VROC and the
compatability issues with GPal was a fair question.
It wasn't just the few posts here that made me decide to ***into this
thread, but i have also been asked numerous times on GPL Chat about the
ramifications of GPal interacting with SpyBoy, and as i didn't know the
answer to that question, i thought a response from you regarding
compatability issues would ease a few minds.
I can't answer questions i don't know the answer to, hence the reason i
replied to this post to start with.
Cheers,
Ron

No more messing with INI files is singularly worth the download.
It's my understanding that GPaL isn't designed to replace VROC or GSB, it's
an interface for quickly and easily adjusting the game settings for whatever
you require, eg. graphics settings can be altered from a dropdown list to
suit either training, online or offline racing, Core.ini files can be
selected to suit different hosting purposes.
IMHO GPaL will be a bonus to the already great GPL and can only help people
to get more from the sim.
It may not be essential but will be a great advantage.
Keep up the good work Jack !!!!

Jack, I'm sure I speak for many when I say your work on a project like
GPaL is very much appreciated by the sim racing community.
And just from the single screen shot I've seen, it looks incredibly
useful. As a user interface designer myself I know how much thought
and expertise goes into making an efficient, clean user interface.
There are many mamy ways to do it wrong, and a few ways to do it
right. GPal looks very, very well done. I hope you're proud of it, you
should be.
Joe
I think you're avoiding the point, Ron. The only problem that I had with
your post was your unqualified statement that "VROC 1.2 and the new SpyBoy
also have all the added features of your GPal [sic GPaL] program."
Some of GPaL's "added features" are tied to GPL 1.1 and some are not. Since
only a fraction of GPaL's feature set has been unveiled at this point, you
can't possibly suggest that the programs you mentioned include all of GPaL's
features. Simple. Your statement is entirely inaccurate and misleading to
RAS readers.
By making the details of the GPaL interface available as it's under
development, the GPL community has the opportunity to evaluate the design
themselves and to provide input. I'm disappointed when that process is
short-circuited by unsubstantiated statements.

You think i am avoiding the point Jack ??
This is what i stated:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ammount of work that has been invested into VROC 1.2 and the
newversion of SpyBoy, was perhaps a measure of concern to some people
as well, considering that VROC 1.2 and the new SpyBoy also have all the
added features of your GPal program and are just waiting for the

------------------------------------------------------------------------
No where in that section did i state that new versions of VROC & SpyBoy
had ALL of the features, YET to be added OR revealed in your GPal
program..
I started that they have all the added features of GPal, and they do
have.. How can i know what you are going to add to GPal in the furure
?
What i do know is what you have made available for viewing, apart from
the adjustable Ai strength is also available in the new Versions of
VROC and SpyBoy..
Maybe i should have made myself clearer on that point, rather than let
you drag it all out of proportion.
I know you understood my post Jack, and why you have to try to turn
this post into a public relations promotional feature for Gpal is
anyone's guess.
I wasn't putting down you, or your program, but as i stated, i simply
entered this discussion about the compatability issues with the
programs in question.
I have never made any unsubstantiated statements, as you so elequently
put it, but simply wanted to know, like a lot of others, what your
ultimate intentions regarding compatability issues were and how GPal
was going to interact with VROC and SpyBoy.
I am not giving you any more publicity on RAS, if you want to take this
further, feel free to email me with your complaints or ***ies.

After reading the posts in this thread, I just HAD to yell: "WHAT THE HELL
IS GOING ON HERE?!!??!". I am a software developer and GPL *** and
know what it must have taken time-wise for Jack to take on such a project.
Mr. Rambo is offering it FOR FREE to anyone who wants it and it trying to
(a) take a part in fostering the GPL community (a good thing) and (b) make
GPL easier to use (also a good thing).
Why, oh why, does anyone on this newsgroup feel it is somehow necessary to
give him sh*t for it? I have seen many newsgroups chase helpful people away
(like the developers of the games themselves (can you say c.s.i.p.g.f-s?)
because a vocal minority feels the need to bash instead of offer helpful
advice and comments. If you don't feel that what Jack has created will be
of use to you, don't download it. Thoughtless comments serve no purpose. I
feel grateful that Jack has decided that there was value in the opinions of
this newsgroup that might help in the development of his tool. He must have
been surprised when, instead of getting helpful comments, he got a raft of
sh*t. Geez. Some people...
Jack, if some of the nitwits on this group don't want the fruit of your many
hours of labor, send it to me. It looks like an immensely helpful utility.
Please don't leave the group and, as someone else said here, "don't let the
bastards get you down".

Girl girls girls girls girl...!!! Let's take this outside, handbags at 10 paces maybe??
On a serious note, and I really should not get involved, but as an impartial outsider, there does seem to be some questions that still need addressing.
The question regarding how GPaL interacts with GSB & VROC still seems to remain unanswered. Dose GPal pop up automatically when we select a race from either GSB or VROC? or will we need to click on an Icon? Once we have made our GPaL selections, will GPL be launched automatically?, or will there be another key press involved? Am I even in the right ballpark with these questions?, until Jack give us a little more detail, no one knows.....!
As for what functions are in GSB 1.1/VROC 1.2 verses what will be in GPaL, and what if any "doubling-up" of features will exist, we will all just have to wait and see, (May 31st for GPaL and who-knows-when for GSB/VROC and GPL 1.1).
And Ron, if you are privy to some insider information regarding the content of GSB/VROC, then I respectfully suggest that you honour your non-disclosure agreement, and keep quiet, as your dropping of hints as to what will be included is only confusing things further.
As for the "Public Relations" exercise for GPaL, I'm sure that Jack is only tryin to see what interest exists in what will essentially be "freeware". Where I believe things have gone a little out of control is in the fact that if you ask 100 people what they want, they will always want 100 different things..!! Maybe less hype would equal less unwarranted criticism, (sorry Jack...!!)
I for one cannot wait for GPal, or GPL 1.1 / GSB 1.1, and I am in awe of those people that make these thing possible, especially considering it's all for free...... so I suggest that we all just sit back and wait for the release of these products, before making any judgements or jumping to any wrong conclusions......

I was trying to say... The way he has been wording
the adds for Gpal, It seems as though he is trying to get a "I'm God" idea across.
Maybe I've been reading the adds the wrong way. It just seemed to be trying to
get that idea across. I meant no flame by my post. I do wish him well with the
add-on.

I don't know Jack personally and I don't think I have ever raced with
him, but by looking at his site and the FREE product he is developing,
he is spending a TON of his own free time developing a utility that is
going to be extremely useful for a vast majority of the GPL users.
From what i see, Jack does not need publicity or a slap on the
back... all he is doing is spending his own time and efforts in
building a product for anyone who WANTS to use it.
Even if you for some reason think its worthless, you should still be
thankful that people like Jack give all of us options for utilities to
make our racing more enjoyable and convenient.
THANKS Jack.

Why in the world does a utility need chat? SpyBoy needs chat and so does
VROC, but since GPaL isn't either one of them and just a utility to allow
you to setup GPL the way you want it and easily (supposedly/hopefully) it
does not need a chat feature. Good grief. Want it to take out your garbage
for you too?
The way the adds were worded, GPal sounded like it was going to be a
competitor to TEN, GSB, and any other future GSB type of application. (chat,
Race list, ect..) If you read some of the other questions asked about GPal,
you would see that I'm not alone with this assumption. Since I wrote that
post, it has been described in more detail what GPal is going to be.
The GPal application does sound interesting. Having a chat feature along
with it would greatly enhance the application. The addition of being able to
take out the trash for me would also be a big improvement too ;-)

And thanks in advance for taking the time to code all this stuff for people
like me who will enjoy GPL even more because of it.
And , you don't need to reply to my e-mail. =;-D

Ok, let me get this straight........ you didn't say "that new versions
of VROC & SpyBoy had ALL of the features," you said "that VROC 1.2
and the new SpyBoy also have all the added features". Umm, ok now I
get it "ALL" means something different than "all".

Sorry about that guys, but I wrote that comment and posted it to my
server way back when the thread first started. Thought it just got
lost as I never saw it on the n.g. Now it shows up and I am suprised
that anyone even new what the heck I was talking about.

Sorry i jumped on you about restarting this thread, some things i guess
we are just better off letting die a slow and natural death and this
thread was one of them.. :)
Computers are one thing we can never rely on to do the right thing by
us. They tend to surprise us all the time. :)
Cheers, and apologies as well.
