Coulthard uses PSX

17 posts by 13 people · 15 May 1999 - 18 May 1999

I thought this might be of interest. Too bad he didn't practice with GPL. He might have grabbed pole instead of P3 ;) Coulthard turns to simulation - 13-May-1999 David Coulthard has turned to his computer play station in a bid to fulfilll his dream of winning Monaco. The Scot, who was sixth at the end of the first day's untimed practice, believes hours on the simulated game will help him prepare for the toughest race of the year as attempts to build on his second place in Imola. 'I wouldn't normally be a believer in switching on the play station but this is one place where the flow and the graphics are very accurate for the way the circuit goes,' he said. 'You get so little chance to hammer it straight away that it gives you a good chance to have as much a vision as where you are going to brake, where you are going to apex and what the line is through a lot of corners. He is not the first driver to use computer simulations. Jacques Villeneuve admitted he used his computer game when he put his Williams on pole at the Belgian Grand Prix three years ago. The Scot, who lives in Fontvieille, the new part of Monaco near the track, is looking to build on his second place in Imola two weeks ago after failing to score in the first two races in Australia and Brazil. 'I am 10 point behind the leaders and that's not much - it was more than that last year,' he said. 'To win here would be brilliant. It has always been classed as a driver's circuit. Nice thing to have on your CV. I feel prepared and confident.'
It's amazing that someone like Coulthard can speak so highly of a Play Station racing game, yet so many here condemn sims as if THEY are the one's who really know what it's like to race at Monaco. David G Fisher
What sim are we talking about? because lets face it, all playsatation racing games are not "sims"at all,and I have not seen any quote from David on his official site? > It's amazing that someone like Coulthard can speak so highly of a Play > Station racing game, yet so many here condemn sims as if THEY are the one's

Anyone know where the quote can be found? As to the point, note that nothing is said about the realism of the driving, just that he uses it for track familiarity. Anyway, don't take this to mean that I know how to race at Monaco. Though my Integra would come in the top 10 (ie, it would finish :-)).
I had heard last year, that it was Formula 1 '97, which was the best "sim" on the PSX at the time. -- Remove "spam jammer" to reply Graffiti seen above a urinal in East Grand Forks, MN: "Please don't eat the big white mints!" My Yahoo! pager ID is Galley_SimRacer
Hmmm....I think I now know why DC made the reference to the PSX. I find it difficult to believe this is just a coincidence. Unbelieveable! I guess DC has been demoted to the role of sponsor mouthpiece after being outclassed by Mika for the second consecutive season. I guess he'll be taking up smoking West cigarettes next! from www.dailyf1.com (5/15): New official partner for McLaren Eidos Interactive - leading world-wide developer and publisher of interactive entertainment products, is delighted to announce that from the Monaco Grand Prix, it will be an 'Official Partner' to the West McLaren Mercedes Formula One team, current World Champion and one of the most successful teams in the history of the sport. As an 'Official Partner' of West McLaren Mercedes, Eidos Interactive will appear on the sleeves of the overalls of the drivers, Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. Whilst neither driver is quite in the image of Lara Croft, ***e of Eidos' most popular game 'Tomb Raider', they are equally capable of success as Mika Hakkinen has established with his Drivers' World Championship. Eidos' products are pre***ly designed for the PlayStation and personal computer hardware systems. The product strategy is to produce quality titles with an emphasis on gameplay and innovation and as such has one of the strongest product portfolios in the business. With offices in London, Paris, Hamburg, Tokyo, San Francisco and Singapore, they are indeed global players which is reflected in their choice of a Partnership with a truly global sport. Charles Cornwall, CEO of Eidos plc: "This stimulating new partnership with the West McLaren Mercedes team develops our commitment to sports sponsorship and we are looking forward to being able to use our involvement with the team in marketing and PR initiatives". McLaren International operates at the cutting edge of technology within the world of motorsport. With a reputation for technical excellence and integrity McLaren has, throughout 30 years of racing, proved to be one of the most successful teams of all time. Since 1974 McLaren has won 10 World Drivers' Championships and eight Constructors' Championships, in the process achieving a 117 Grand Prix victories. "We're very e***d about our Eidos Interactive Partnership," said TAG McLaren Group Managing Director, Ron Dennis. "McLaren aims for supremacy in terms of quality, attention to detail and leading edge technology. Clearly Eidos have similar goals and we feel the two teams complement each other very well". 7:00 PM CET : Franck Drui
Just as amazing as it is that some think Sony never paid him a dime for those comments.

I wonder if anyone would believe me if I told them that I replied to the Fisher b4 I read this? :)

Coult***ly mentions the Play Station in his comments. Nothing about Eidos or even the game he was using. You said in your response to me that Sony must of paid him, not Eidos. I think I remember you accusing me of being paid by a certain large software company for my comments here at r.a.s. Is this something you do often? David G Fisher

I believe you. I had the same suspicion DC's remarks were more commercial than literal. I suspect is was also obvious to anyone without an anti-GPL bias. Marty
