Hi Guys...
There's a post/string below ("What would be better") that has a discussion
about driving views. In that string I made reference a couple of times to
the altered cockpit cam I use for NR003 (and other Papy sims prior to it).
Several people have asked to see this altered cockpit view, and/or have me
email it to them.
This has come up before on r.a.s., many of you are already driving with this
altered cockpit (at least I know Don Wilshe is....he says he got much faster
with it, but he was so slow to start with...LOL).
I thought rather than answer a ton of email (and the file is a tad on the
large side for sending via email), I would post a link here to download it.
Here is a jpeg of the altered cockpit cam I use, taken from my WC car at
Infineon. You can take a look and decide if you want to download the files
necessary to create this in your NR003 sim:
www.pabst-racing.com/webscreens/nr03_alt_cockpit_cam.jpg
If you want to download the files, click the link below and save the zip
file to your hard drive. There is a readme file contained in the zip with
all the information you need to install it:
www.pabst-racing.com/webscreens/nr03_alt_cockpit_cam.zip
Remember, I only use this when racing in my WC cockpit sim, otherwise I use
the standard Papyrus cockpit.
Take care,
Tom
I don't play NR2003 for various reasons, and I think the arguement about the
cockpit vs "kite flyers" thing is moronic, considering it's a video game.
BUT.. I LOVE that .jpg of your modified cockpit view! It seems to really
make sense to me, since you already have an actual wheel infront of you, so
there's no use wasting half the screen on a virtual wheel. Although, I do
kinda forsee an arguement for the virtual wheel being there, since the turn
ratio of your actual wheel is different and this visualizes it. But, I can't
see that being an actual problem... more of a "voodoo" kinda problem.
I'm going to load up LFS and mess around with the view to approximate
yours.. although the LFS cockpit view is already, in my opinion, 10 times
better than NR2003.

You are dead right on.....about the turn ratio on the wheel in my cockpit.
I had to adjust my controls quite a bit when I went to this driving view in
my WC cockpit sim rig. But, after a little experimentation, I got the
"feel" to be right on.
However, if I am sim racing at my computer desk (where I do the track
graphics work and stuff)....and I want a realistic/fun experience. Then I
use a screen shroud and I race with the NR003 standard cockpit....and just
let my brain get sucked into the screen to believe its in the car. I keep
the wheel in the screen....but remove the driver's hands/arms.....those have
always been too distracting to me, but that could just be something
personal.
While our sim racing might be technically described as "playing a video
game" the point of the discussions about driving position have always
been......is it realistic or not. Playing a "video game" isn't the
question....we admit to using a computer video game.....to do something that
fools us into thinking we are racing....and that is no different than really
racing (its the same drug.....just a different delivery system)!
Everybody has a different opinion about what seems realistic to them. If
you've been racing in a real race car, then what is realistic to you will be
different than someone who hasn't. Its not about being "better"....its
about being realistic. I am going to have a much tougher time "fooling"
Jeff Gordon's brain in one of our simulators....than somebody who has never
been in a real race car. Hope you see the point?
Have fun with your LFS cockpit view....post a pic if you come up with
something cool!
Regards,
Tom

I'm starting to look into this sort of thing for a team I do some work for.
I'd already wondered about how I'd run from the game cockpit when inside a
stock-car shell - that 2x car interior thing - one "virtual", one real.
You've jogged my memory and now I remember that you sorted this issue out
some time ago. You've made this link public but I'm still gonna be polite
and ask if it would be OK to use this if the "corporate entertainment" sim
shell comes to fruition?
Cheers,
Mark
Mark,
It would be best for you to download the file and keep it, I will not be
leaving these files on my website for more than a few days. I have sent an
email to Jan Kohl at the US Pits, they may put it up on their website
permanently, however. Then you'd have access to it as needed.
Hope that works for you?
Regards,
Tom
Mauro,
I made this cam with one of the GPL cam editors. There are several on the
net and they all work. Essentially, the "make_a.com" file for NR003 is a
GPL cam file format. So, you can not only edit this cam (the roof cam) but
all of the alternate driving view cams in NR003. The only FOV you CAN NOT
edit, is the Papy in-cockpit cam.
I have used this cam editor to make several "special" cam views that I use
when doing track graphics work. My favorite is a nose cam that is right at
the tip of the car's nose, yet up at driver's head height. I use that when
going out onto the track to look at some texture file I've just
edited.....works perfect for that sort of thing. You can "race" from any
FOV or view you want.....its up to you to decide what you enjoy and what you
don't enjoy. But, if realism is you goal, stick to the in-cockpit cam or
use one that gives a driver's FOV that matches real life.

Just got it - thanks for your work :)
If you want I could put it up on the V8 Thunder site for posterity?
Mark
Tom,
Hello again, You may recall our e-mail exchange around the end of the summer
about the "Opening Summer 2003" on the website, lol.
My question and excuse me if I missed the answer if this was already
covered, is can the new view be used for Online racing?
I would love to try it, is it easy to remove if I need to do so?
Thanks again for your contributions to the sim community, and for your
answers here also.
Best regards and Happy New Year,
Steven Dager

Yes, I remember our email.
And, "yes" the alternate cockpit view can be used online. It's just a "roof
cam".......so everyone with think you are "roof riding!" LOL....
Regards,
Tom
Now dont ruin it for me, I am trying not to recall that this is still a
"roof cam".
I really like it Tom, other than not having a review mirror to use. I know
there is one but its right in the middle of the screen so I chose not to
turn it on. How do you utilize the tach and guages in your simulator? Or
do you turn the view on/off as needed?
To me this is more realistic than the stock in-car view, I do not like
seeing the steering shaft and other stuff the game supplied in-car shows. I
would love to move the Review Mirror to the upper right corner, then all
would be perfect to me.
Again thanks for the work, I am going to try this some and see how well I
can do with it. Maybe I can be as fast as Don someday, lol.
Regards,
Steven
