Why hasn't anybody produced a real gocart sim with real physics and none
of the arcade type garbage that ealier gocart games suffered from?
Such a game would lend itself well to the type of career mode that Viper
has. You could start in the lower classes and work you way up to
Supercarts.
The racing would be as close as in TOCA 2 without the need to decrease
the physics realism.
The feedback though a FF Wheel would be brilliant and the sense of speed
should be equally as good.
(Yeah...I finally got to post an on topic message!)
Calls for a realistic go-kart sim
A poster asked why nobody had made a realistic kart sim with a career mode up to superkarts. Karters described how popular and close the real racing is, others questioned simulating something people can easily do for real, and Microprose's Virtual Karts was mentioned as an earlier, weaker attempt.
Automated summary.
Just down the road a bit is a 1/2 mile paved road coarse built
specifically for 3.5 hp carts. They are very fun to watch. Unfortunately,
even though the track is all set up for spectators, the only spectators
there are are family members of the drivers. There's even a very big sign
setup in front of the field on a busy highway. still, no one comes by to
watch.
My opinion on this is that go-carts are not a big thing. Again, my
opinion, NASCAR has defined what racing is... BIG, LOUD cars. anything else
is nothing more then kids playing with there matchbox cars. It's a shame
too, These carts put on an awesome show. Not only from the competition
standpoint, but also in the crash and burn standpoint. no one has got hurt
in the accidents I've seen but the crashes were spectacular enough that you
swear the drivers are all dead.
Just my opinion, but, go carts are just not well known enough to be
anything more then a Mario Brothers type of Sim

What? Thousands of people race go-carts in the US alone. I think the problem
with a go-cart based sim is that there is no high-end exposure. Anyone who
is anyone in formula cars and sports cars started out racing carts. I think
it would be a great idea for a sim. The physiscs model should even be pretty
simple, realtively speaking. There's very little to adjust on a cart.

That's what I said! No real exposure, no advertising, No one in the stands
other then the family members of the drivers.

I've still got Microprose's "Virtual Karts" somewhere.... It wasn't a
GPL-level sim (is anything?) but it was an attempt at a "realistic" kart
sim. (i.e not Mario Kart)
It has about 12 different tracks and you could race 3 different types of
kart, and create your own driver to progress through the classes. It
also has pretty funky graphics.
However it's kinda let down by poor menus, a lack of controller options
and karts that behave seriously strangely once they touch the kerb.
In fact I haven't played it for a while... I might reinstall it and have
a go :-)

Hello,
I think a karting sim would be GREAT! I race karts on the WKA National Dirt
Circuit and the National Dirt Events have 700-1000 karts for a two day event.
Karting is huge and the compitition is so tight. A whole field of 30 karts can
be sepeated by just a couple tenths. Since your sitting so low the sense of
speed almost doubles when your flying around the track. This game could be a
big hit becuase so many people can relate to karting unlike driving a NASCAR or
CART car.
Thanks,
Aaron Markham *Kart44*

The
menu really sux, the setup options are weak, the gameplay is weak, the physics
are weak, and only 2 other opponents really makes for some bad racing.
But on the other hand it actually works on my cpu, so that's a plus.
In the same way not a lot of people go to watch go-karting (I disagree
however, because here in the UK , Karting is BIG) people don't tend to go an
watch the British Grand Prix of 1967 now-adays...but GPL exists.
If it was done right (GPL style physics) with good tracks and a career mode,
I think it'd be a BIG hit.

You will want to hit the SNES sometimes after just loosing the cup by 1
point because Luigi beat you to the finish line by 0.01second (it happened
to me hehe). I always liked to powerslide off the corners (it's a technique
where you jump, turn in the air and exit the corner with the same momentum
as entering it).

That's just the problem. Why sim what anyone can do for real. It would
be like simulating making a cup of tea. If you want to drive go karts,
go to your local track. If you want to drive an F1 car, you need a
sim.

Oh....and everybody can race Supercarts at 240KMH? A Supercart sim would be
the ultimate driving game. The sense of speed would be fantastic if done
correctly. The force feedback would be brilliant as you point and shoot
around the corners. The corners speeds themselves far exceed just about
everything but F1. I can;t hink of a more pure form of 4 wheeled motorsport.
It is no coincidence that most of the F1 world champs and a lot of the South
American Cart drivers are ex Supercart champions.

Okay, so the consensus is that Virtual Kart's okay? I just
got it in trade for my kids (they LOVE arcade racers!!) but I was
surprised it was still sealed. I didn't want to open it if it sucked.
I remember playing the demo and thinking it was cool, but not worth
what they wanted in the stores for it.
I have a wheel for 'em and they have a Cyrix 200+ w/40MB RAM
and Matrox Mystique 4MB, Win95 and a 15" monitor.

Maybe if I could get GPL and a HyperSimulator for my kids, I would
consider the trade. I think you settled for too little.

It should work fine. I have an MMX P200 w/ 32MB RAM and an 8MB Herc
