Okay, am I the only person (not just with GPL) but I simply do not have what
it takes to be a Hot Lapper or a great qualifier, I can go fast, as I have
shown to others, but I ALWAYS can go faster in races, it seems to give me
motivation when I have someone to chase after, chasing after a time doesn't
seem to get my *** going. For Example, today (racing AI) I qualified with
a 3:22 at Spa, in the race my fastest lap was a 3:20 (with NO slipstream).
That was in the Honda, which I believe are both very fast laptimes, but why
was I faster in the race?? I did 9 qualifying laps! And the race was 9 laps
also, so is it just my head screwing me around?? And do any of you have tips
on getting my head into qualifying mode?
I have no hope!

Well {to me} your times are not bad and if you race in the 3:20s I would
think that you are no novice but an intermediate. I agree though; everyone
cant be a "hot-shoe" Tim. Just think though that mountain {aka goal} gets
smaller & smaller each race..eh? <BG>

Oh and everyone my page should be up again soon, it's 5am, I have been
re-building it all night, also I am keeping a replica on my computer, if it
happens again I simply upload to a new server, so FortuneCity have one
chance left.

I do exactly the same thing. It's because in qual you try to be fast, but in
the race you try to be smooth...
btw. that's not even intermediate, that's fast with Honda ;)
I know what you mean.
ALL of my fastest laps are done in a race.
Having someone to race with seems to motivate me.

Try 3 3 lap sessions with a reduced fuel load, and see if the combo of
fresher tires and less weight do anything for you.

I believe there is only one thing which could help us improve in
qualifying : intermediate times ! If all tracks were
set up so that you could see your intermediate times every kilometer let say,
then at that time you'll have something to race against ! The ideal being that
you'd have just the difference between the intermediate times of your fastest
last and your current lap, somewhat like it shows in race compared to the
fastest AI.
I know there is an add-on that can do that but only once out of GPL. I'd like
something like a little board appearing when you pass the intermediate mark. Any
good programmer around ?

least two laps to warm to the optimum temperature. And the first hot
lap is seldom the fastest.
I'm no programmer... but good idea!

That is a very good point. I'm assuming it isn't lack of motivation
that Tim is describing- he's attacking the course. But after several
laps in a race, you've got a rhythm, your mind is planted in the
situation, and you aren't pushing the car around as much, IMO.
Put it this way, in a qual sess, I always brake too late.
Instinctually I do that becaue I feel that is where I'm getting my
speed. But of course, in most cases, it is the speed I leave the turn
that really matters- and by braking late, I actually come off slower!
Being conservative, as in a race, often means being smooth.
Damn good idea! I am always wondering if a new line I am trying is really
faster. Section timing would let you know real time, not after you have
finished the lap and then it only gives you the previous lap time. Some one
has got to be able to do this. Hey Papy, how about this in a patch?

I'd love that, and I'd also love in-car tire-temps and ability to see
driver order and so forth... but it all start to run in to the fact
that this is a sim of 1967, and there were no in-car radios then
(AFAIK), nor the technology to give instantaneous lap times and
splits.
That said, I'd still put on an add-on that would give me all these
things. Tire temps in particular is something I'd love to see even
more, and which would save me a lot of experiment time.
I am the same. My best laps have come from races in which I spent lap
after lap try to get closer to the car in front, specially when I;m
second in a race; I seem to have the car glued to the track in those
situations, and I never seem to try too hard or blow the engine as
opposed to hot lapping.
My latest solution to this problem (it's been working for me
anyway...) is to have the AI fastest driver (J.Clark in my case, I
like the original drivers names incidently) cars always set in between
1 and 3 seconds faster than my fastest time.
At qualifying, I accelerate it for a bit, until the initial fastest
lap has been set by J.Clark. Then I wait until he crosses the finish
line and set off from the pits in pursue of him, If I overtake after
initially putting some distance between my car and the AI car, then I
am doing well. I usually hit my fastest time in 2 laps nowadays, not
counting the "warm-up 1st lap".
My fastest time in Spa during a race is 3:19.89 driving a Lotus. that
is my absolute record in Spa, which is where I've been racing for the
last 2 months.
I am sure you've seen replays of guys hitting 3.14s in Spa, I just
don't think about those sort of times at the moment, frightening...
MAOA
That may be a little part of it, but having another car in front of
you does help seeing the racing line.
I find for me I get the best times when I don't concentrate on
attacking the course. When I just sort of "zone out" and get into a
rhythm, I find I get my best times. My fastest laps never seem like
really fast laps, either. When I drive like a madman and think I
really nailed a lap, I usually find my times are off, but If I think a
lap was just average, I often find it was blazing fast. Getting into
a smooth rhythm is the key.

Hey baby, wanna kill all the humans?
I completey agree. I think that I go faster in a race because I am aware
that I cannot afford a spin as it will lose too much time. So if I ever get
slightly off line or things get a bit sideways, I will back off a bit during
a race. Whereas during a hotlap attempt, I would keep the throttle nailed
down and probably end up spinning :-(
Obviously in qualifying/hotlap mode, you sub-conciously know that if you
spin you've only lost that lap, so you can push that bit harder (and make
mistakes), but in the race you aim for consistency. Try racing at Grand
Prix level. Here you are also aware that going off will inevitably
bend/break the car, so it is yet another incentive NOT to crash/spin.
Another tip is to go round each corner a gear higher than you would
normally, so eliminating wheel spin. See any lap by Wolfgang Woeger for a
1st class demo of how it should be done!
On the subject of intermediate lap times, I don't know if you guys 'n' gals
have found the GplSplitTimes.exe program written by Dave Noonan. It doesn't
work in game, but it's better than nothing. It's a DOS based program, which
breaks up a lap replay into section times. What I do is open two DOS
windows, download a hotlap replay, and then compare my times with the
hotlap. I can then see where I'm losing time. It's helpful on the shorter
circuits, but difficult at the 'Ring (where each section is only in 1Km,
1.25Km, 1.5Km etc unnamed sections). The program is only a 70K zip file, so
a quick download. I can't remember where I downloaded the file from, but I
still have the original zip file (with readme), so I can post it to
alt.binaries.simulators.autos if anyone wants it.
Just my 2 pence.
Cheers,
Nik
