You read it right!!!! I have just mucked around with my setting for connection and dial-up and have imporved my LATency!!!! in GPL I did a lot of things but mainly got it from.. this site: [link lost in import] What I did was do all the recommended stuff.. turn off error corection.. adjust the buffer sliders.. etc.... Then.. I also changed the PORT setting.. under the Drivers manager.. I also put this intialisation string into the connection.. &N21 This is for my USR / 3Com Sportster Flash 56k v.90(flash upgrade) modem... I then also got this program called iSpeed... get it from TUCOWS... I loaded the OPtimum setting.. plus what this site said to do.. and restarted my pc I dialed up my NEW connection.. and then try a race... Now normally i get about .278 - .333 First lat check... .222 !!! WOW... then in the race .278 !!! Now I normaly get .333 in race.. and that is with about 3 ppl.. I was getting .278 with 3 ppl.. now that may not seem much.. but it iwas enough to make a dif.. no real warping!!! Try it.. If we all have this and get it to workk.. then cook... Voodoo 2.. Win 98 56k V.90 modem I can't garentee this.. but it worked for me.. and I'm not complaining :-) Does anyone else have anything else?? Have I missed something?? if you want the info.. buzz me.. and I'll send it to you.. James Pickard, Melbourne, AUSTRALIA

There are a few things that you mentioned that should have been done anyway, regarding on-line play. I have two dun connections, one for the internet and one for on-line ***. My on-line *** connection has a top connect speed of 26400, with Error Correction and Data Compression turned off. This is adjusted by adding modem initialization strings in the advanced user tab, under the dun connection for my on-line ***. I use a USR 33.6k for on-line *** with the following string: &F1&K0&M0&U10&N13 &F1, just makes sure the modem is reset to standard.. &K0, disables Data Compression, in case Windows forgets. <G> &M0, disables Error Correction, in case Windows forgot. &U10, sets the floor speed to 19200 &N13, sets the ceiling speed to 26400 Also as you said, the FIFO buffers should be to the left, as well as other small refinements such as, Hardware Flow Control enabled etc.. Also, it is a good idea to adjust the port speed in the hardware configuration specs, because Windows default is 9600 baud for both com ports. Also while you are in that area, change the flow control to Hardware as well. (windows default is software).. If yes, that would be great, because I believe turning off error correction is global (i.e., if you do it in DUN setup it effects them all). This way could make error correction truly specific to your *** DUN and leave it on for your other DUNs. Dave Ewing

Um.. i don't think so.. if you change the properties for the modem. / port setfc... it is set for ALL dial-up connections.. but i could be wrong.. but I think I 'm right :-) James

Hi, actually you are both right in a way. <G> If you change the dun settings through a modem initialization string such as i listed earlier, it will only effect the modem you are using for that specific dun. The secret is to set up multiple duns, using a different modem name for each dun, that way you can setup whatever initializtion strings you want to use for what ever dun you happen to be using. I have two set up, one for on-line games and one for the internet. To set up more than one modem, just go into the modems, in the control panel and add another modem. It will not overwrite your normal modem configuration, but will add another modem with a slightly different name, usually adds: #2 #3 etc etc to the end of the modem name. Then just go and make a new dun using the #2 or #3 modem and change the initializtion strings to what ever you want. That way you can have an Error Off, Data Compression Off, slower dun for on-line GPL and all the bells and whistles on for browsing and downloading from the internet etc... Hope that helps a bit. Cheers, Ron
