High-grade potentiometers and TSW versus ECCI wheels

A TSW owner praised the Spectrol potentiometers sold by Thomas Enterprises and asked for anything better. An ECCI representative described the company's own pots and pedal design, prompting debate over whether the post was an advert and comparisons of the TSW and ECCI wheels, including ECCI's large pedals. Others pointed out that similar pots are available cheaply from electronics suppliers, and some balked at $1,500 wheel prices.

Anyone know a source of even better potentiometers than the SPEC pots that can be obtained from Thomas Enterprises? I have been running them for 3 months now (heavy and frequent use) and they still calibrate and move like it was the very first day. They are a bit pricey at $ 65.00 for 3 items plus minor shipping chart outside the U.S. However, the precision and huge lifetime expectancy of one million cycles make up for that in the long run. My calibration is rock solid for months now after the installation of the TSW SPEC pots. These potentiometers do not have a mechanical stop; shaft can turn a full 360 degrees. -- Greg Hellmann "Cause when the feelin's right, i'm gonna race all night."

For long lasting control, especially for steering, you must consider both the pots and the means of connection. ECCI pots have typically lasted two to three years under heavy use conditions. This has been due primarily to the initial quality and proprietary ECCI enhancements of the potentionmeters. Regarding basic component quality, the ECCI enhanced pots we distribute to our customers are the ONLY ones that have survived our torture tests that simulate years of intense use. We now announce a new feature that will further enhance ECCI pot performance, the new ECCI steering pot connector. This enhancement is the result of our extensive research into factors that lead to potentiometer failure. To improve our performance even more than our historical record has evidenced, we are now specifying in our 1999 CDS4000 series steering units, a newly designed flexible machined aircraft aluminum connector, that is completely rigid in rotation, yet flexible enough in bending to minimize eccentric loading of the steering pot. This allows the steering to have the precision and instantaneous response of a rigid connection, but with the longer life of a flexible, bendable connector. This new connector is also available as an upgrade to all previous ECCI systems (except for the very early version of the original CDS, which has a gear drive pot setup). All ECCI electrical components including potentiometers are warranted against failure or control inconsistency for one year, regardless of the frequency of use. We apologize in advance to non-ECCI owners who may be interested in these components, but these parts are designed specifically for use in ECCI controllers, and only registered ECCI owners are eligible to purchase them. I didn't think the post was "snobbish" or "arrogant" -- ECCI has obviously done a lot of research to help provide their customers with the very best product they can. The ECCI wheel is much pricier than the TSW product, so I'm sure that people who would consider buying an ECCI wheel will be glad to hear that ECCI is so thorough in their research and testing. Ive driven with an ECCI and the wheel is superb as is the TSW. My only complaint about the ECCI (besides the price ;) ) are the pedals they use from Sherman Tanks <VBG> Although Im sure they will last forever... I just wish they were a bit more.. um, automotive like I guess is the best word I can come up with =) But heck... I couldnt convince my wife to let me spend over $1,000 on a steering device if my life depended on it. I have also used an ECCI, and totaly agree with Scott as far as it being much better quality than a TSW, and the pedals being not realistic at all. I found a wheel that is priced with the lower end TSW's, that has the most realistic pedals I've seen yet (swing down) and is ECCI quality............check it out, you won't regret it! http://www.mindspring.com/~srcwheel/ Dave Trager - DTrager 1998 NROS Pro Div. Woodie, Im currently using a Thrustmaster NPro and I race in my socks all the time. I cant wear shoes while racing because my feet are too big for the pedals I guess =) When I used the ECCI pedals I felt like I should be hauling a wagon of fertilizer behind me and wearing a green John Deer hat or something. ROFL Again... Let me say that the ECCI are built fantastically and they work great. The wheel is a very accurate and precise. The pedals work superbly as well... just my opinion that they are a little too "industrial" for my taste is all. Scott PA-Scott -- Scott B. No, the CDS 4000 pedals do not look like the pedals found in a race car, but this is because they are engineered to be the most comfortable for long distance racing at a computer desktop - a situation quite dirfferent from that of sitting in a race car. At ECCI, we have designed and extensively tested many pedal options, including several hang-down configurations to determine what we would offer for our next generation product, the CDS4000. We refrained from offering the hang-down pedal solution, because we discovered that in a long distance racing situation the heel-pivoting blade pedal offered the least fatigue and best long distance confort of any solution tested. We may still consider offering a hang-down pedal solution in the future, but if we do this at all, it will only be a limited edition product. Long distance performance is still our focus, for we still hold this factor as a higher priority than simply replicating what might be found in a race car. I buy Spectrol pot's for some of the equipment that I build. They are about $11 from Ack inc. (770-351-6340). I've seen the ones at the TSW site. The only difference is that TSW solders on a pigtail so that you can just plug it in. If you don't have a soldering iron then I guess it's worth the extra 30 bucks. Not to me. BTW the pots are probably "10 turn"

That's strange, the pedals are my absolute favorite thing about my ECCI. The only ones I've seen where I didn't need shoes, and I find that to be important. Go figure. Don McCorkle Libertarian Motorsports
Hi Scott, I had the same thought when I first setup my ECCI wheel and pedals. Man those pedals are big! But after using them now for about 5 months I think they are really great. The foot area is large enough to allow you to try different foot positions, which is nice in a really long race and you feel those cramps sneaking up on you. Also, if you have the Pressure Brake upgrade, you need the extra weight of those pedals as the extra force needed to push them would slide them across the floor. As it is I am on hardwood floors and I had to put a small board along my baseboard to keep the pedals from moving. I also had to put a backstop on my chair to keep it from moving. After doing that, everything just clicked and I'm happy I spent the extra money. They are a great product and will last me a lifetime. There are lots of choices out there and most of them are very good, but all the less expensive options have really bad pedals. ECCI and TSW seem to be amoung the best out there. -David. >Ive driven with an ECCI and the wheel is superb as is the TSW. >My only complaint about the ECCI (besides the price ;) ) are the pedals they >use from Sherman Tanks <VBG> >Although Im sure they will last forever... Andy, are the 100K ECCI pots that you offer and supply with your systems of better quality than the high grade SPEC pots of the TSW F99 ? Those seem to be the best potentiometers out there. Rumour has it that there are even better ones, but there has never been any real specification or description of a better potentiometer than the one offered by Thomas Enterprises (kit can be ordered from them also by non-TSW owners). Andy, i am talking mere pot quality here. It'd be appreciated if you could reveal more data on your potentiometers, if not classified that is :-) Of course I do see your point with the pot/steering shaft connection as I ruined my brake pedal potentiometer because pot movement is not entirely independent from shock load. But i mean.....what about the quality, precision, calibration and lifetime of just the pot? You claim that they last three years of two hour per day use. Question that is still unanswered is the following: Are the ECCI pots better than the ones I stated above in my initial post ? And if so, why ? Perhaps this cannot be answered....you tell me. Truly amazed by the 1999 ECCI products though. If it weren't for the cherry-red design.....naah, can't spend $ 2000 for another wheel. -- Greg Hellmann "Cause when the feelin's right, i'm gonna race all night."
Definitely, Eric. :-) I hope GP3 hits shelves this year. However, I got information that Jaques Villeneuve is involved in the development of Ubisoft Racing Simulation3....but probably Geoff Crammond can do even better. I filled out your survey. Is the gameport of the SB Live really so superior over gamecards? Because that would mean I could have an ISA free system. Are you sure the pots you mentioned are really identical with the high grade SPEC pots on the Thomas' site ? I am not sure really. -- Greg Hellmann "Cause when the feelin's right, i'm gonna race all night." Eric Cote schrieb in Nachricht

No problem. I don't own either, but have used both. Both are superb wheels and I just didnt want to pass judgement on products I havent owned for a length of time is all. =) Scott PA-Scott -- Scott B. Husted ICQ# 4395450

Hey rrevved, how did you spec out the TSW? As a custom build or purchase add-ons and have them install them (for an additional $55.00)? The TSW Stock is $375.00, clutch is $105.00, the dual switch is $35.00, the Sport Racing Pedals are $60, a spare set od Spec Pots are $65.00. Its the GT kit at an additional $275.00 that has me wondering. If i'm replacing the original wheel and pots I should get a credit for the difference, yes? I sent them an email and haven't heard back, so I figured I would ask you as our setups are the same (except for the pedals and Spec pots). Do they adjust the price when you "custom order"? Thanks.. That's the best thing about ECCI - you won't have any problems to be repaired! I started off with a CDS1 years ago, and bought the CDS4000 last year. Each of them drives the same way today as when I first took it out of the box. -Koz www.insidesimracing.com
