Nascar Revolution - In praise of (quite long)

4 posts by 4 people · 12 Apr 1999 - 13 Apr 1999

This game has taken quite a battering on this newsgroup and for good reason. However, the advent of the beta patch has undoubtedly brought about some very worthwhile, and indeed necessary improvements, most notably in the area of game speed, which when using the bumper view is as awesome as any game I've played, including TOCA2. I would even go so far as to say that it is tons better than Nascar 1999 in the following areas:- - Vastly superior game presentation - The game speed is altogether more convincing - The cars bounce all over the place at appropriate points on the tracks, e.g. turn three at Talladega - The cars themselves look incredible - The game can run superbly using Direct 3D, therefore opening it up to a wider audience - The tracks are very wide and narrow as in real life, unlike the Papyrus game which arguably has unrealistically-narrow circuits - You can actually turn your car over, but the really neat thing is that the car physics are quite accurate and it is some time before this happens to you. I believe Nascar 3 will be offering this important feature. - Your car is driven by the computer during yellow cautions, giving you a welcome breather in a long race (Okay I know a "real" sim wouldn't do this, but who can deny that driving in caution periods in N99 is harder than at full racing pelt?) - The shading and lighting effects add superb atmosphere In saying the above I acknowledge that the game is not without its faults, as we all know. The new patch has failed to adequately address the following major bozos:- - Unacceptable scenery pop-up on some circuits - Opponent AI is still far too aggressive - No save game facility except during pit-stops The main disappointment with this game is that, in common with almost every PC title these days, it was released too damn early. A lot of people have been told the game is mediocre and formed a negative opinion and rightly so because it didn't play half as well before the patch was introduced. If this game proves to be a flop, EA has only itself to blame for being too trigger happy with the release button. For myself, I doubt that I will be so full of praise for Papyrus games in the future. Ot at least until Nascar 3 arrives.

It's personnal preference. I like the slick and classy Papyrus presentation. You don't always need flashy menus... Too much is not enough many times. There is still slowdowns with the patch. Hmm but it's canned.. it's just there without any effect on the handling of the car. Yoda once said.. Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try... Sorry but they look very cartoony. Tyres that go outside the bodies.. The cars look anything but real-life Stock-cars. Look at the NR99 body at simracing.com or N3... Nr99 runs superbly in software mode. Still, D3D doesn't fix the lamentable physics even with the patch... The tracks are false. Look at the unrealistic road course. Or Michigan... The track accuracy is 0 compared to 99% for Papyrus. And ovals are narrow.. not wide as you think. No they are not accurate. The car as about no weight when it's launched into the air. It will tilt without a problem, without any realistic physics. Look at GPL or N3 to see realistic 3d physics. It's one of the worse feature in NRevolution. Doesn't fix the poor gameplay and old game engine. It's just a bad product. Nothing more to say... Of course there is some "little" nice features, but it's like that everywhere. Psygnosis F1 arcade games have excellent track accuracy.. but it doesn't mean it,s a great title compared to MGPRS2 or Gp2. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -- NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -- SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -- Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -- May the Downforce be with you... Unfortunately not too many NASCAR drivers sit on their bumper, and when you use the favoured in-car view NAS-Rev has substantially less poke than Mr. Bobbit. - Hype - Failing to deliver - Shiny box - Unhappy traffic on every feedback medium known to man - Mirth inducement Wow, when you think about it you're right, NAS-Rev is a standard setter in some areas.... :-) Cheers!
