Subject: ?????????GPL Frame Rate ??????????????? Date: 10 April 1999 14:19 I am sure this is a pretty dumb question but as they say .....nothing ventured I was reading about overclocking the new Voodoo 3 on the Sharky extreme page http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/3dfx_v3_oc/ In one section he makes a reference to improving frame rates in glide based applications by disabling V-sync. quote.......................... "Turn off that V-sync" Another important feature (and indeed simple to implement) to consider is V-sync. By turning the function off you'll see an immense improvement in your in-game frame rates. For Glide based games you'll need to simply add in a single line into your autoexec.bat file found in the root directory. SET FX_GLIDESWAPINTERVAL=0 Being a newbie I do not even know what V-Sync is but I Tried what was suggested. I added the line in my autoexec.bat. In Win 98 Start----run---sysedit After a reboot, straight into GPL for race and I THINK there was an improvement in frame rate. So I would appreciate some feedback on this, technical and Hands on i.e. Try it for yourself, or if you know better let me know. So let us know what you think, as you know there is nothing as bad as 15 f.p.s. at the start of each race. System P2 350 , 128 Mb ram, Voodoo 2 , 19 inch monitor , Resolution in GPL 800*600 Thanks K.R.
GPL is limited to 36 fps, and I guess your refresh rate isn't less than 60 hz so no point in disabling V-sync, I think. But maybe I'm wrong! Borut

I put ALL graphics on at 900X(?)800 and the sounds heard to 16. I went to the Glen and moved the car to the start finish line as soon as I could and stopped. At that point I had 21.x FPS steady. I went back and edited the Autoexec.bat and rebooted. Did the same test and got 20.x with the occasional 19.X FPS. So, in my case, This feature doesn't work. Or at least on my machine. The 36.x FPS issue... when I have the right combination of sound and graphics I get 36.X FPS. I also watch the counter and it bounces between 36, 37, 38. I'll assume that if there is a limit as you suggest then my machine can get better FPSs. I'll again assume that it is getting the 38.x but recalculates and forces the 36.x? I haven't a clue to what I'm saying here but I do see the 36, 37, 38 rapidly changing between them.

Is there a way to either keep those drivers from entering the race such as a TENs Muzzle feature? I don't want to muzzle all the drivers because some of the bad drivers are in the process of learning. At most I want to kick the ones off the system that DO NOT have 36FPS and refuse to take some graphics off and or don't understand the effects of less then 36. At the start line, most everyone will have less then 36. But after a half lap they should get 36. Maybe at the very least we should start a thread once a week or so explaining why we run with some graphics and sounds turned off to achieve that 36FPS with hopes to convince these 20 - 30 FPS people.(?)

Mike, I have questions regarding framerate as well since I have 36fps and no matter what I turn off... the frame counter NEVER goes above 36fps ?? So I just leave everything maxed out <VBG> Only drop to low 30s at start of race. Scott PA-Scott G.T.S. Racing - http://home.earthlink.net/~sbhusted/GTS/gts.html

V-Sync means that your graphics board waits for a vertical retrace (which occurs approx. every 1/70th second - it depends on the refresh rate you set, when your monitor starts to draw a new picture) before flipping pages - i.e. replacing the old picture with the new one. This improves image quality, but your framerate is lower because the board and the cpu spend a lot of time on waiting for that damn vertical retrace to happen ;-) Turning V-Sync off will improve performance at the cost of image quality (you may see some 'blurring'), but you can decide yourself whether it's worth the performance gain or not. However, I don't know how you can find out who is running at a frame rate that is less than 36fps (or even those that are running at 36fps). Here's also hoping that the patch will address the frame rate and clock smash problem. % At the start line, most everyone will have less then 36. But after a half lap % they should get 36. Well every other week I post Alison's GPL FAQ's and I believe the Online FAQ talks about this. But, it wouldn't hurt to make a pointed effort to post a "reminder" once and awhile that talks about this issue. I agree, I think some people joining via VROC haven't read or don't understand the problems this may cause. -- **************************** Michael E. Now, if you you disable more graphics, don't you also lose the visual cues that you NEED to drive better...? Eldred __ Put your message in a modem, and throw it in the ***-sea... remove SPAM-OFF to reply.

Depends *WHICH* graphics features you turn off? Does having the clouds, crowds or the horizon enabled give you visual clues? You can also turn off textures, so you still see objects, but they are not textured. You can also turn off the lighting effects, sparks, etc, which do not aid the driver, but save valueable cpu cycles? 8-) *Peter* #:-)
