I am just wondering if any sim racers (online or offline) have any views if
assuming fps is 36(ish) on average, whether having the arms and steering
wheel showing is an advantage or not in GPL. I have just tried for the
first time racing without the arms and wheel graphics, and think that maybe
I can anticipate the cars movements better. Anybody any views on this?
Instinctively, I like the more 'authentic look', with arms and wheel.
Steve
Yes, Because I have a P200 I originally turned the arms off to boost my
framerate. However before long I found I could control the car much more
easily and my laptimes dropped as a result. I don't think it's cheating
since I already have one pair of arms and don't really need another...!

If you have any plans to race on-line, you will probably have to turn off
the arms to get the required frame rate. Therefore, I have decided it's
best to drive without them at all times because switching from one mode to
the other is distracting.

There was some good debates about the arms and wheel when the title wasn't
out (neither the demo). I say it's to everybody's personal preference. I
personally can't live without them. I will take off other stuff to get a
36fps instead of them. You can get them non-textures also in the option
menu.
I feel it's a great addition to the simracing experience (with the 3d
***pit), and I expect other companies to get with it. Codemaster has
developed a quite good way on their side also, but not as good (the GPL
***pit doesn't distract IMHO, it blends naturally with your sensations).

I dont think it detracts from controlling the car. And you have to remember
when you get rid of the arms in your***pit it also gets rid of them in all
the other cars***pits saving a lot of graphic prossesing. With a p200
voodoo1 this is the only way to go.

on...

Personally, I find that the arms/wheel "mask" some of the subtle cues
provided by the moving 3d***pit. They are still there, but the subtle
ones just don't translate as well when there is more to see on the
screen (the arms and steering wheel).

I didn't realize it affected the OTHER cars also...I'll have to try that...

I've had them off for ages now :o)
I've found that I kept looking at the steering wheel/arms when cornering or
recovering
the car. It has led me to some sort of driver's oscilations (when you keep
correcting the
car from left to right and vice versa) which in turn lead me to a spin. I'm
much better off
if I look at front wheels turning then looking at the steering wheel turning.
Also, the amount of travel of my physical & virtual wheel isn't the same (I
turn 10deg physical and
get 15deg of virtual steering wheel travel) which made it hard to drive the car
fast.
It also improves your frame rate :o)
Turn it off, it helped me improve my times and consistency...

My opinion differs in that I'm using a j-stick. It's easier to "see"
what your arms are doing on the wheel. It they are flailing around, I
know I need to be easier on the ole' stick of joy... (no rude comments,
please).
When my controller is done (this week, I hope), then i too may turn them
off because, like you say, one set is enough.

begin to shake as an early-warning indication that the car is about to lose
traction, so it might be a good idea to have them on. Ideas anyone?
Uwe
It sure does. As to the positive effect, I might be monitoring the
wheel sub-consciously (sp?) so I'm not sure if it helps. I think if
somebody asked me what I do while driving I wouldn't have a clue!
