I thought my system was dead at 233MMX but looking at www.powerleap.com suggests I may be able to shift it up to an AMD K6-2 400. How well does GPL run on K6-2 ? I would be teaming it with 512kB L2 cache, 66Mhz main bus speed, 48Mb RAM, and an 8Mb V2 Anybody got figures for K6-2 performance ? Thanks Andy

Erm, sorry, but that's crap! :) I have a K6-2 300 (o/c to 315) coupled to a Canopus Pure 3DII 12mb voodoo 2 and GPL runs fine, although not as fast as the Intel equivalent. Generally in multiplayer races my framerate is always at least 20-30 fps, maxing out at GPL's limit of 36/37 when not much is going on. Starts from the back of the grid with 19 computer cars are a bit of a joke (5-15fps!), but for multiplayer (where CPU is not loaded down with AI) it is fine. If you're going for a 400, multiplayer definitely shouldn't be a problem, and even if it is, it will only be for the starts in big fields. If you're a single player fanatic though (god knows why?!), Intel chips still rule the GPL roost. Hope this helps. Mike West. 3DNow! I have an AMD K6-2 350mhz with 64 MB PC100 Ram, Diamond Monster Fusion Banshee card, SBLive Value video card. The game runs fine I get 36fps with everything on in 640x480 and all 19 cars.. I also get no less than 30 fps in 800x600 in the same situation. I ame running on a 100mhz bus. Hope this helps. Saint19 >>I am not completely certain about this, but I am pretty sure that GPL won't

AMD K6-2/300 not o/clocked, 64mb pc-100 ram, Guillamot 16mb Voodoo Banshee. 36 fps almost all the time. Never seen less than 28fps even at back of field with 19 cars. I would have to say that AMD works quite well. Joe

I am not completely certain about this, but I am pretty sure that GPL won't run on an AMD processor. Greg

This HAS to be wrong, Greg -- I don't have the full version of GPL (yeah, I'm a heretic -- everybody flame me now), but the demo version ran fine on my K6-266 with 32MB of RAM and a Canopus Pure 3D (Voodoo 1) video card. Can anybody confirm how the full release version of GPL runs on a K6 system??? -- JB
AMD K6-400 Mhz, 64 MB, 256 kB cache, 16 MB PowerGrafx Voodoo Banshee, GPL runs at solid 36 fps when running full details offline without AI, and also at 36 fps when online with 10+ cars and some details off. Quite adequate for online racing for example. Oh yeah, I'm using 600x480 resolution but it's about the same at 800x600. - "If the meaning of life was printed in a book, someone would use it to keep the window open."

You are wrong. There is no conflict between an AMD processor and GPL. I am not sure where you heard this, but it must have been from a pro-Intel user. I have played GPL numerous times with my K6-2 400 and Monster 3d and have had no problems. Of course we AMD users would appreciate more 3dnow support, but its growing slowly. Ex

If I'm not mistaken, the latest Glide builds use 3DNow instructions...at least AMD had said they would, Scott Moore

I had an e-mail reply, so I'd better quantify this a bit further. I'm running with all graphics options on max in 1024x768 res, and framerates are fine for LAN play which is my normal. GPL does max out on framerate a lot of the time even in that set up, but obviously not on starts with a big grid. If I want to play on VROC, then I drop down to 800x600 with the same graphics options, or turn a couple of things off, and can then maintain 35+fps 95% of the time. The guy who replied also said that if someone with a low framerate joins your game, you notice the slowdown. This may be true online, but for LAN games, there is no noticeable difference (unless they have permanent 2fps!) I've also got AMD K62-400, 64M, 512 cache, 8M Thriller, and it runs virtually as Toni says below. I use 800X600 off-line, 640X480 online. Virtually always get 30+ frame rates. Tomshardware has the figures.
