Is it possible that from an "in car" view ,gpl is reaching only about 15
FPS?From the behind view it gets 36 fps.
Even with the mirrors set to show only the cars, it doesn`t get any
better.I`m talking about training, without other cars.The graphics are awful
compared to the rendition and voodoo2.Does anybody have some different
experience?

The OpenGL driver uses a particular call to map the images onto the mirrors,
and that call is unoptimized in the TNT drivers. I've already posted two
"requests" for a fix at nvidia's website (not that I expect them to oblige,
but it would be nice).
Check the Core.ini file for a line that reads "mirrors every" - it defaults
to 1, but performance will improve if you set it to 4 or 8. It really ruins
the mirrors, and this problem is the only reason why I still have my
original Monster 3d in my machine. I'd much rather have a A3D sound card to
replace my ancient sb16, but I don't have the slots.

With the following in core.ini and using the 0.48 Nvidea reference drivers,
I get 36 fps most of the time:
[ Int Profile Values ]
value0 = OpenGL:TossHighestMip:0 ; do not change
value1 = OpenGL:MipFiltering:0 ; do not change
value2 = OpenGL:MirrorsEvery:0 ; do not change
[ OpenGL ]
TossHighestMip = 0 ;
MipFiltering = 4 ;
MirrorsEvery = 4 ;
I find mirrorsevery at 4 just being sufficient for online racing.
More on this is in the readme that comes with the papy OpenGl patch.

Thanks to both!
I`ll try that.
I looked in my "core.ini" file (GPL), I could not find the above lines to
alter!
Are they sposed to be there already, or do the have to be added?

You have to add them. There is a sample core.ini in the Opengl.zip file.

Sorry, didn't make myself clear enough? I know opengl and 3Dfx are
different.
I meant does this entry in the core.ini file (specifically the entries
relating to the mirror refresh) help speed up graphics and improve fps
when using a 3Dfx card, or *only* for Opengl stuff?
Which your statement below now answers, thanks anyway.

Only for OpenGL

However, one can speed up their fps with 3dfx cards by using the
glide-wrapper found at
http://www.grandprix2.com/gpl/patches/glide2x_253.zip
One can set the mirrors to refresh at different rates and will thus
improve frame rate.

% Thanks for the info Michael. Do you think its worth it though?
% Voodoo2 on a 17" monitor at 800 x 600 on an Abit bx6 m/b and get 36fps
% on GPL with most options on, (during offline use). However, I tend to
% turn the graphics down a tad for *on-line* racing and pretty much
% maintain 36fps for most of the time here too.
% So would there be any real benefit in using the wrapper for me?
It would more than likely allow you to be online with more detail turned
on or even run at the next higher resolution. The wrapper is easy to
use and easy to uninstall. There are a couple of tracks in GPL that
really seem to suck frame rates at some of the turns. Even dropping
from 36fps to 32fps can rob you of some prescious 1/10's of a second due
to car control degradation. I think it's worth a go, just to see for
yourself.
