I've tried the sound.dat file with sounds converted from 8 bit to 16 bit and
it's a bit better but not fantastic. I've been told that reducing audio
hardware accelleration in Win98 does the trick but I'm on Win95.
So, does the reducing audio accelleration bit do the job in Win98 or was
someone just guessing?
If it does work, is there a way of achieving the same result in Win95?
I also heard that Win98 was just "Win95 with all of the updates". Is this
true? If so, there must be an update I can just download to give me this
functionality. Yes?
I wish I'd never gotten rid of my old ISA AWE32 Value now.
BTW, my Win95 version is 4.00.950a.
I hope someone can help, 'cause that crackling is driving me insane.
TIA

Try turning the volume all the way up in the sound options in the game, then
set your wave volume in the SB mixer to about three quarter volume and the
main volume in SB mixer to about one quarter then just adjust the volume in
the game via your speakers.I had the same problem as you but only noticed it
after I had turned the main volume in SB mixer up.I turned it back down and
it is sounding great again.
Hope this helps.
Sid.
Well, this is the most helpful news I've heard so far, it just didn't help
me at all (though this thread wasn't started by me, I have same symptoms).
With my sblive, doing exactly what you said made the volume too quiet to
hear. I always left the in-game volume all the way up, but played with the
other two to get the following results:
main 1/2, wave 3/4: Cutting out and worse static, exactly like my sb16 was.
main 3/4, wave 3/4: louder static, no cutting out
main full, wave 3/4: how it originally was, high rpm static
main full, wave 1/2: had to turn up speaker volume, loud static, no cutting
out.
Also, ever since I installed the sblive, I hear a popping at the end of the
.wav rotation. Every 5 or 6 seconds at low rpm, every 2-3 seconds at high
rpm. I'm tempted to put my sb16 back in and play with the volumes a little,
since I didn't before. What happens when an isa sb16 and a pci sblive are
installed at the same time?

Ive a SB PCI 128 as well. I downloaded the new sound.dat file and it corrected
everything for me. Sounds great now... well, it doesnt sound great as cars
are constantly passing you <VBG>.. but you know what I mean ;)
This is the link where I got the sound.dat that I use without anymore problems:

Thanks for the suggestions, friends, but they aren't working for me.
I'm gutted. I only went PCI to try and ease the strain on my -very- old CPU
(Original pentium 200 - remember those?). As you can guess, expensive
upgrades are out, but the PCI128 was only a 17 net cost after selling my
ISA card. Wish I hadn't bothered.
Oh well, if anyone else has some other suggestions, they're all welcome.
Reducing audio accelleration in Win95 anyone?
Thanks again,
Mark

Just out of curiosity, is anyone getting static with a 300mhz processor or
faster? Could it be out p200's are the problem?

sorry Brian,
i have a pII-300 voodoo2 video+ brand new monster mx300 sound card.
tho the graphics are free-er the sound is...weaker(?) and i have a
snapply crackle ON OCCASSION - but not always. i thought it was
internet related since i do most of my racing online...but running
offline gets same results.
"sound heard" (tho capable of 16) and near 36 fps affects my
thrustmaster nascar-pro wheel (twitchy). before i had a dedicated game
card (ACM from ThrsMstr) but wne i reduce "sounds heard" to 5 the
steering is fine.
i have latest drivers :(
