Reviewer defends negative Sports Car GT demo review

The author of a website review that panned the Sports Car GT demo for having only one track defended himself, and posters mocked his spelling mistakes. Others argued that most racing demos include only one track and questioned the point of reviewing demos as stand-alone products.

First off...I know its spelled brakes, I made a mistake. Secondly, I know lime rock is a real-life race track...9/10 people don't. Finally, I know there is going to be more then one track in the full version, but including only a single crappy track in a demo is a waste of time to download. If it takes 2 hours for the average home user connection to get, and only one track is available, the game is not worthy of a higher score. If you're going to e-mail me again, please do not make yourself sound like an idiot by trying to insult my intelligence. What you're missing here is that the demo was reviewed from the point of view of the average gamer, not racing or sim fans/experts. Also, I made it clear in the review if you had actually read it, that it is a worthy download for anyone who is into sim or racing games. Thanks for your input...you've changed my whole view on games, really. -Eric Rasmussen
> First off...I know its spelled brakes, I made a mistake. Twice in the same review? Nope. You didn't know how to spell it. I guess you (and your editor) have never heard of proofreading, either. track...9/10 people don't. I don't think you should be addressing the general public, you should be addressing people who would be interested in the demo, namely race game/sim fans who probably know about Lime Rock at a rate greater than 10% of their number. one track in the full track in a demo is a waste of average home user connection game is not worthy of a higher It took me 2 hours to download and I have no trouble with the fact that there is only one track because it's a fun track to drive. If you knew how to drive or cared a whit about racing sims/games you could potentially enjoy it also. As far as I can tell, that one track takes up about 3 meg of data. If you are ***ing about 2 hours for one track, are you not going to *** about 2 1/2 hours for 3 tracks? No-one has picked on your scoring of the game, either. . intelligence. I don't have to insult your intelligence, you do a fine job of making yourself look like an idiot. I pointed out that you have no business reviewing this type of demo because you have no ability to assess it in the areas that interest the people who are likely to be interested in it. I stand by that and I seriously doubt anyone but you is going to think any differently. I'll be reading r.a.s. waiting for someone to leap to your defense for this ridiculous review. view of the average gamer, clear in the review if you download for anyone who is into Please post the part of the review where that is stated, clearly or any other way. I read it very thoroughly and saw nothing even suggesting that. In addition, what is the sense in reviewing a game from the point of view of someone who doesn't/isn't going to care about it? I personally find first-person shooters to be a b***an unpleasant form of PC game. Do I think reviewers should gear their reviews to me by writing: "You get to be some guy who runs around someplace and shoots other things. You can get some different guns that all seem to shoot OK but I couldn't aim one of them and got bored. There were adjustments for some things in the game but I didn't understand them so maybe they will be useful to you if you do. I tried to find someone to play multiplayer with me, but they said the game was stupid, so I stopped trying." C'mon..who is this review supposed to inform? It was absolute, pointless ***and if I were you I would be embarrassed to put my name on it. I do give you credit for coming here and letting us beat you up, though. view on games, really. This guy better hope he never gets the chance to review a WWII combat flight sim. The propellor heads are a pretty demanding bunch when it comes to realism, and their tolerance of bad reviews is pretty low. Makes all the RAS folks look pretty tame in comparison. Stephen

>First off...I know its spelled brakes, I made a mistake. Never used a spell check? So tell them instead of saying "wherever the hell that may be". Ultimate Race Pro, F1 Racing Simulation, Johnny Herbert Grand Prix, TOCA2, TOCA, all had one track only too. I cant recall any racing game which has multiple tracks to race on in the DEMO. The "average" gamer will want to use his brakes for a start. Maybe you should try getting a licence and driving a real car to get a feel for what racing sims/games are all about? Perhaps you would feel better when someone produces a bumper-car ride simulator so you would never have to lift your foot off the gas! >not racing or sim fans/experts. Also, I made it clear in the review if you >had actually read it, that it is a worthy download for anyone who is into >sim or racing games. "It will have replay value if you're into customizing cars, assuming you know what you're doing. " And a little bit later "You get the idea... but for any racing fan this game does have a lot to offer." I hardly think thats making it clear, especially when its buried amongst your derogatory comments about having "only one track" and ***ing about the size of the file. >Thanks for your input...you've changed my whole view on games, really. >-Eric Rasmussen And you've given us a good reason NOT to go to 3d***.net again! -- Nathan Wong http://www.nectar.com.au/~alfacors Alfa Romeo - Super Touring - Club Cars http://fullspeed.to/astc Australian Super Touring Championship News and Information

One of the Nascar 2 demos allowed the choice of Atlanta or the Glen. Ah, trivia... it's so... so... trivial. LOL! How true, how true! Let's see... another one you see in "gearhead" posts is 'lose' and 'loose' used often and incorrectly in place of one another... and spellcheck *correctly* recognizes them as being spelled correctly. Usage is another matter.... But... many of the folks posting here are not native English speakers, so they get my respect and understanding if not correct... I mean, if I tried posting in the two language I *know* (Spanish and German), I would *** the grammar, etc. Now, for Brits, Aussies and Americans to make "breaking" mistakes, well, come on guys... you can do better. --Dave

> >First off...I know its spelled brakes, I made a mistake. > Never used a spell check? Actually, break is spelled correctly, it just isn't the right word. Spell checkers don't check to see if you are using the right words. In reality, shouldn't someone who is writing for public consumption actually know how to spell in the first place? I do, and the guy who wrote this 'review' said I am an idiot, so it must not be that hard to do. ~daxe -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com/ The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! -----------== Over 66,000 Groups, Plus a Dedicated Binaries Server ==----------

No....it was a DEMO REVIEW. Not a full-version review.

Oh it was? I didn't realize that. But wouldn't the guys STILL take into consideration that a demo normally has 1 track only and that a demo is not meant to be the last thing you play? A demo is made to be played to test what you think and then go out and get the full version which will be better with all stuff in it. This guy seems to be thinking that EVERYTHING should be in the game already and that no one should buy the game since the demo should have it all. Jesse |No....it was a DEMO REVIEW. Exactly--this wasn't a review of a racing game, it was a review of a demo based on a download time/fun time ratio. It was also aimed at the average gamer. Based on those criteria, it was quite good. -The Enigmatic One

I agree. If you are going to review something as a demo than you have to treat it for what it's meant to be and not any more. Well, the purpose of that particular web site is to review *demos*. Strange concept, but that seems to be their raison d'etre. Too bad their actual reviewers are hopeless (browse some of the other sim reviews. Among other things, you will find yet more childish *** innuendo and a coplete lack of understanding of what racing games are all about). So, they have a purpose, and yet they are pointless. > Exactly--this wasn't a review of a racing game, it was a review of a >demo based on a download time/fun time ratio. It was also aimed at the average >gamer. Based on those criteria, it was quite good. Given that it was free I think the amount of fun you get out versus the amount of time going in is pretty good. I don't especially like SCGT demo in the way it shows the direction of the full game, but as a free download (and a multiplayer enabled one at that) it's pretty damn good. Cheers! John
>No....it was a DEMO REVIEW. Not a full-version review. What is the point in reviewing a demo? I can perhaps begin to see some point if you review it as an indication of what the full product will be like, but if you review it solely on a stand-alone basis then you can't take the price into account. You must review it on the basis of being free, in which case SCGT becomes extraordinarily good value. If that came out as freeware even with only a couple of cars and tracks people would be mighty impressed and begging for it to be made into a full product. Why then slam the demo? It's bad enough people reviewing unfinished beta copies and claiming "exclusives", even worse when these people have no idea about the genre of software they're damaging. When you resort to reviewing demos and toasting them, particularly by a guy who enjoys nothing more challenging than Outrun, it's a total nonsense. Many of these *** sites seem to do more harm than good in the way they're organised and "managed". Cheers! John
A hypothesis - could the reason be that they review "exclusively demos" because no manufacturer is looney tunes enough to send them any software to review? A pointless purpose? Can there be anything more miserable to strive for? Cheers! John
Yeah, but that just adds up to twice the aggro! :) > Hmmm, I believe the latest Cart:PR demo had 2 tracks. :-) > Remco
