So I've spent all day driving around Spa in a ferrari. In GPL you understand
I've just gone under the 3:30 barrier and all I can say is WOOOO HOOOO
It feels SOOOoooooooooo........ good.
Anyone tell me how to go quicker?
I'm through the Masta Kink at 160-165. Is that slow?
Doug
Well I've only been 3m27 in the Ferrari but I didn't try that hard.
A few things is to try and maintain your speed through the corner, even if
it means going a bit slower into it. This is key at all tracks but at Spa
you can gain much more time by beeing that tiny bit slower in so you keep
control of the car till the exit.
And at Masta that sounds about right, but I'm sure you could get through
quicker. Brake really early for that and start to accelerate again right
away. Just watch out for the houses :-)
Bryan
House...what houssaaaaaaaaghghghghghghghgh
Bollocks.

Spa IS a blast, isn't it? Your anxiety builds all the way down those long
straights. "Am I gonna make it through the Kink this time? What if I hold it
on just a bit longer? AhhhhhhhlllllllRIGHT!" Or not........ Going through
the Kink is like lining up a rifle shot, holding your breath, and pulling the
trigger. Except if you miss, YOU get blasted. The chicane at Monaco is a bit
like that also, but without the long buildup. As for speed, a good pass
through the Kink will bottom out at about 175 just past the second apex. I've
seen replays that don't go below 180, and they ended up doing over 200 going
into Stavelot!

I found a lot of time at Les Combes (turn in early and drift round the
apron) and Stavelot (scrub speed on entry, gingerly on the right-hand bit
and foot to the floor through the 2nd "S"), dropping my times from the 3m27s
range to the occasional 3m24s. Also, nailing Eau Rouge just right (so you
exit flat out in a 4W-drift from the second part) gets you half a second.
Bryan's right about Masta... go in too hot and you'll crash or scrub too
much speed. Quick dab on the brakes (+downshift on heavy fuel load) and then
power through is the right technique. -My setup attached for reference.

My best at Spa with the Ferrari is 3m17.9. I know my friend Wolfgang
Woeger has managed to clock a 3m15.x, how he did that I'll never know.
Take a look at http://gpl.gamesmania.com to see the top times.
I usually run through at around 175-180mph. This is, however, after 6
months of practice and repeated intimate moments with the surrounding
houses :-)
Basically I don't brake here, I just lift at the point where the groove
darkens. I also turn in very early for both apexes, and as a result I
run very close to the grass bank and the barrier in each part. This
strategy is pretty quick but also means a lot of crashes.
160-165 is fine in racing. If you can keep it consistent you should find
that you finish quite high up in races as others try to take it faster
and come to grief. I've thrown away many a race here :-)
Look at some replays. It really helped me to understand where I was
losing time.

Yeah, the famous wolfie... I met him on VROC at the glen once, and now
the track record is a whooping 1:04 with HIS name on it... thanks WW

Yeah, it's discouraging to actually witness those guys pull a lap like that.
That being said, you do get excellent study material from saving the replay.

Damnit, you guys are making me feel slow again! But it's cause I actually am
slow there, I haven't raced at Spa but maybe 4 times. 3:58.21 in an Eagle.
I'm sure I can top that really easlily in a few minutes though. I need to
learn the track first, like I've done with the Ring. I can somewhat recognize
corners at the Ring now and it's dropped my lap times by over a minute!

I was in that race! Wolfi drove a Lotus, I drove a Honda. Of course he
was much faster then me, my fastest laptime was a 1.06.00. But if you
think that Wolfi waved goodbye at the start and was never seen again
until I was lapped, you're wrong.
He let me have the first position and then he passed me, on the
outside!, in the Loop. He let me through, and did the same thing
again, again, and again. Close racing, and fun! Of course he won, what
do you expect. But you've to consider the fact that the 1.04 lap was
inclusive passing and waiting for me!
