I race VROC (GPL) and have had a rash of blown motors in the intermediate
short races at Monza. I have the same problem while driving my Brabham or
Lotus.
In between the lesmos I rev the engine pretty high as I run those turns
in second gear.
How many of you just use third gear for the Lesmos?

Blown engines at Monza and favourite GPL tracks
A VROC racer asked how to avoid blowing engines through Monza's Lesmo corners. Answers covered short-shifting, using third gear and longer gearing. The thread then became a ranking of favourite GPL circuits, with the Nürburgring, Zandvoort and Rouen popular among the faster drivers and Mexico and Monaco widely disliked.

Hi Jeff
I do the Lesmos in second, accelerating to 120mph at least between them. You
just have to avoid over-revving that engine!! I used to blow a lot, but I
now shift up about 500 rpm below redline, and hardly ever blow up now,
except when over-e***d (e.g. chasing someone!). My lap times are as good
or better than before. Above Novice level the Cosworth is very fragile. I
don't know the Brabham.
Try making your second gear a bit taller.
hope this helps

I lengthened 2nd to the point where I am at about max revs just before

I for one always use 2nd gear between the Lesmos and I must say I can't
recall having engine worries at Monza in ages.
Last Sunday I even had the pleasure of winning the IGPLC Formula 1 race,
whilch lasted for about 1 hour (42 laps) using *Realistic* damage (GP-level)
The fact that I run a 10/30 Differiental might have son\mething to do with

I blow regularly at Monza and Spa in the Eagle. I take both Lesmos and

Unlike apparently everyone else here, I take both Lesmos in 3rd. Mind
you, my best at Monza in the Lotus is only 131.95. I just like to stay
on the track and in control, and I find that using 3rd keeps the arse
from sliding out so easily when you accelerate out of the turns. I also
regularly run intermediate short races without damaging the engine. My
2 cents worth.

Well I'm using 3rd gear in both Lesmos. My best is 1:27.37 so it isn't
actually very slow.
Maybe I could go faster after tweaking the gear ratios and taking the
Lesmos in second but Monza is such a boring track that I've never
bothered. :)

Well. If I go back to using 2nd through the Lesmos I'm gonna have to use a
taller second gear, when I hit the short straight between them it's on the
floor and at the redline. I accept that straight line speed at this point
might not be crucial, but when you've got AI swarming around you like a pack
of flies you want to get through there and still keep up the pace, and I can't
seem to keep my foot off the floor on that short straight. And sure enough
after a few laps of that the engine's coughing it's guts up. Exiting Lesmo 2
in 2nd is also an acquired skill, as you have to "apply" throttle at the
perfect rate, you can't just bang it on, otherwise you get that *** little
swerve which kills all the speed you wanted to pick up in the first place. As
for the elusive "late and fast entry" into Lesmo 1, I'm still completely in
the dark as to where and when to brake, either everyone sails by or I'm
locking up all four as I smoke it into the wall. God, it's great.

I'm falling asleep on those straights. It's the same with Spa. I
really don't like these tracks. Spa has some nice corners but there
are too many straights and they are just too long. :)

We agree again Gregor!! :-) Rouen has it's share of straights, but is
VERY challenging. And IMHO, Zandy is the most FUN track in GPL... the
Ring is my favorite, because of its complexity and just the fact that
Papy DID it... but Zandy is my favorite for fun!

You don't like Mosport? I really like those up & downhills. It's

then two slow corners and then full throttle uphill section and a
little jump at the braking point. Great! :)

No, I just find it really hard to stay on the track. My concentration on
just keeping the car pointing the right way takes away all the enjoyment

Yeah, it's hard at least until you find a good setup. I won the FGPLC
there, and it was fun. :)
Congratulations! I wonder when somebody will do a 1:17.xx. :)
Monaco moved to bottom of my list after last night's NTT race. My car
was just all over the place during the race and eventually I finished
second. It's the most demanding race because you just can't rest!
Acceleration, braking, turn-in and so on. And the car just doesn't
want to keep straight under acceleration. I just don't like the damn
place! :)
Hopefully tonight's race goes better.

Different strokes, I guess. I really enjoy Mosport and don't have much
trouble keeping it on the track - well, except for going into that last
sequence of turns after the long straight. It's pretty tough to hit
that rise, get on the brakes as your car is settling down, and make the
right hand turn.
Now, Monaco, that's another story.

My favourite track for online racing has to be Mosport. I haven't
driven some of the others online yet, but even in novice length races
so much happens that it's hard to even catch your breath. ;-) Also,
because of the difficult nature of the track it's very easy to put the
guy in front of you under pressure and force him into an error by
trying to go fast, and you have a good chance in the not-so-powerful
cars like the Coventry, too.

Yes Uwe, Mosport is a terrific track. As you indicate, it is EXTREMELY
unforgiving, maybe the most unforgiving in GPL. I think the Ring is
ultimately less forgiving, but at Mosport your opportunities to***up
seem more prevelent because you get around the place less than 1:30.
At Mosport, smoothness and restraint is your friend, like you say.
Unlike some other tracks, you really need to race the track first and
the other racers second.
Hope to see you there sometime Uwe! :-)

For me, Zandvoort is a low-traction rollercoaster. If I drive in granny mode,

Yeah, that slight lift just before turning / while turning in is very
important along with a good setup. As you said David, when you get it
right, it's just *awesome*. I don't get that feeling on other tracks,
except for Rouen in those first few corners and at Nrburgring. I
haven't tried the Brabham at Zandy yet. I'll have to try it with a
good setup and I'm sure it will be as fun as with the Lotus.
