Just got home from trackside at the Melbourne GP, and i thought i would
let those of you who want to know, who won the race.
After a re-start, due to the Stewarts self destructing (both of them)
on the grid, and Michael Schumacher having to go to the back of the
grid for the re-start, due to stalling it on the grid, the Melbourne GP
finally got under way.
The McLarens easily left the rest of the field in their wake, with
Eddie Irvine (ferrari) trying to play catch up in 3rd.
The pace car was brought out again after about 20 laps or so, when
Jacques Villeneuve parked his car against the fence, due to a rear wing
letting go at speed.
Shortly after both of the McLarens dropped out with mechanical woes,
leaving the race to Eddie Irvine in the Ferrari, followed home by
Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the Jordan, followed by Ralph Schumacher in
the Williams.
Incidentally Rubens Barrichello started from the pit lane in the spare
Stewart and mad a very good show of the rest of the race, showing that
the Stewarts were right on the pace this year.
Alex Zanardi creamed himself against the fence about mid race distance
when he got a wheel into the grass and lost it, bringing out the pace
car again. He was not hurt though.
The attrition rate was unbelievable, with only about 8 cars finishing,
Michael Schumacher limped home in last place, after a couple of
un-planned pit stops, due to a puncture firstly, and then a faulty
steering wheel secondly. He clocked the fastest lap of the race in
about the 2nd last lap of the day, so the Ferrari still looked ok after
all that.
This win was the 1st for Eddie, and didn't he seemed pleased about it.
The McLaren crew looked less than pleased... <G>

1999 Australian Grand Prix result and discussion
A spectator posted the result of the 1999 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, won by Eddie Irvine after both Stewarts failed on the grid and Michael Schumacher stalled. Posters argued over spoiler etiquette, Alex Zanardi's poor return to F1, how much overtaking there had been, and the poor TV direction.

Note, i did put the word, "spoiler", in the heading, that is all that
is needed.
I posted the article on the Melbourne GP because some people appreciate
knowing who come where...
I could understand your complaint if i didn't include the,"spoiler" ,
in the heading, but i did, so it is not my fault if you read it.
Did you get out of bed the wrong way or something. ? :-)
Cheers,
Ron
Yeah i agree with you there Mark, and thanks for giving the info to
Leong.
It would have been interesting to see how Damon would have went if he
hadn't of been punted off the track.
I class Damon Hill as a much better driver than Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
so i think it would have been a good battle with him and Eddie.
Like yourself, i was dissapointed in the showing that Alex put in.
I suppose we have to take into account that it was his first race back
in F1 for a few years though, and we all know what a fighter Alex is,
so i think he will improve over the coming season.
One thing you gotta hand to Alex is that he actually made Frank
Williams smile. How often have you seen that. ?? <G>
I wish the BAR team would stick to one color scheme, it certainly is
different like it is. I prefer the red/white side..
Cheers,
Ron

The GP in Oz was one of the strangest (but entertaining) I've seen. It
was great to see the new faces on the podium but, it is in no way
indicative of how the rest of the season will play out. Alex bleeds
black and white so I wouldn't give up on him just yet.

Geez, you just can't please some people.
At the risk (hell, certainty) of starting a tired debate...
8 cars finish, winner wins due to the fastest cars not surviving. How much
passing was done outside of that due to pitting and attrition? The usual
near-zip? Well, I bet Schumi's run from last (after stall) to about 10th made
for interesting watching. Otherwise, F1 is more about technology, politics,
personalities and (I suppose if one is really keen enough) watching very
precision drivers, than it is about watching exciting *racing*. I'm still
sometimes amazed at the popularity of this. This from someone who, yes,
watches the races (when available!).
Followups to alt.my.racing.is.better.than.yours ? :-)

I wouldn't call a faulty steering wheel a mistake. I do wonder how he
did manage to bent his front wing and get a flat tire, though. I did
see his 2 wheel on the grass trip, but I don't think that was the
reason of formentioned problems. Any clue?

If I recall correctly the puntee claimed he hadn't really touched Hill,
it was just a bad warp or clock-smash. Therefore Damon shouldn't be too
upset.

Schumaker was off-track, by a couple wheels or so, several times during
the race. I'd attribute it to frustration at starting on the tail matched
with overdriving the car to try to get back to the front...

That _is_ racing. Passing is just one facet of racing, and a series
artificially engineered to provide constant fan stimulus is as devoid
of true "racing" as any other.

>That _is_ racing.
I assume you are refering to the latter point, ie "precision drivers". I'd
agree, except...what percentage of fans do you think can discern a top tier
driver (except perhaps Schumacher) from a second tier, or a second tier from a
third (except perhaps Rossett :-)). I can't. And if I generalize and
externalize, well, surprise, that's what most do on the net :-)
*For the most part* people look at the times and say "good lap" or "good
driver". Just take a peek over at the F1 ng for such debates. Hey, everyone
can take from it what they want. To me, F1 seriously lacks in actual racing
action and interest. When a pit stop is the most exciting part... (yeah, I
can see you say "that's part of racing"). To each his own.
Anyway, if you want to watch precision, who needs the race? Just watch
practice (okay, I'm getting far afield here...).
But a course like Monaco or Hungaroring where you pretty much have to have the
car come apart to be passed??
Well, I think you can't expect a complete new team to win the first
race in their very first season in formula one.
Yeah, but I can't understand why they wouldn't use stronger rear
spoiler suspensions - most cars in fact are too _light_, so they have
to carry metal plates or something like that with them. And actually
Jacques was *very* lucky, this could've been a horrible accident.
BTW, Alex Wurz' rear wheel suspension broke at high speed, too.
Crashed in the first lap (IIRC after collision with a Prost).

Yeah, the tv coverage wasn't too hot at Melbourne. We didn't see Baricello going
for it either. The producer did a very bad job - I would have thought with all
those cameras, he would have had a bank of screens from which he could see all the
action and be able to switch from one to the other to get the good bits. Probably
Bernie wouldn't let them do that because they didn't pay him enough money. :-)

I disagree. Much courtesy was shown by including "spoiler" in the title of the

It's tough to compete at the very highest level without a works engine.
When they get teamed up with BMW next year, I suspect they will be right
up there again. The defection of Adrian Newey to McLaren hasn't helped
them either.
As much as I like Alex (he seems like such a nice guy), I think he is
going to have more than his hands full competing against young Ralph.
Ralph has really matured as a driver. He has been quite impressive since
about the middle of last season. His drive at Melbourne was rock solid.
