Considering 2nd 12MB Voodoo2...

Will a second Diamond Monster3D-2 12MB (SLI) increase my frame rate for GPL? Right now I've got everything turned on, and am running at 800x600. I'm seeing dramatic changes in frame rate at the start of a race and when there is lot's of traffic. I'd like to see close to 37fps all the time without having to sacrifice graphics. Thanks in advance for your assistance. BTW - I'm running a Dell P2-400 with 64MB 100Mhz RAM. David Cook

I don't know that adding another Voodoo2 via SLI will really give you a frame rate boost, but it should allow you to run higher resolutions with similar frame rates as the 800x600. Especially since you may need to lower the clock speed of the cards to run them in SLI mode. The cheap fix, is to use the glide wrapper patch and set the mirrors to refresh every other frame. Unless you drive exclusively by watching the mirrors, you shouldn't notice the mirror refresh rate too much. For those on the quest for high frame rates (and as much eye-candy as you can get) and have a 3DFX card, try using the glide wrapper authored by George Smiley <http://www.grandprix2.com/gpl/patches/glide2x.zip>. Try setting the mirror to refresh every other frame. I found that this works quite well (updates are often enough for safe defensive driving) and allowed me to turn on more eye-candy at higher resolutions and still maintain a fairly steady 36 fps. However, at some tracks I must turn off the track and objects in the mirrors if everything else is turned on. I am running a stock PII-300 and basically use the 640x480 resolution in GPL. -- **************************** Michael E. I have a P2400 and 2 Voodoo2 12megs. I generally run with car & track only in the mirrors, and all other options on with 3/4 detail level set. I can peg it at 36fps in 800x600. In 1024x768 I only get 36 in chase view, it drops about 5 to 10fps in in-car view.
Thanks, I guess the max is 36fps, not 37... I'll check out that wrapper and adjust my mirrors per your suggestion. Apreciate your feedback. David Cook

I put a 2nd 12 meg CL card in (K6 400 64mb) and - get this - lost a few fps. All other software benefitted but GPL didn't. I haven't ruled out a problem with my system but given the failry simple graphics that GPL has I don't see it being a problem for 1 card to max it out. Maybe the second card slows down the bus or something but it certainly doesn't make sense. Switching resolution doen't make any difference either. Going from 640 to 1024 doesn't cause a single frame to drop. The processor is all important with GPL. Dean

Uh, we already have that. viper 550 & ATI Rage Fury :) I think it's a _lot_ wiser to keep the AGP card 2D & Directx (Whether RivaTNT or Rage Fury) and have the VooDoo II or whatever in a PCI slot. That way, you have 100% coverage for anything that might come along. -Larry > i will wait for Voodoo3 (2D + 3Dfx + AGP + TVOut) sounds good

I'll lay my money on that kind soul being Michael Carver! :)) One of many kind souls on this NG. No it isn't! I keep hearing people claiming that the maximum frame rate in Grand Prix Legends is 36fps, but if I switch most details right down I get 37fps! Adam

Hi Don, >I see 37 pretty regular. Well, you could see 37 in the framecounter, but hey, it is wrong! :-) On a serious note however, since the replayfile is recorded at 36 fps, I doubt that the game-engine can support more. Remco

How can you tell which is right and which is wrong though, concidering that it's such a small detail, it's not like if it were 10fps, where you would be able to tell just by looking at it...

Hi Adam, Like I said, the replay file is captured in frames every 1/36 of a second. This is for me a clue that the game engine doesn't support a framerate more then 36 fps. When I used the word "wrong" I meant to say that the framecounter doesn't show the right FPS, and not that you're wrong. Of course I can't see the difference between 36 and 37 fps, you silly you!
