While the sounds are great, I have one complaint with them. The loops
are too long. My GPL seems to hiccup while it loads the long wav files.
The default sound waves for GPL run in the 70 to 80 kb range not 211 kb.
But, I guess it's okay once they are loaded. Maybe GPL hiccups because I
only have 64meg of memory?

Patrick Daly's new GPL engine sound pack
Players praised Patrick Daly's replacement engine sounds for GPL, saying they transformed the game and tempted them to drive other cars. Some questioned whether the long sound loops caused pauses on PCs with less memory, but most reported no problems. Daly explained his looping method, and others suggested sourcing sounds from the film 'Grand Prix' and a 1967 LP of in-car recordings.
Automated summary.
Agreed. What a difference.
It was a tough choice between the Ferrari sounds. Patrick's had more base,
but I kept the original just 'cause it was the first sound I heard when I
bought the game. The BRM sounds were fairly similiar to my untrained ear,
both very cool, but the new sound was a tad too loud at the top end. The
Honda is incredible, no longer the boring "sounds like everything else" car
that it was, but the Cooper is the reason behind this post. I absolutely
love it. I sat in the pit without touching the gas just to hear the thing
idle. And just as a warning, make sure to move any large metal objects (ie.
filing cabinets) out of the computer room before firing up the cooper and
cranking the volume. Even my little 15w subwoofer had the cabinets
resonating between 8500 and 9000rpm. Great Job! Thanks much.

There is a whining noise to the cooper sound, but it is also in the
weslake.wav file. It is just more pronounced at higher rpm's. It could
also depend on your speakers.

Upon advice from ALison... AND THEY ARE TOTATLLY AWESOME!!!!
They change all the car sounds (or just a few if you want)... and they
totally change the game!!!!
The V12's actually sound live resignating (is that how you spell?>?)
beastS!!!!
Not off cut Nascar V8's :-)
Go and get them NOW!!!! you won't regret it...
BUT.. I think the Ferrari and H16 sounds can be kept... The orignal /
defaults are pretty good and the new ones aren't quite as good... but
I'm sure Patrick will fix this.... :-)
Get them now....

There is probably some room for me to shorten the loops a bit. The main
reason they are long is down to my method for creating a seamless loop. I
reverse the sound and paste it back-to-back with the original. That tends
to lengthen the overall loop a bit. A side benefit of the longer loop is
that it tends to minimize oscillation effects that sometime appear with
shorter loops at high revs.
Another way of decreasing the file size would be to convert to 8-bit rather
than 16-bit (4 of 5 GPL originals are 16bit, one is 8-bit for some reason).
There would be a decrease in sound quality but it might not be that
noticeable.
I didn't observe any performance impact whatsoever when I put the new sounds
on my system. That said I have a pretty high spec rig running at 450Mhz,
128Meg RAM. I would be very interested in any more feedback if people think
BTW, I'm planning to put a tutorial up on my site since so many people seem
to be interested in making good sound loops.

Patrick

Work fine here too, 128MB, excellent work by the way :)

PS The "feel and sense" of GPL got even better with these real sounds!
Patrick, your sounds are working great for me on a Celeron300a/450 with
128megs RAM, noticed no problems at all.
Just wanted to thank you for the amazing Eagle engine sound, terrific
how in the high rev range you can almost hear a chassis vibration
resonance in a way that I could imagine a real 1967 Westlake would
cause the chassis to vibrate at maximum revs...
If you decide to try out 8bit samples please continue to make the
16bit samples available to those of us that want to hear that high
quality music of cylinders and exhaust.
Great job and thanks!
Seeyas on the track.

Hi Patrick,
Darn, why did you make this Honda sound so good? Now I HAVE to drive
the Honda. And that whale is hard to drive. Well, it is for me.
Thank you for these sounds.
Remco
Hi Remco,
I know what you mean about the Repco Remco. I prefer driving the Cooper and
Eagle so I found myself using the Repco sound for them as well. Works great
with them, only problem is that it takes away from the experience of hearing
the chorus of different engines during replays.
I was happily surprised at how good the loops sound in replay using TV1/TV2
view. The sound of the Repco throttle blipping on downshift is really
amazing. The fact that you can drop in a real engine sample and get it to
sound so good over the range of idle, full acceleration, throttle lift,
throttle blip-downshift is a reflection of what a great job Papyrus have
done coding for sounds.
I have loops of similar quality for Modern F1 cars. Try dropping them in
Ubisoft's F1RS/MGP and they sound like shit in comparison.
best regards,
Patrick

"Sounds" like you have a hit on your hands! But I'm really puzzled. I have a
Compaq 5660 PII-450 with A3D sound support on the motherboard and my
original GPL sounds are superb. I was very anxious to try your new sound
set! When I dropped in your Ferrari sound, it was, well..., horrible. It
reminded me of the sound of those wind-up *** band-powered airplanes that
I used to play with as a boy. It wasn't a matter of taste, this was a sound
that *no one* could enjoy. Any ideas on hardware/software issues that might
make my experience so different than *everyone* else's?
Keep up the great work. Hope that I can enjoy it soon, like everyone else
obviously is!

Jack

First off, excellent sampling, Patrick! I've got the CD myself, and have
managed to sample some, but not half as good :-)
There was one problem for me, however, if all sounds are not 16-bit
Mono. The game/Windows crashes, gives me a blue screen complaining about
an error in Dsound.vxd. Then I had to reboot. I verified this by first
only using the original repco-sound, then adding sounds one at the time.
As soon as I added something not 16- or 8-bit Mono, it crashed (even in
rpy's). This could be my puter, though...
What I would like to see, is a "genuine" patch. I have the Grand Prix
Movie soundtrack, and there's lots of in-car sound, I also have a few
BBC live radio broadcasts taped.
I've speeded up the Ferrari Sound, because it didn't sound like 9.ooo
RPM in the Honda, and now it is perfect!
The BRM V-16 sample is amazing too, evrybody should buy this book to
hear the full CD..!
Looking fwd to more great work, Patrick!

what does detail bias do exactly.

Yeah, those sounds are just awesome, they made me drive the other cars

The Coventry is actually the Cooper. I guess Papyrus couldn't get the
license for using the name. The same goes for the Murasama, that's
actually the Honda.
To the left, less detail is seen. To the right, there is more detail.
Example: When you set the slider full left, in an outside view the
head of a driver is like a marble. Do you set the slider full right,
you can see that the driver didn't shave himself in the morning.
Ok, slightly exaggarated, but then you see a drivers head, including
goggles and a face.

Hi Matthew,

know how we are getting on with it.

I am really enjoying your sounds patrick and look foward to more from
you.Is it possible to also make a new tire skid sound.I have made a
new one from a tire sound that I found at a Warbirds site and gave it
more bass.It gives a much better feel of *** stretching on concrete
then the tinny screech that ships with GPL.I would love to hear what
