Sim Racing Frustration :-((((((

I've been doing the sim racing thing for quite a while, and GPL may be a wonderful sim and all but I just can't get very interested in it. I think the time period is my biggest problem. I couldn't care less about driving a '67 F1 car. The thought that most often crosses my mind while driving this thing is "Weren't the drivers idiots (stupid, crazy, insane) for even getting in these heaps?" No wonder half of them died behind the wheel. The tracks suck. Well, not all of them. I mean Mosport is definately awesome, and the Nurburgring is insane much like the drivers. But I'll take the current Spa, Monza, and Silverstone configurations any day over this crap. I could literally fall asleep at Spa and Monza, and Silverstone has only one real interesting section the rest of it is pretty much shift up to 5th, brake, shift down to 2nd, and turn right. Racing Online sucks. Well, not always, but most of the time. In the open races you get to race at your choice of Spa, Monza, Silverstone, or another track that sucks not mentioned above, Watkins Glen, in a ten lap sprint where the winner is the guy that survived turn one because every race field has at least one idiot in it that's hell bent to go from worst to first right out of the gate. Hey idiot! You most probably qualified where you are for a reason so stay there for a lap or two! Racing Offline sucks. You get the pleasure of John Surtees pretending he's the same online idiot that I described above. Maybe I've been doing this too long :-(((((

Todd... We're racing on VROC at Zandy (a track you didn't mention) tonight. It's a 27-lap Int Long event (no sprint race here). Last night's pole-sitter was dead last coming out of the first turn. He wound up finishing 2nd. The winner, who qualified 6th, finished with a fat margin of victory, through a steady, consistent effort. My point: There was a lot of jockeying for position and, coupled with the challenging Zandvoort course, the race was anything but boring! Come join us tonight! I can assure you that you'll have no opportunities to "fall asleep" at the wheel. Results are posted here daily. See you there!

Oops, sorry... Practice: 10:30pm EST Race: 11:00pm EST Thanks.
For me, the period is totally irrelevant. What I want is an involving, "realistic" drive, and I'll take that in any form it comes. I can't wait for N3 even though the only Nascar racing I've ever seen has been on my PC (ok, apart from brief clips here and there on UK TV). GPL's the first "real" sim IMO. Hopefully there'll be many more formats in the future as developers catch up with what PCs (not just 3d cards!) are now capable of. I used to hate Mosport. After learning to love Zandvoort I took another look at Mosport and now it's superb to race on. The Ring and Monaco are the only two tracks I still actively dislike racing on. Sorry, not true :-) Wide track, plenty of 4-wheel drift opportunities (if I manage to get it right for once!) Once I'd found a good ISP, learned only to avoid servers over 300 latency (and to quit from any that show any instability), connections have been pretty solid for me. Of course, other racers are a different matter entirely :-) However I've made my share of 1st turn mistakes so I can't really throw stones. I try hard to avoid pile ups and that's all I expect of anyone else. I mean, it happens in F1 all the time (ish) and they've got real lives and expensive machines to worry about! It's nowhere near as exciting as online, but it's still better than any offline racing I've experienced before. There are some rather enthusiastic AI drivers, but learning to cope with them helps you to cope with online dangers. Take a couple of weeks away from it. Try GPL again after that and if you hate it, delete it from your HD. Life, as they say, is too short. But every time I've had a rest from GPL I come back and realise what I've been missing :-) Andrew McP

No wonder half of them died behind the wheel. I hope this thought has passed through all our brains, or you and I are some really odd humans ;o). Still driving the Eagle, Todd :o)? The Ferrari is the only car of them which can keep me awake. It's the sound that does it. Go for one of Eric Cote's (Ferraris only) or Jean Claude's (Ferraris only and Coventrys only) leagues, Todd. Great drivers. I run my first race in Eric's last weekend at Monaco. I won, btw :o). No first corner pile up, the backmarkers let me by just fine. There was one who wouldn't let me by in practice, but that's all. Try the non-Lotus races at VROC. I have great experience of those races. Perhaps cause most beginners want to drive the fastest car, thus choosing the Lotus. Await GP3 :o))). I downloaded the demo... NOT, but some sound files of a modern F1 Ferrari and sure the sound from -67 revving to 10000 rpm is great, but revving to 15000+ rpm is almost unbelievable. Not to mention the downshifting. Recently I did some laps in GP2 and I must say that even almost three years after the release of GP2 the sound is very good and I have high espectations for GP3 :o). The internet play should be better than in GPL. I'm looking forward to outbrake you, Todd :o). I totally agree with you, Todd. The offline racing in GPL is not a very pleasant experience. The AI not having cold tires from the start, braking in to you and doing several odd things. It's as if they dont know (Papy forgot to program it) that if they are close to me doing 300+ kph they have to brake at least one car length earlier than normal to not brake straight in to me. I once raced the AI at Monza and after a couple of laps I was third on the start/finish straight and trying to slip stream the second when he suddenly lets off his gas resulting in me going straight in to him. I watched the replay and apparently the driver in first place catches a back marker and instead of going around him (there were a lot of room, a lot), he slows down, and then the second driver slows down and then I dont :o). That insident was the final blow for me to never again race the AI in GPL. I've driven the gp2 AI for hundreds of hours and never seen such odd behaviour. My advice to Papyrus is to keep it simple and take one step at the time. No, I dont think so, Todd. The first years of internet racing will be very frustrating, because of we (the humans) being lousy to implement it. The offline racing could of been really great in GPL if the AI drove the same cars as we have too and was implemented as "simple" as in GP2. Look forward to GP3, Sports Car GT and Trans Am Racing, Todd... please do that. I want to race you many more times before we lay six feet under :o). /Christer -- http://home.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online racing"-proposal under "For developers". No, I quit the Eagle. The last car I was driving was the Murasama (Honda). But I'm going through another burned out phase. Started tinkering with MGPRS2 the last couple of days. I think I'm done with GPL unfortunately. I just have never been able to get into it. :-(((( Oh, I'm sure we'll race many more times. Maybe I'll even be as fast as you someday. Geez, I must have been cranky when I posted this. :-)))))
