OT: 10 year old Kart drivers

9 posts by 7 people · 20 Feb 1999 - 23 Feb 1999

Not sure what channel it was on today but I happened to catch some 10-11 year olds racing Karts in a Pygnosis sponsored race. These kids ROCKED. It's no wonder competition is so great in multiplayer racing sims. I always assumed that the kids were the ones causing the problems. Based on what I saw today, some of us would get "schooled" by these boys ;) David Cook

My eight-year-old son is a kart racer. At the Londonderry, NH 1/4 mile oval track--which has 24 degree banking in the turns, seven degrees on the straights--I removed the purple restrictor plate from his blue printed Briggs & Stratton 5Hp and let him "go for it." The flagman stand has a radar gun mounted on it and he hit a top speed of 77 mph on the main straight. Being that the frame sits about three inches off the ground he found out what is meant by, "What a rush." My young racer and I also saw the racing in question from England on Speedvision this past week. Made us really hungry for our second season to start. The engines have been rebuilt, the frame is being sandblasted getting ready for a new coat of paint, and the body panels are getting painted and 1999 sponsor decals. Most PC racers would be shocked at how good the kids I see are at racing their karts. All would be shocked at how good my son gets around Watkins Glen and Monza in GPL. There is not even a shadow of doubt in my mind how much the four years he spent on Papyrus sim games prepared him for real racing. I have talked to other parents about this, and to a man they have all said that racing NASCAR Racing and NASCAR Racing 2 has been an invaluable training tool for the boys and girls. My wife use to get pissed off at the amount of time he spent on the PC with his ECCI unit, but it made him a race driver. After all the Air Force puts pilots through hundreds of hours of simulator time before they get in a trainer. FYI - The Los Angeles Region of SCCA has had a class in Solo II (AutoX) for go karts for quite awhile now. It gives a chance for the whole family to now get involved. If anyone is interested in going to a SOLO II, drop on by to: www.solo2.com We have an event at Hollywood Park Sunday (Feb 21). > My eight-year-old son is a kart racer. The SCCA has had this program for two years. It inculdes a 125cc Shifter Kart class for ***s and a 5hp briggs or 100cc clutch class for kids. Addtionally Bryon Short has been running an arrive and drive 125cc shifter Kart program at SCCA National Solo lls. This inculdes a class on driving a Kart and all the nessacary safety gear. The only bummer with this class is that Top Time of Day has just been put out of reach of guys like me who drive production based cars. Even with 170 hp and 1700 lbs my Corolla just can't keep up with a Kart even on a very open course. The shifter Karts are amazingly tough to drive tho. You feel like you are shifting constantly and man the wheel spin seems almost constant too. Dave

Substitute "Ferrari" for "Karts" where appropriate! <g>

No it makes driving Grand Prix Legens seem easy. I ran a shcool which we ran on a standard Solo ll Course with 15' lanes. The first time I came out of a corner and drilled throttle I could not even keep Kart from clobbering cones. And when you do this they end up hitting you too. The Ferrari in GPL does not have near the wheel spin this Kart had with cold tires. Dave

Well, then in your case Graeme, wouldn't that be "Karts" for "Ferrari"? If this is a subtle announcement of your retirement from GPL, we'll miss you, but not your margins of victory! <g> 1:24.48 at Zandvoort in the Ferrari! Makes the rest of us just feel like kids. Oops, sorry! <G>
