Car view and driving success

9 posts by 6 people · 12 Feb 1999 - 16 Feb 1999

Personally won't buy any driving game without a***pit view! BUT there's a VERY important time for "chase-copter" view: heavy traffic. N99 is bad about being in heavy traffic forever and not being able to see around me. Much as I hate to use the view, it's the only way to see when I TRULY clear another truck (I can tell when I'm about to hit someone when the spotter says "you're alright"). It also helps (ME) on road coarses as I learn the track... "Gunner" ORSA Bronze #78 Navy Dodge truck

Oh my gosh! One of the more vocal GPL opponents has seen the light! Welcome aboard my friend! We've save a place for you here in the compound.

What a refreshingly honest report. It's ***ing isn't it! And, hey, it probably took me 30 days to get to 1:08 at The Glen, so you're doing well. But for anyone, the point is: just do as well as you can do. The neat thing about GPL is that you just can't do that without contemplation, concentration, and control. It's sort of "the thinking man's sim"...not unlike the real thing! Welcome again. And that check you spoke of...it's in the mail. <g>

The real key to GPL, is the same key to real racing. Smoothness... Work on being smooth and consistent first and speed will eventually come. I think way too many folks try for speed first and find themselves furstrated. I remember when I could only do the rare 1:10 at the Glen. I saw the best times of 1:07 & 1:06 and I felt, "no way, I'll never manage that". But instead of trying to go faster I started to work on driving smoothly and then the consistent 1:07's came. Worked harder on being smooth, and I was dipping in the 1:06's on occasion. Now I can make the occasional 1:05's (and no this isn't on a Lotus, but an Eagle). Of course now there are hot shots out there hitting the 1:04's, just like in racing, there will always be someone faster. One thought on the hotshot flyers in GPL. How many of these drivers could sustain these speeds for the full length of a Grand Prix event? Generally speaking, achieving so fast times will abuse and overheat the tires. Over the course of a long or full length race the tires would eventually be too hot to grip anymore. Plus, I don't think GPL models tire wear. At such high temperatures, I am sure those tires would eventually go away. -- **************************** Michael E. . Plus, I don't think GPL models Try running the BRM really fast for a while. I have doen some 1:29s at monza but it seems that faster 6 laps the rear tires are so hot the rear gets really greasy, makind late braking a thing of the past. -- David Robinson Egan's Law The Pace car will always go 2 MPH slower then your race car idles in first gear.

I usually do my fastest lap on lap five of a practice session, even when I have enough fuel for other 5 laps. I have been thinking it was me losing the power of concentration, but your post makes me think that maybe it's not. Cheers, Paul

Well the Lotus, Brabham, Eagle, and Ferrari are fine for at least 21 laps in a race if pushed hard. I just noticed when lapping in BRM with its big heavy motor that it heats tires. It is really bad at Zandvoort where to get into the low 1:28s you really had to throw the car around, it can run only about 7 laps till it gets really loose in rear with the setup I am running. > I usually do my fastest lap on lap five of a practice session, even when I > have enough fuel for other 5 laps. I find the Brabham at Zandvoort especially loses a lot of grip if pushed hard for 5 laps or so midrace. I have to back off for a few laps to get back to normal. Very frustrating in a battle for position, but ultimately satisfying as a simulation. Ben

Right, GPL models tire temps and grip well, but not tire wear. I would assume, that the hotter the tire, the more *** will be left on the tarmac. I know that the tires in those days were long lasting, but I doubt they could handle the fast lap abuses for the full duration of a Grand Prix event. Since most of the VROC events are only "sprint" versions, one can really get by abusing the car for 10-17 laps. -- **************************** Michael E.
