Anybody using the EyeScream 3D Glasses

Experiences with Wicked3D EyeScream 3D shutter glasses

Users of Metabyte/Wicked3D's EyeScream shutter glasses, which needed a Voodoo2 card, compared the 3D effect in racing games. One owner called GPL a whole new game with the correct stereo.cfg file, while another saw little benefit; tips covered wearing them over glasses, frame-rate impact, ghosting and transparent cockpit glitches.

Just got a pair of Wicked3D''s EyeScream 3D Glasses and they are really cool with games like Dethkarz and GPL. Was wondering if anybody else is using them and with what racing titles.

Well, I went and check out there site http://www.wicked3d.com/eyescream.htm ), and it seems that you can order them directly through there ... ~$129.00 (+shipping). It would seem that you need a VooDoo2 card (or compatible, I guess) ... which, of course, they also sell. I didn't see anything about a package deal though. TB

My personal observations are that the glasses have never given me an advantage in games. I still stink in GPL..... :^) The effect is great, I agree, but for me, driving sims just don't seem to lend themselves well to the glasses - GPL looks pretty much the same, Motoracer 2 is the same story. Viper Racing is a little buggy with the glasses (I wish it used glide since the Metabyte glide wrapper seem to work best). Surprisingly MS Cart Precision Racing works quite well and the stereo effect seems to "pull" me into the game more (it's still CPR though :^) ). Monster Truck Madness 2 works also (the 2D***pit is best turned off) except the trucks don't look real - they look like little toys bouncing around "inside" the monitor. Do You get different results? What really blows me away, is how amazing Janes World War 2 Fighters looks in stereo. The 3d scalable***pit "feels" real. Also, Janes F-15 looks great too but the F-15 2D***pit looks like a flat piece of paper and causes frame rate problems. Padlock on F-15 is smooth enough though.

These are just 3D shutter glasses and GPL is a WHOLE NEW GAME. Cars and track objects pop out of the screen. The driver arms extend out of the monitor and the wheel appears to be a good 4 inches off the dash. When you pass cars they move off the surface of the screen and past your peripheral vision. It's hot! full review is over at www.mpog.com

I've used them with DethKarz - awesome Powerslide - good GPL - indescribable F1RS - good NFS3 - excellent POD - good and fun for the game that it is those rankings are for the 3D effects and not the game itself. yes I'm using with a pair of Monster 2 Voodoo 2 cards in SLI mode. 800x600 is acceptable but 1024x786 is incredible and with the RE2Flex drivers you can overdrive your single Voodoo2 card to 1024x672 and your SLI combo up to 1024x1024 in software only with no overheating or anything - it works and its amazing. Even more amazing is that it works with ANY Voodoo2 card - not just theirs.

Make sure you are using the proper STEREO.CFG file for Grand Prix Legends. You say you didn't see any major difference and to me that is one of the biggest games to actually show a difference. Driving Monaco is actually like being there. Plus you can see every detail of the other cars poking out of the screen and the track extends a good 20-30" beyond the surface of your monitor.
Mark Smi 09 Feb 1999#449291
to buy go to www.wicked3D.com for more info and my review go to www.mpog.com For $129 - even as a novelty item they are worth the money. There is support for over 200 games and they work with any existing Voodoo2 card you may already have. Plus they are wireless and reasonably comfortable. You wear these glasses, use a FF wheel and sit in a Thunderseat and YOU WILL BE RACING! The only thing left is a big fan behind your monitor to blow in your face and some "burning tire" incense. >> OK, You have our attention. What these things and where can we pick >>them up?

They fit over regular glasses but then they stick out just far enough that the frames become a visible distraction (ever see the Steve Martin movie - The Jerk) You have to force yourself to ignore them. I had much better results once I put my contacts in although the 3D games tends to make you forget to blink so they dry out fast.

Does it slow down fps in the games? And how long can u wear them b4 u get headaches etc.? And how much and where can u get them in the UK? -- Vince Fisher
Mark Smi 11 Feb 1999#449669
It doesn't touch your FPS because it isn't using your CPU - it is only intercepting a signal from your video card and splitting it between each of your eyes. I've worn for 3 hours and not even had the slightest twinge of a headache. Go to www.wicked3d.com to find out where you can buy them Internationally. You can always order direct from Metabyte.

Yup, I agree, the proper stereo.cfg file must be used. You got my curiosity though - I'll give Monaco a try. Have you tried editing the file? I found the ZPD value can range from 2000 to 40000 in different config files. By putting in some extreme numbers you get some interesting results. I emailed Metabyte, asking for some better documentation on the config files and the answer I got was a polite "sorry, we can't provide that info...." Do you know any FAQs on the web that might provide some insight into editing these files?

They work surprisingly well over my glasses. They don't weigh much and they fit snug enough that they stay where you put 'em.

Regarding FPS: There's two answers to that. If I don't use Metabyte's resolution enhancement feature (RE2Flex) then I find no effect on FPS. If I do use RE2Flex then I do notice a difference. I can easily accept the FPS drop since it's not that much and what I get in return is a nice crisp display. Sorry, I'm not offering an objective answer.

I can't find any support for this product other than Metabyte's site. One thing I did do under the HOTKEY config is setup the separation hotkeys so I can hit CTRL-A and CTRL-Z to increase or decrease vertical separation until I get the desired effects. I had to do this on Half-Life to get rid of some "ghosting" problems. The GPL Stereo.cfg file worked right out of the zip file even though the readme says it was for the Demo only.
Ken Morano 11 Feb 1999#449674
Since you mentioned it, I emailed Metabyte about the ghosting in Janes WW2 Fighters. They recommended I turn up the gamma (in the game). I was skeptical but it DID improve the ghosting. And yeah, the hot keys have come in handy for me with Direct3D games. I set up hot keys for RE2Flex toggle, Stereo toggle, and Reset. At least on my system, D3D is flakey so I have to give it a "shot in the arm" by using the keys to "wake it up" so that it synchs right. Hey, if you find any Docs on the config files maybe you can post a notice in this newsgroup - I'll do the same. I think these glasses are becoming real popular all of a sudden so it shouldn't be "off topic".

In GPL part of the***pit is transparent on my system. Do you have that, too? Strange thing is, on Metabyte's site I read something about Stereo.cfg files are not needed anymore, but still the drivers ask for them...? l8er ronny -- Your mouse has moved. I have transparent***pit and tire sidewalls the first time into the game. The quick fix is to return to the pits and back to the***pit view and the areas will become solid black. There is something screwy with the initial load and the black being seen as transparent. Simply resetting the 3D mode will fix it and returning to the pit screen is the easiest way to reset the 3D.
