Sub-1:29 Monza lap in GPL Eagle and setup controversy

A driver celebrated his first sub-1:29 Monza lap in the Eagle using Alison Hine's setup, but it emerged the setup had bump rubbers below the patched minimum and had been meant only for beta testers. Alison asked that it not be circulated and he stopped using it; others advised learning the track before tweaking setups and shared their own setups.

Whoopee, I've just gone sub-1:29.00 in my Eagle (1:28.93) for the first time. I'm so happy I just have to share this. Alright, I know the fast guys are doing 1:27s but it is a small personal landmark! :-) Cheers, Paul

Hey - a lot of us are happy to complete a lap... Just practice? Or did you find "the setup"? Well done anyhow Tony >Whoopee, I've just gone sub-1:29.00 in my Eagle (1:28.93) for the first >time. Done in race practice using Alison Hine's Eagle setup with 2 clutches rather than 3. Cheers, Paul

Well done Paul, I presume this was at Monza? I had a timed 1m26.... saved the replay, checked it later.... could not believe I had shaved 3/4 secs of my normal lap times! I timed the replay with a stop watch.... yup, you guessed.... it came out as a 1m.29+ I must of had a mega time warp :( Oh well! I am sure your time is correct, again... well done.Dave Hawnt (UK)
Could you just email your setup. I'm new in GPL, just racing for 2 weeks, after 3 years of GP2. I'm now in the 1.32.XX at Monza with my own made setup. (No-Help) I only find the gear setting a bit difficult, cause you can't read the RPM exactly in the cocpit. (no-redline or max torque) Thanks in Advance Johan Clermonts Napalm Racing Team Holland

Wait a second, I just checked Alison's site and didn't see any setups for the Eagle. Did I miss something? I thought Alison said she was going to do Brabham setups first. If Alison has released Eagle setups, my prayers have been answered. Regardless, conrats on the lap. -- Bill Mette | "A person is smart. People are dumb." MCSNet, Chicago | - K MiB
Maybe he was talking about Monaco, I remember downloading a zip file a while ago of Monaco only setups that had in it an Alison Eagle setup for Monaco. Check http://www.nh.ultranet.com/~alison/gpl/files/setups_monaco.zip I think that was where I got it, but be careful since most of those were setups developed using the beta GPL and so have shock bumpers of .5" which became illegal in the release version which had a minimum of 1.0" so if you run without modifying them up to 1.0" you might get flak by some people if they see your setup is relying on the beta settings. There are many good Eagle drivers out there, and many of us are sharing setup ideas and even setups with other Eagle drivers (though probably not as good as the great setups Alison seems to have a great ablility to come up with, hopefully one day we will also have an Alison Eagle setup pack). If you see an Eagle driver that impresses you, try asking if they will share setups or ideas with you, odds are that they will. Forza Eagle! Seeyas on the track. --John (Joao) Silva an Eagle only driver since GPL release and plan to stay that way until end of March (finish of IGPLC season).

No, it was Monza. I got Eagle setups for all the tracks from Alison's Eagle Woman site just before Christmas but it looks like she has taken them off now. Don't know why - they seem pretty good to me - but maybe she is not happy with them and wants to revamp them later. I'm happy to mail them to you. Cheers, Paul

Wow, maybe Alison is working on an Eagle super setup pack, that would indeed be nice :-) Maybe we can setup some website or something for Eagle setups, seems like there are plenty of Ferrari and Lotus setups around but the Eagle is much more of a rarity in finding setups. Hi John, Now that is an idea that interests me. I have stacks of unused web space. Mail me and maybe we can work something out, Cheers, Paul

I now discover that the Eagle setups were for the benefit of the beta team only and should never have come into my hands. Alison has requested that I do not release them to anyone else, as she considers their use to be cheating, a sentiment that I agree with. I shall no longer be using them, sadly this means that all my Monza Eagle times are invalid and it's back to square one. But I am not down-hearted - oh no! - and I expect to be back into the 1:28s again very shortly! Some advice from Alison for a quick fix Eagle setup is to take her Coventry setup and copy the extension from .co1 to .ea1 and then change the gear ratios since the Eagle has a slightly higher redline, but this may not be necessary since it also has more power. Cheers, Paul

I think most drivers jump into car setup too soon. First learn the track. I have been driving Monza with the default Eagle setup and mininum fuel and can manage low 29's during the race. By "perfecting" (sort of) lines you can get down to competitive times without having to monkey with the car. After you understand the track, each change you make to the setup will be more useful and give more meaningful feedback. J.

I gave up GPL for about 2 months because it was just too hard and frustrating. Because I had bought the game, I came back and checked VROC. Alison Hine had posted a set of "user friendly" Coventry setups. I tried them and immediately I could get around many tracks without disturbing too much gravel and grass. Most people have no clue what setup changes should be made until they have learned a track. A chicken / egg situation. But if you find a forgiving setup then you can start learning the tracks. Novices like me will get the benefit of Alison's setup - but as you say, there is no point in experimenting beyond this too early. Tony

BINGO!! I'm still having problems running Monza under 1:34. However, with the defult setup for the GLEN, I run an *unconstant* 1:08 laps. (1:08.x, 1:09.x, 1:07.x, 1:09.x, ect) After running a few hundred laps I was able to run *semi-constant* laps of 1:08.x (1:08.9, 1:08.7, 1:08.7, 1:08.7, 1:08.6, 1:08.5. After some time with that setup I decided to adjust just one item in the setup. I not only felt (big time) what difference it made but I was also able to increas that lap time to 1:07. then I adjusted the same thing just one incroment again and jumped to a lot of laps of 1:07.1xx. Now, After understanding what each item does to the car, And knowing the track, I run *constant* 1:06.12xs with a full tank of fuel. and that drops down to a *constant* 1:05.4xx by lap 40.

<snip> Actually, this works for the Lotus and the Brabham as well. I haven't tried it on the other cars. I renamed Alison's Coventry setup for Watkins Glen with a bb1 extension (ie Brabham) - and within 5 laps I am only 0.5 secs short of my Lotus time. I'm only managing 106.5 in the Lotus - but I feel I'm actually going to find it easier to get the Brabham's laptimes down. Just as with the Lotus, at first I had found the Brabham extremely difficult, and (in the Brabham's case) very slow. And I found braking hard, or accelerating quickly, virtually impossible. But within 4 or 5 laps of using the coverted "Hine Special" setup, I found the Brabham much much more drivable. I now hope to get competitive quickly with the Brabham, so I can enter those "No Lotus" races :) About a month ago I had the exact same experience with the Lotus: that is, at first I found it very twitchy, hard to control, and prone to spinning seemingly at random. This was, of course, mainly due to my lack of skill and familiarity. But once I converted Alison's Coventry setups to have LO1 extensions, suddenly I found the Lotus not only the quickest car, but also the most stable and easiest to be consistent in. So for anyone who is still struggling with GPL after a few weeks practice (as I was), it's really worth a try. For me, anyway, it has made GPL immeasurably more enjoyable, because I am now competitive online - not with the really quick guys, but there's usually someone about my pace, and sometimes there's no-one quicker. (not that often i have to admit ;) And a huge thank you to Alison Hine - IMHO the ultimate setup goddess. <g> Cheers Alan Hughes

Yes, Al, Alison does a great job. But if you want good Brab setups (IMHO), check mine out at the site below... -Dave -- Dave Schwabe The Aussie Toad -- Grand Prix Legends & Brabham site http://users.wi.net/~schwabe

On the Ferrari too - I've recently been using Ian Lake's chassis settings on my red car. With some modified gear ratios I've improved my Ferrari laptimes a lot, going from 1m29.3 to 1m27.5 at Silverstone, 1m28.7 to 1m28.2 at Monza, 3m19.9 to 3m18.5 at Spa, and 1m05.6 to 1m04.6 at Watkins Glen. Jeff, Though I am a rookie I think yours is excellent advice. I was really working on my Eagle setups for the longest time - obsessively - until I realized that the biggest factor in my way of breaking 130 at Monza was my driving. Now that I've finally done it I've pretty much restored the default setups for all tracks (mainly changing roll bar and camber/pressure) and my times haven't suffered. After four months of frustrating fun things are coming together more and more - instead of flying apart. Now all I've got to do is get very consistent and THEN see if I can't tweak my setups. Hmmm. Maybe in another four months? Regards, J Burrowes
