Pentium II 700Mhz performance from the AMD K6-2 3D 350... is that possible?
Source is respectable but not reliable... not even very respectable
actually. I have checked PCWorld and they say AMD are offering the
equivalent cheaper.
Would it be significantly faster than a PII 266 with GPL anyhow?
I did not know where to post this so I attempted to mask my CPU question by
reference to the game I need the upgrade for - fair?

Claim that AMD K6-2 350 matches a PII 700
A poster asked about a claim that the AMD K6-2 350 performs like a Pentium II 700. Others ridiculed it, noted no such Intel chip existed, and discussed overclocking Celeron 366 and PII chips.

Automated summary.
hahahaha an AMD K6-2 350 doesn't perform as a PII 700, and is even slower
then a PII 350. I would probably say its around a PII 300 speed, so it might
be slightly faster then a PII 266. Wait til the K7, now that might be much
faster then any PII or PIII.

where I can buy a PII 700? Then I can post my opinion on how the
performance compares to an AMD K6-2 350. Maybe I shouldn't jump at the 700
and i should just go ahead and wait for the PII 900 or PII 1000. Since the
PII 700 is out already, they can't be far behind.

PII 700MHz !!? you gotta be kidding - where did you see that ? The 500MHz
isn't due 'til March.
I'd appreciate a link to where you saw that one...
Nope.....not possible. Always remember.......you get what you pay for. If it
sounds too good to be true, it usually isn't true. We are about a year away
from 600mhz performance, 700mhz is farther away than that. Check Tom's
Hardware web site for benchmarks, or some other site that compares
processors. 3D-Now is not supported by many software companies yet, and with
the Intel Katmai coming, many are taking a second look.
Actually there is not PII 700. The highest the PII goes is 450MHz. The
PIII will start at 500MHz and go up from there.. PIII was released today..
Thursday the 28th of January.

Don't worry Daxe _almost_ all of us got your point.

Yea, it isn`t !
We are about a year away
Well, you CAN buy a C366A today, and run it at 5.5x 100Mhz, or ( whit some
luck, and good cooling ) at 112Mhz, and that thing is CHEAP !
Intel is slowing the bussiness down, so they can keep selling a *little*
faster (and more expensive) CPU`s from mouth to mouth !
So, 600Mhz isnt far away at all, I was running my system at 504Mhz (2.0V !!,
no extra cooling, no overheating, and it was a P2-300 ! ) for half a year,
now i run my C366A at 616 Mhz (2.2V, and an extra fun inside the case) and
it IS rock stable !
Whit celerons coming over 400Mhz factory settings, and P3`s over 500Mhz, we
are very close to be able to see that kind of perf in most of the serius
simracers PC, and we DO need that power to run GPL 100%, do we ? yea we do
! )
Back to the original question....no way, that AMD K6-2 3D 350 will never get
close to the perf of an Intel celeron of the same clock speed, not for GPL
anyway, maybe if the actual game DO uses 3Dnow! it is possible to gain some
speed, but the lack of 3dnow! support isnt looking good at all !

Tilus
sorry for the real bad english !
You miss understood me, I never said there were PII 700Mhz CPUs, just that
the AMD 350 doesn't perform as a PII 700 as the post before me stated
"Pentium II 700Mhz performance from the AMD K6-2 3D 350," nothing about PII
700 CPU anywhere, just that the AMD 350 gets PII 700 type performance, which
is just laughable considering the PII 450 crushes the AMD 350.

I don`t care if someone else had to use extra cooling, i know that this
first series of C366A are capoble of reaching 550+, and some 600+, and they
aren`t even mulipleyer locked (!), so you are do not have to use 5.5 multi,
if you wanna go higher/lower you are wellcome ! I bet it is going to change
real soon, but i don`t care until my CPU runs fine !
If you remember i posted the first rewiev of those Celeron 266`s running at
450, and those P2-300 running over 500 to this newsgroup a long, long time
ago, when noone ever know what a SL2W8 is, and no1 belived me eighter !
Thats it, it isnt fake !
Tell me what benchmars you wanna see !

sorry for the bad english
That's what I meant. Thanks for clearing it up. There is no P II available
from Intel.
Thanks for the feedback - but what's the K7 story. It sounds too perfect.

They are multiplier locked (as are most celerons) but not clock-speed
locked. Thus you can, switch from running at 66MHz x5.5 to running at
100Mhz x 5.5. Of course the chip won't run that hot so it'll be totally
unstable. (Unlike the C300 which was often stable when switched from 66 to
100 and thus often would run as a C450).

Like the stories I've read saying the new Celeron 400A runs like a PII
400. Even Tom's hardware said this.
I bought one, and it SUCKED. Comparatively, it ran about like a PII
266.
I dusted off the Credit Card and bought a Pentium II 450. Hell, almost
had to take out a 3rd mortgage!

I'm sorry....
This kind of over-crocking and the word "Stable" is an oxymoron.
I've had two PII300's, and neither of them would even stay up at 350Mhz.
And the new C400A's ain't all they're cracked up to be. At least the
one I tested wasn't. Comparatively, it performed like a PII266.

A Celeron is MUCH more likely
to be stable at speeds higher than it is rated for.
In a P2, the cache is on separate chips. While the P2 core is much more
likely to be capable of running at higher speeds, the cache chips are
running very close to their limit. When you overclock "a P2" it's the
cache chips that overheat and fail.
In a Celeron, the cache is on the same silicon as the CPU itself. And it
has nearly the same headroom as the CPU. Also, it's much easier to keep
the entire package cool enough to run.
I read this once on (I think) http://www.overclockers.com.
http://www.tomshardware.com may address the issue, too.
Mighty
Actually the L2 cache chips in the P2s are specificially matched to the half
the speed of the P2 core. So yeah, it is the cache chips that make the P2s
very un-overclockable. Take my P2350...works fine at P2400, but thats it.
Disable the L2 cache and I can get it running at 4.5x124=558. Noteable
exception to all this was some particular ss# P2300s which were really
P2450s that were only being run at 66mhz (4.5x66=300) FSB speeds.
That`s simply not true as it is, get a P2-266(sl2w7) and run it at 448 whit
no problems, or get a P2-300(sl2W8) and run it at 504-540Mhz, mine was
running at 540, whit 2.2V, and it wasnt even warm !
SL2 series uses cache chips previusly designed to use in 400 and 450 cpus !
Sure they do...but not all P2 created to be equal !
Celeron generates a LOT more heat then the regular P2, and P2-400, 450 is
cache cooled !
you can also modify the 266, 300, 350 models to be cache cooled !
Thanks,
Tilus
I think I can say with a certain degree of comfort that this is _not_
typical...
