This was posted by Bill Tillman a bit ago: "In Turn 1's forum a message was posted about Papy including a hidden cheat code in GPL to make your car faster! Too bad if this is so because a lot of Hot Lappers will have to do it all over again! Somehow when these things are discouvered an unfair advantage exists for a while but the playing field gets leveled again in short order." A few replied, making out like this was impossible and generally making fun of the inquirey. Now listen up, as this happened last nite, and I was there and saw it. I was hosting a kyalami race between 3 of us, not VROC. All logged on and i and another racer had not yet pushed the green to go practice. ONE racer did. He was waiting on us to enter so we could all start together. He started typing in chat to tell us to get our A** in. He never finished. a second later, while the 2 of us were still "outside", A message appears on the chat board to the effect " how do u stop it?" ????????, i asked "stop what? " He said my car. It's running on auto. It's driving its self. FAST..... I replied that i had no idea to get out and see if that stopped it. He let it drive itself a while longer. and got out and it quit and was not in that mode when he re-entered. He said that the car drove itself, shifted at the proper points braked at the proper points, and generally drove like hell, squealing the tires around the corners, and generally eclipsing the world record. THIS IS NO BS......I saw it and the fella don't BS around. Something took place. I saw it roar by on the replay screen. He was shaken and astounded. He apparanly hit a sequence of keystrokes in typing in chat to initiate this, and he has no idea what, as he wase'nt paying real good attention. But its there, waiting to be found again, OR prehaps its allready been found as the fella said u could'nt tell whether he was drivin or the "robot". Like lookin for the lost dutchman i guess. This happened.....last nite...for reals............. chipper

It could be an online bug. There doesn't seem to be perfect error checking of bad communication signals in GPL and some "noise" on one of your communications could have triggered odd behaviour. The code to drive cars in definitely in GPL - we all see that when we race the AI. I've seen some very odd stuff online. Stupid lap times. Half power brakes (that never locked). My pit board being shown in all sorts of places on the track. My times not being registered online.....and many others that don't spring to mind right now. I've never put these down to a cheat code, and I've always assumed them to be bugs. In all probability this is just another - I can't imagine Papy would do such a thing. Anyway it's a big deal of a cheat - use it and you don't get to race - that sounds a whole load of fun to me <ironic>. What this all means is the GPL is desperately in need of an online patch. Cheers, Paul

i was able to do the same thing on and off line,, first time was online under the same circumstances as you discribed and i have reliable witnesses and the second time was off line when i decided to try and recreate it and i was successfull after about two hours of trying to rember what i had been atempting to say in chat on line with out activating the chat by hitting the enter key after i had already typing my message,, i am really disappointed that it can be accomplished to make the car drive itself Barry

There is absolutely positively no way possible for any keystroke combination to cause the car to drive by itself. Are you sure you didn't just change the focus car by pressing V or Shift-V (these keys will allow you to 'ride' along with any other car on the track)? Eric

He he, haven't laughed so much in ages...... You really expect anyone to believe this? 8-) Yeah right, so he cannot remember what message he was going to type, ahem! 8-) Of course it did, and we *really* believe you, honest...... 8-) *Peter* #:-)
Easy to do... while sitting in your pits, hit the 'v' key. <g>

I was just practicing at Kylami with my uncle and Joe dawson the race had just started i was in a honda joe was in a lotus and i believe my uncle was in a cooper, i clicked the green button was sittting in my car in the pits,, started typing a message and hit enter then i noticed i had not hit enter to activate the chat and at the same time the car was rolling out of the pits didnt think anything about it til the gears started shifting and the gas started working itself then the car went into t1 and negotiated the turn on its own,, at this point i started typing to the joe and rick stating that the car is driving itself immediatley they started chating back so i dont think they were driving and this was at the very beginnning of the session so there could not have been anything in replay stored . i let the car drive 2 laps before hitting the escape key and re-entering the pits alll the time chatting with the two other people the wholetime this was happening,, maybe i did hit the v key but the other cars werent driving during this period and i had made now prior laps this happen as soon as i entered the pits and the very beginning of a practice session and i dont think the other 2 cars completed 2 laps prior to this happening,, i do not know alot about the game but i did think this was strange.. but i guess what i dont understand is were did the laps come from when everyone was talking to me when the car was doing this and and i had no prevoius laps to come from the replay. but any way i was just sharing what i thought was strange,,, Barry

Apparently the cheat is not using the "period" key. ;-) Dave Ewing
