GPL is OVERRATED!-My responce to the responces

Rebuttals to a 'GPL is overrated' poster

Regulars responded to a poster who said GPL took too much time for people with lives. Replies insisted many busy adults enjoy GPL and that persistence pays off, while some agreed it was too time-consuming, and the thread descended into spelling jibes and troll accusations.

Automated summary.

Here's my responSe to your 'responce'. The incredible variety of different track configurations in Burnout makes that really impressive (snicker) You see, so do I. I own a business and work 9 1/2 hours a day, I am also married and I have a 17 month old daughter and 3 dogs. They all get all the attention they should get. I do all the cooking at my house and anything else that needs to be done around here or on the four cars we own. I don't have a lot of spare time, and I don't spend all of my spare time practicing GPL, either. I spun out on the first lap I took in GPL and I spin out now and then these days when I am getting overzealous. It didn't take me weeks, days or even hours to be able to drive GPL successfully. Actually, it is a simulator, not a game. I have a load of FUN doing it or I wouldn't do it. GPL is lots of FUN. *YOU* don't have any fun with it. I wouldn't know, I haven't even opened either of the books that came with it. Actually, that's not true. I opened one to stick the other inside it so they wouldnt get separated. My point is that just because YOU can't drive a lap in GPL without spinning doesn't mean the sim is too hard or that there is anything inherently wrong with it..it means YOU can't drive it well enough to complete a lap. I am not obsessed with the sim, I don't spend hours practicing it and I have a very busy and full life, yet I can complete laps with no problems and even finish in the top 10 in some races. It's the exact same sim you are trying to drive, how come I can do it and you can't? I don't think it's the sim's fault :o) ~daxe "religion is remedial spirituality" -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com/ The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! -----------== Over 66,000 Groups, Plus a Dedicated Binaries Server ==----------

Yes but this GPL. You will learn the hard way with those cars. As you would in real-life. It's VERY fun for the market they aimed for. For that market (Hard-core simracers who have the time to master those cars) it's a work of art.. something that is so incredible the words aren't enough to descrive the accuracy of a Lotus going into the Masta Kink at Spa. If you prefer games that don't require a steep learning curve, heh Im sorry for you but GPL is NOT the title you should had bought. No. It's about the same size (if we add the two of them) to any previous Papyrus manual. At least they don't go with the current trend of putting it in HTML on the CD. Heck be happy you have a manual, there's soo many software these days with a 7page manual or so. As with OpenGL ;-) -= Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -= NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -= SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -= Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -= May the Downforce be with you... Dear Mr. "Responces" : Have a life? Seems to me that you spend your time mastering games such as "N2,Viper,SODA, [and] Burnout". Or are those games just so simple or you so talented that you mastered them overnight? I think if all the cards were on the table, we'd all "definatly" discover that GPL fans have elected to spend time, comparable to the time you spend on that **impressive** combination of games and tracks, mastering the GPL sim. Since you were so quick to ridicule large numbers of readers of this newsgroup with your statement about having a life, please post some of the details of that life of yours so that we can all compare notes. My bet is that since you had to tell us all that you "HAVE A LIFE," you don't. P.S. Smart that you started a new thread with you post, we'll need the extra room to read the responses.

> I figured I will start a new thread with my responce. > 1. I AM a good race driver. I can win at any track in N2,Viper,SODA, or > Burnout with100% difficulty. And you'd probably be good at GPL if you gave it a chance. You'll probably pick it up sooner than you think. Start with Monza (demo available) and work on to the difficult tracks. Chess, soccer, American football and even, heck, motor racing are all games. Does that make them any less worth investing time in? What is the point here? Ah! Well GPL is the most fun I've ever had on a computer. Oh, we shall have to agree to differ here. Well don't buy N3 - it'll be using the GPL physics engine. B etter t han m any I'v e s een. Hmm - GPL is good. Try it for a bit longer and you may find you like it (something like Green Eggs and Ham spring to mind here). Seeing as you like N2, SODA and Viper (all good sims) - I'd be surprised if you didn't end up liking it. Paul

Woo. Hoo. You, see, It doesn't take hours! Just a little patience and soon you're on your way. And it is not a game. It is a sim. The best sim ever :-) I too have a life outside GPL. Beyond going to school, I also have a business to run (age doesn't matter on the net) and I find time for a healthy social life and of course my girlfriend. I drive GPL on average for about half-an-hour to an hour a day. If you're not into GPL, fair enough. You're free to post your opinions here but just don't say that everyone who doesn't agree is wrong. Cheers! Graeme Nash http://www.karisma1.demon.co.uk ICQ# 11257824 1998 Xoom GP2 League Champion

On Sat, 16 Jan 1999 14:21:56 -0500, "Daxe Rexford" It's funny how people always equate being married to "having a life". My idea of "having a life" is doing something you like/want to do - regardless of what that is, as long as you enjoy it. If someone is happy watching paint dry, then they "have a life". Nothing I would enjoy, but as long as he/she is happy.
Newshou 16 Jan 1999#445674
What makes you think that N2 and Burnout or not sims, and only a "game" as you've stated? I don't enjoy those 2 forms of racing, but they ARE sims.

> I figured I will start a new thread with my responce. > 1. I AM a good race driver. I can win at any track in N2,Viper,SODA, or > Burnout with100% difficulty. I can win at bristol at 120%, but now after spending months at GPL and finally getting to the point where I can challenge for a win it is so much more satisfying (and fun) that I simply encourage you to keep driving it, slow down and let it come to you. I jumped into n99 when it came out and within a ten laps was beating the truck lap times at 100% BORING.I have to admit it took me a while to win n2, and when I first started driving gpl I thought it was assinine of papy to not put in a % adjuster, but I changed my mind, Not to forget that N3 will be using the physics of GPL, now that should be fun! JM
There's some people on r.a.s. who want to believe that GPL is hard because it's so real. Therefor, once they are good at it, it means they could race in real life too. I guarantee this is what goes through their heads on some level. It's happened before with other sims. Ask them how many hours they have invested in GPL too. It's usually the one's who have an unGodly number of hours invested in a sim who are first to criticise people like you. Thay just leave that bit of info out of their response. :-) They are ALL basically the same to me as far as difficulty. I've yet to equate success with any of them to real life potential and will never do so without making myself laugh. Try running a 1:37 at Suzuka in MGPRS2 and tell me it's easy. David G Fisher
>On Sat, 16 Jan 1999 14:21:56 -0500, "Daxe Rexford" >It's funny how people always equate being married to "having a life". I meant that being married carries with it a great deal of responsibility and time-consuming activity. I had a life before I was married, too. I think folks usually mean that one without a life has nothing to do and does nothing. I have the opposite problem, if anything. ~daxe -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com/ The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! -----------== Over 66,000 Groups, Plus a Dedicated Binaries Server ==----------

Some poeple don't have to spend hours getting to grips with how hard it is and to drive a lap without spinning. I bought GPL and went straight away into the gp cars. Went slow the first couple of laps on all tracks. (1 per weekend) After the couple of laps i was putting in some good lap times. I have already won a race at monza with no aids (using a cheapo joystick) Couple of spins here and there but i generally learnt the game quite quickly. (all tracks i can put up fast laps except for the ring at moment) The only time i really have for the game is couple of hours on the weekends and its a little hard getting straight back into it after a week. But the game is so good i will always try. I have tried nearly all racing games and all f1 games and looking back just shows me how bad they actually were compared to GPL. -- all opinions expressed while drunk, stoned and flying through clouds. I'm not paranoid. That's just a rumour started by people out to get me.
Congratulations. I'd take it back and get a refund if I were you. Andrew "I like GPL => have no life" McP PS You're right about D3D, it's come a long way... but only "recently" from what I've read. I wouldn't be surprised if Papyrus eventually add D3D support, but I think they had better things to spend their time on before release.

I would agree with the people who have said GPL is too hard. I have been able to be competitive at every racing game I have played, I can do ok at GPL but the time spent finding good set ups and learning each car and track is just too time consuming. I have a hard time believing anyone out there who says that they can be competitive at this game with little practice. It takes hours just to get one track/car combination to work competitively at a track. I personally dont have that much time. Even F1RS is much easier to learn and become competitive. They should have put a control for Computer AI like Nascar has, a highly adjustable control so everyone out there can enjoy fighting it out at their own level. That way we wouldnt even be having this discussion and the reviews would be more favorable and people could be having FUN quicker and for a longer time.
