MGPRS2: some observations

2 posts by 2 people · 01 Jan 1999 - 01 Jan 1999

While breaking in my new Celeron 300a (it's currently stubbornly holding to 374), I've been using GP2 in DOS7 and MGPRS2 in Win95. First, it's great to *finally* be able to get 20+ fps in GP2 with all graphics on. But I still can't get 25 fps without going over a PO of 100%. Onto RS2: I guess I can see why some love it and some stick to GP2 and question the driving model. Some things just seem to canned, the spins obviously for one. But doing some hot laps at Monza, some things kept nagging. One is the obvious understeer. I have the wings set at 3.2/2.2, should I modify this? At another point, I thought I realized what might be wrong. I seemed to glide far too much. Slowing down for the Parabolica, it seemed like if I didn't stay on the brake, the car just drifted through at constant speed. "Seemed" to, but I didn't check the speed. So I set up some tests where I would take the car to a certain speed, get off the throttle, and time how long it took to slow. The results surprised me in that they seem quite realistic. I observed the following: At very high speed (180 mph or so), the car slows at about 1G if I get off the gas. This is in accord with what I've heard about these types of cars. And a quick excel calc showed it to be reasonable. At lower speed, the deceleration was lessened, as it should be due to reduced drag. If in lower gears, it decelerated more quickly, again in accord with engine braking. The deceleration was a strong fcn of wing setting, again as it should be. So, at least in these areas, Ubi did a believable modeling job. I wasn't apriori expecting this, in fact thought I would not see it given my Parabolica nagging. So, take heart F1RS/MGPRS2 players!
Do some experiments adding some "toe in" and maybe a degree or two to your rear wing. David G Fisher should I modify this?
