N99 Sound Volume Very Low????

Low sound volume in NASCAR 1999

Several users found NASCAR 1999's sounds very quiet. The cause was traced to the spotter volume setting, which cuts other sounds above 50 percent, though not everyone found a good balance. One user reported that launching the executable directly instead of the shortcut fixed it.

N99 seems to be working fine on my system except for a very low sound volume. Of course I have the master volume and engine volumes all set to 100% and I can barely hear them. This is using a Windows98 volume that blasts me out of the room with GPL unless I turn its volume down substantially. All other games have more than enough volume (I almost always have to turn the internal volume level down). Any ideas? Is there some sort of .INI setting somewhere that could be scaling back the volume? I have the very same problem, NASCAR 1999 is very low in volume while GPL and even my Win98 sounds rattle the windows. Jim

My Nascar2 sound has less volume now that I have installed GPL. Really. Or maybe I'm losing my mind from too much racing. Don

I had the very same problem as you have. I have a Sound Blaster PCI 64 sound card, and had the exact same problem. What fixed the sound was new drivers that Creative Labs released on the 25th. Check for new drivers for your sound card and that may take care of the problem.

Here's why it may be so low for you. Check what volume you have the spotter at. At 50%, he's at full volume. Anything over that and all other sounds are decreased and the spotter is heard above everything else. I tried mone at 50% and the engine sound was phenomenal! Only trouble was, I couldn't hear the spotter. He was way too muffled. Try playing around with that volume and see what works best for you. Mark Jones
I already have the latest drivers installed. I would hate to hear it with the old ones!!! Thanks. >I had the very same problem as you have. Thanks...you have hit the nail on the head--at least for me. I can't get any positions on the sliders to work where I get reasonable car sounds and can still hear the spotter. Have you figured out a combination??? If so, please share it with us! This is obviously a bug in either the game or the sound card drivers. Are you using a SB PCI 128 or a different card? We need to know who to ask to fix this annoying problem. Marc.

I have a SB AWE64 (ISA) - exact same problem. Never thought I'd miss ole Ned's voice this much..... --------------------------------------------- "Today's problems were yesterday's solutions" Delete the 999 to email

On Sat, 5 Dec 1998 11:37:57 -0500, "Marc Collins" The answer to this problem is in the manual, bottom of page 29. Max volume for the spotter is 50%. If you set it at greater than 50% it CUTS the engine sounds and other sounds. I set the spotters voice down, and the engine sounds came back to where they should be. Still having a problem with getting a good balance though, where the engines sound good and I can stil hear the spotter. Seems like the whole thing should still have a bit more volume. Jim
Thanks...someone already pointed this out and also couldn't find an appropriate balance...and I can't...and the default settings sure don't give one. What was wrong with the settings in N2??--they seemed to generate no complaints. Oh, but this is an upgrade!!!! Marc. If you figure out some good settings, let us know. >On Sat, 5 Dec 1998 11:37:57 -0500, "Marc Collins" >>>> N99 seems to be working fine on my system except for a very low sound >>>> volume. Realizing that NR99 is running through windows98(at least for me anyways), I adjusted the main volume using the windows or soundblaster master volume control. Cleared up the problem instantly.
How did you clear up a problem that involves the balance of various sounds inside the game? What Windows setting allowed you to adjust the spotters voice sound versus say the opponents engine sounds? I hope you don't think all the rest of us reporting this problem are so moronic as to not have properly adjusted the master volume level in Windows 9x before taking the time to write here and fiddle with sliders and and ask for detailed help.... So if you have a specific solution to our specific problem, please report it here!!! Thanks, Marc. >Realizing that NR99 is running through windows98(at least for me anyways), I

The answer to the volume problem is listed below....he has already said it before. Set everyone to 100% and the Speech level to 50% and that fixes the problem. IFLY4DELTA

I tried your suggestion and I couldnt hear the spotter at all with it on 50% Have you tried this yourself? I know it says this in the manual, but it doesn't work!!! The only thing that seems to work in making the spotter text instead of audio..

Same problem here. If I turn up the system volume loud enough to hear N1999, the Windows startup sound scares the cat, throws the dogs into convulsions, and pisses off the neighbors. A cure _would_ be greatly appreciated! -Larry

I have the 128, and those drivers didn't fix mine :( -Larry > I had the very same problem as you have. I have a Sound Blaster PCI 64 > sound card, and had the exact same problem. You must not use a Windows startup sound :) -Larry > Realizing that NR99 is running through windows98(at least for me anyways), I > adjusted the main volume using the windows or soundblaster master volume > control. Cleared up the problem instantly.

If it doesn't work right with the industry standard, SoundBlaster, then what chance do we have? There were a lot of different sound cards listed in here. I don't think it's specific to a card/driver. As EA would say, "It's in the game" :) -Lary > >I hope you don't think all the rest of us reporting this problem are so > >moronic as to not have properly adjusted the master volume level in Windows > No I don't think this. I posted this elsewhere but I might as well post an edited version in this thread- If you use the shortcuts or .bat files that are supposed to be used to start the game you get LOW sound and no balance between spotter and engines. IF you go straight to the .exe file it is MUCH better! ie. double click nr199r.exe or nr19993d.exe from Windows explorer. ...I would assume this applies to the regular exe (nr1999.exe) also but I never tried it. This skips the 'intro' movie and takes you straight to the game. Hope this helps. It's at C:\Sierra\NR1999\NR1999.exe. Works great.
