You've got bigger issues if you can't get IE6 running without

There is an option to enable/diable Java in the settings area though.
You could also try the java enabled version of Opera too. Opera comes
in two versions, java and non-java, I use the latter. I don't need no
steenkin' java.
I'm trying to build a PIII computer with leftover parts for my wife so She won't keep
moving my wheel on my 'racing' box. It's all up and running but IE6 is constantly locking up and
acting flakey. If I redload and reinstall it, ie6 will work great..untill I shut the system down,
then the next time I fire up the machine...ie6 goes haywire again.
So I saw some mentions here on RAS of Firebird. I've used Mozilla in the past and this looks
like it's similar. It runs fine, no lockups like ie6. BUT...I can't get Java loaded and
enabled. Oh sure, the plugins installer SAYS Java was installed, but the browser
keeps refusing to run anything JAVA(which I NEED cuz that's what the Missus plays
online...java games)
So who gets the credit for WASTING my last two nights? Whos the genius? :)
And who knows how to get JAVA working on a win98se system??

I use Firebird on my Computer for about 1 year now.. to make Java
working, I hat to install the Java Runtime Environment (check out
www.java.com [_NOT_ java.sun.com] - the JRE at java.com works better IMHO).

Yea, but you need IE to get MS security updates because it uses
ActiveX. I had to use IE6 just to get a patch for Fifa2004 from EA.
They seem to think they are MS now and you have to get game updates by
using their web update exe which also uses ActiveX. That really pissed
me off.

Interesting. Shame you can't uninstall IE6 in WinXP...

Well the good news is....I Finally got it working. The original problem was ie6
would start to load, then freeze. Being the clever smart fellow I am, I attacked the
problem from the wrong angle. I tried 3 browsers, with and without Java and all of them
seemed to not quite function fully.
Finally I downloaded the newest beta of Java. While installing, it asked which
browser I wanted to install Java onto. I have Opera, Mozilla, Firebird and ie6 on
thr spare box I built. but even tho the installer was asking which browser, it only
displayed one checkbox for ie6. It is like the installer was either configured soley for
ie6 or my system was not correctly reporting the other browsers.
anyhow...to end this 4 night story...As soon as I got the beta Java installed,
ie6 took off and ran like it was supposed to. Pages loaded quickly and the
Java enabled games worked. So IF I had been born a smart and clever man,
I might have figured out that the reason ie6 wasn't working in the first place was
because it lacked a plugin. Oh well.
I still don't know why my leftover system would not install the other two
versions of Java properly. Or why the beta version of Java finally did
install smoothly. But whatever the reason. At least one browser is working
and that's good enough for me.
Thanks for your help and suggestions folks.

You should install, update and run SpyBot 1.2 and CWShredder.
I'm willing to bet you have Spyware messing with IE.

Interesting Browser, but does it have a built-in newsgroup reader? Right now, I use Netscape for NG
reading, but it's too damn unstable (crashes a lot). And I don't like Outlook's NG reader at all.

Why on earth do you want a browser with a built in newsgroup reader?
Just get a proper newsgroup reader (Agent, Gravity, Xnews.....).
