Guys, I just downloaded the GPING.EXE file and put it in my GPL directory and I keep getting this "Timed Out Opening Communication Channel" message when I try to join a race. I click on Join, it will start GPL, and I click on multiplayer, then I click on the host's IP address, and then I click the green button and that message appears after a few seconds. What's the problem?? Thanks, Aaron Markham
Are you running through on a win95 box that access the net through a linux gateway? If so, you cannot join a remote race, but you *can* host one if you have the proper routing and port forwarding in place on your gateway box. -- ========================================================= John Simmons - Redneck Techno-Biker (Zerex12) http://www.members.home.net/jms1/index.html John Simmons - Barbarian Diecast Collector http://members.home.net/jsimm/diecast_index.html If you want to send me email, go to either of the URL's shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================

What is this "linux gateway"?? I'm running GPL on a PII 400, Win98, and a 56K modem. Thanks, Aaron Markham

I see an EDU in your posting path... the problem you describe could be a simple timout due to a high ping _or_ being behind a firewall (.edu)... if you could post your exact ISP details this would help. I gather you're trying to connect via VROC... what kind of piings are you seeing in the games you are unsuccessfully trying to join? Do you have more than one IP address on your machine (both a LAN, and a dialup connection, for example)? If so, after clicking on the host's IP address, look at the "Connect Via" address on the left side of the screen and make sure that it lists the IP address for your dialup. If it doesn't, select your dialup IP address from the dropdown list. If that's not the problem, next time this happens write down the IP address of the host. Exit the game. Open a DOS box. In it, use ping (the normal system ping) to see if you get a response from the server (for example, if the host's IP address is 1.2.3.4, enter "ping 1.2.3.4"). If you get a lot of "Request timed out" messages, then you have a bad connection to that server. If you always have this problem, then you probably have a poor connection to the Internet. Look for info on tuning your connection on the VROC main page, and Alison's web site (there are links to it from the VROC page). Randy
