FIRST OF AL:L --------- I am DOUG ------------ Mika Vannikov is the name of the company I own (along with my wife) At the end of each and every message I sign my name. My BRAIN is working fine ---------- I am merely stating what many, many others are saying as well, and that is that there is a complete misnomer in GPL I happen to like the sim ------ but I am not going to commit myself to being a complete computer dweeb and sit in front of the computer screen for hours and hours at a time for months and years to gain the experience necessary to compete with the AI -------- when the "so called" intelligence will just adjust itself out of my range yet again. You may accept thiings as they are -------- but I expect to get what I pay for ------- and that is a sim that can be enjoyed in a competitive environment . Right now ------------ if you enjoy being lapped every ten laps or so and being a back marker then great --------- but I don't. This sim was advertised and being as close to the real thing --------- yeah right Seven seconds faster than they actually qualified at is NOT "real thing" ------------- it is a goof up ----- pure and simple. I have every intention to go to racing online because the individual play feature is so out of whack ------ it is laughable And I laugh at the people who tell me that it is OK and accept such "AI Intelligence" as a fact of the sim. DOUG
Have you downloaded the new program that allows you to tweak the AI settings so that they race more your style?? Additionally, Papyrus did not make this game with you in mind, they made it with all of us in mind. So - it is hardly surprising that you find the AI hard to race against. I find the AI impossible to race against. They are to damn perfect. HOWEVER - I have been reading this group for a while, and I know that if I really wanted to slow the AI down to my speed - I could. And easily. So - go out and locate that AI tweaker program (Alison Hines "Eagle Woman" site is a good starting point), adjust those bad boys until they run with you - and you'll be having a blast. Enjoy! A fellow slow racer! -Kevin

Doug, You seem to be stuck in the groove on this Kyalami thing... First of all, it was a *design decision*, not a "goof up". As others have tried to explain to you, in modeling the cars of the 1967 season, Papyrus choose to represent the performance of the 1968 SAGP, since that was consistent with the performance of the cars for the bulk of the 1967 season. You may disagree with the decision (and I'd be willing to hear you debate the decision, versus declaring it flat-out wrong, period, no reasons offered). You may think it would have made more sense to have Lotus 49s with Cosworth V-8s performing like the BRM H16-powered dogs Colin used at the '67 SAGP. Or it would have made more sense to have multiple cars available within a given marque (such as the 3 different cars Lotus used that calendar year, or the three cars that Bruce McLaren drove [an Eagle and two McLarens]), in spite of the extra development time spent on this trivial detail. Again, it was a conscious choice, not an oversight or unconscious error. Second, you seem to link this seven second disparity with your inability to keep up with the AI. *You* are driving the same car that set the times at the 1968 SAGP, why can't you keep up with the AI cars? It's two distinct issues, although you seem unable to separate them. There are AI tweaks available to slow down the AI if you like (or even speed them up :), why not use them and enjoy the game? Yeah, I know, tweaking the AI would sacrifice the realism of GPL, but something's got to give here... ;) This should be enlightening. NAR Northeast Regional Contest Board site - points and more...

HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU HAVE TO BE TOLD??????!!!!!!! The 7 second gap is because GPL models cars as of the end of the 1967 season. The 1967 Kyalami race was held in January, so the teams used their 1966 cars. When the cars that are modelled in GPL raced at Kyalami, in January 1968, the laptimes were around seven seconds faster than the year before! Will you ever get it? Well --- I'm dashed ----- If ----- I ---- know! Cheers! -- Graeme Nash You know what to do with "don't_spam_me"... http://www.karisma1.demon.co.uk/ ICQ# 11257824 "My car appeared to disagree with my preference for living"
Isn't he right in a way then? The online drivers should not be able to be way faster than the AI if the physics are correct and especially if the driving experience" is accurate. This goes back to posts by me and some others the week the game was released. The ability to drive loose, and fast, compared to the AI and real life drivers of the time seems out of whack. David, look at some photos or footage of the period...messrs Clark et al will demonstrate loose and fast driving! You can also look at some preliminary results of the world series thingo (R Magruder's) and see that many of the hotlappers finished weel down or not at all. A Jim Clark hotlap in GPL is v. quick, but his racelaps are more restrained. I reckon this is a pretty darn good shot at realism. Ben >Isn't he right in a way then? Vannikov) wrote among other things: Sorry my e=mail address didn't show up. I've been tinkering with providers to see if I can get a better connection service. I don't hide. I don't accept things as they are, I use tools that other people provide to enhance my enjoyment. At times I also shut up and read what others (that know more than I do) have to say. A number of people on this newsgroup have made wonderful contributions for all of us that enjoy GPL. Either by sharing knoweldge or making programs and patches, they have enhanced the GPL experience. Almost every game of merit these days has people who extend the range of the original game maker's vision. Look around and enjoy. I will not get into an extended arguement with you, I need to get to Holland and practice for my next on-line race. It just bothers the heck out of me when people get upset over small things that can be corrected by freely available tools. Please take the game back and get your money returned if you feel you got ripped off. Me, I will continue to attempt to get that perfect drift through a 5th gear corner.... Jeff Haas
