K6-2 300 + GPL = 6.45 fps ( with Voodoo2 )

12 posts by 9 people · 14 Nov 1998 - 16 Nov 1998

OK, I saw post like "my K6-2 rocks in GPL" and I thought there is something wrong with my system. I posted an article here in R.A.S. that GPL is unplayable on K6 and somebody said that there is something wrong with my system. So let me ask you again how much fps do you AMD owners get at Monaco, 19 opponents, all graphic details to the max. ( and I mean ALL.. mirrors, detail bias all the way to the right... ), 800x600, 5 sounds, analog controller, starting at the back of the field. I have Voodoo2 8 MB. I know you will say that I must be crazy for having all graphics maxed out but that is just easier to describe than " I have textures on cars but not on fences, etc. ". I would really like you guys to post your frame rates so I can decide on what to do: stick to Super 7 format with AMD chips ( waiting for that K6-3 500 ;-) or go with Slot 1 w. Celeron300A. In the mean time I will just practise, nothing wrong with frame rate in free training!! Borut

I don't think you're at all crazy for turning all graphical options on... It probably makes no difference on your system. My hardware is different than yours; I only have a voodoo 1 with my 'celeron 450a.' Yet running exactly the same gpl settings (you _can_ do 800x600 with a v1 in gpl) on monaco etc. etc. I get 15 fps, dipping to 13.5 or so as we pull away from the starting line. (Of course with my puny v1 I normally play in 640x480). So of course your cpu is the limiting problem, and even if it were 400% faster than it is now, you wouldn't quite make 30 fps. So unless the k6-500 is going to be 5 times or so as fast as what you've got, it would probably be a disappointment. rob. <snip> <snip>

I use a Pentium 233 MMX System with Voodoo 2 8mb version, 128mbs ram, sound blaster 64 value, and 6.4 udma hd. I have all graphix maxed out except for detail which is on low, 1024 x something view, and 3 cars at anywhere from 14-32fps in the pack on any track with the cokcpit view. Oh yea, don't go for the celeron, terrible results, slower then pentium -- Sincerely, Mark F. / SimRacing Web * SimRacing Network The All SimRacing News Server Is Located At: News Group Server Name: simracing.dyn.ml.org Port: 119 Login/Password: Annoymous Connection Allowed Restrictions: None
Duplicating your setup I got 13.7 fps at the start behind all the other cars. My system is a PII-350 (running at 360- ), 128 mb ram and a CL-V2 12 mb card. Regards K.S. Br?nnick

At 640x480, it runs between 24-30fps again with 6 cars. And I havent even overclocked it with GPL yet......maybe I got a good Celeron :-) -- Nathan Wong http://www.nectar.com.au/~alfacors - Super Touring - Alfa Romeo - - V8Supercars - CART -

Even with max detail there still doesn't appear that much going on on-screen to explain this lack of performance. Other graphically superior games simply runs rings around this stupid game.
That makes PII nearly twice as fast as AMD K6 MHz to MHz. You must go with Intel in GPL! BOrut

I run K6 2 300 64 meg sdram and Hercules Thriller , 800*600 with 5 opponents and detail about 1/3 from left and get 26 at start and 36 after thing thin out. no bs On Sat, 14 Nov 1998 19:38:37 GMT, "Borut Srebotnik"

Borut Srebotnik heeft geschreven in bericht Hi, I get same fps as you with K6-2-300, 64 MB PC100 RAM AGP, Hercules Thriller 8 MB AGP. Reading Tom's Hardware Guide I would advise to wait for the K6-400 that should be as fast as the Intel P2-400.(It should be out for the end of this year). So untill then, just lower your detail bias and your rig will be doing fine. Harald

Rob heeft geschreven in bericht ... 640x480). I would advise you to get a new Videocard. Voodoo2 or Hercules Thriller3D. This should give you a major FPS increase. (a friend of mine got a 10 fps increase with a Thriller compared with his old Voodoo1 on his P2-233). Regards, Harald

Food for thought... Abit BH6 Intel Celeron 300A 64 meg PC100 Hercules Thriller 3D 8meg/AGP 8bit ISA sound card / CH Autocard3 (ISA joyport) two CH Mach I joysticks The set-up you described (Monaco/800x600/all graphics/19 AI/5 sounds) At 300 MHz (66 MHz FSB)... At the back of the grid (stationary) 12 fps Lowest fps under motion (no collisions) 10 fps (if you have collisions it can drop to 7 or so) At 450 MHz (100 MHZ FSB)... At the back of the grid (stationary) 20 fps Lowest fps under motion (no collisions) 17 fps For me, the Celeron is the way to go here. For you AMD rebels, take heart in paying Intel only $150 or so for a CPU that offers performance that they charge hundreds more for... :) NAR Northeast Regional Contest Board site - points and more...
