Fighter Sim Group?

Racing fans discuss combat flight sims and newsgroups

Tony Jester asked for the best combat flight sim newsgroup and was directed to comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim, which posters said was nearly dead. Members reminisced about Digital Integration's Tornado, Hind and EF2000, recommended Falcon 4 Allied Force and Enemy Engaged: Comanche vs Hokum, and shared tips on running old titles on modern hardware.

I probably still have a set of Tornado diskettes around somewhere. It was good and I flew it a bit. Never got heavily into it, probably because of racing sims. Actually, I did get deep into EF2000, which was post-F3. That's the last combat flight sim I really pursued. I'd love to fly it even now. I wonder how well it would run on a current computer with unaccelerated graphics? I've tried to get into the various versions of Falcon 4 over the years, but it just takes too much time - not only to learn the systems, but to fly missions. Not much instant gratification compared to online racing :) Pat Dotson

I can now tolerate the idea that some people (especially non-Brits) might not have been 100% bowled over by DI's religious experience in the form of software. I have less tolerance for those who didn't feel the earth move when GPL was released. :-) Andrew McP

Maybe I could find them on Ebay or something. Thanks!
[email hidden] (Tony Jester) wrote: > Of the old combat sims, which ones > are worth having? How long is a piece of string? :-) The trouble with older sims is they're a heady cocktail of nostalgia, unfulfilled expectations, and outdated hardware. Usually they work better in memory than RAM. ;-) You can have a lot of free entertainment via Underdogs though... http://www.the-underdogs.info/genre.php?id=8 Some games will require dosbox and sacrificing chickens to get running, but that's half the fun. It has an arcade mode which is a lot of fun, and is still probably the best attempt at putting soldiers into a flight sim. You even get to transport them around. http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=511 Sadly, as with so many sims (did I hear someone say GPL2?), there was never a sequel to build on excellent foundations. It does work in WinXP, but without sound (for me) or joystick control. Andrew McP

FalconAF isn't half bad with all the addons, skins and so on out there. I'd suggest checking out www.frugalsworld.com to get you started on what's available. I agree about the endless ingress / egress times during campaign missions in F4:AF though, I guess it simulates the "hours of boredom followed by moments of terror" aspect of modern warfare quite well. cheers, uwe
Well, that site is full of great information. Unfortunately, it's also a spyware haven. Be careful what you click on! All those smiley's, cursors, screensavers, etc... are harbors for spyware/adware. -Larry "Uwe Schᅵrkamp" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:47d137f9$[email hidden]...

Second best DI sim after you-know-which-one. I remember I was a bit sceptical to the primitive Hind, compared to their previous Apache sim. But when I actually tried it, it turned out to be much more fun :) And as you say, the infantery-modelling was probably the best put into any flight sim yet. > Sadly, as with so many sims (did I hear someone say GPL2?), there was > never a sequel to build on excellent foundations. Yes, too bad there never was any follow-up. Though I am making a new 3D cockpit for the Hind in EECH, and hopefully I'll be able to resurrect some of the gameplay from Hind also :) -- am

I just installed Jane's F15 and F18 to XP. I have F15 working with glide emulation on my 8800GT using a glide wrapper. Both work great still and no graphics glitches in F18 like the last time I tried it on XP with an ATI video card.

Never noticed that, probably due to the fact I'm running Firefox on Linux with noscript and adblock. The first thing you want to do on frugalsworld is disable signuature displays in the forum, though. Looks like folks over there like their sigs as large or larger than their egos ;-) All the best, Uwe --

It's not the site. It's certain advertisements. And Arne's still doing brilliant work modding it. The SimHQ EECH section is a good place to read up on what's going on. There's a demo available (which can be heavily modded) from here... http://www.eechcentral.com/wiki/index.php?title=Demo The last two links still seem to work. Andrew McP... wondering why this group has more flight sim chat in it than the flight sim group :-)

A while back I bought that combo pack that has LOMAC, Pacific Fighters, and IL2. Not bad for $20! I installed Pacific Fighters and LOMAC over the weekend. Never flew LOMAC before. I might be able to get into it. The A-10 has always intrigued me, and it looks to be well done in this sim. PF was disappointing because it doesn't support TH2Go display modes. That's a deal breaker for me. I also found that F4AF won't do triple screen. Will IL2 do triple screen? The thing that got me thinking about flight sims again is that show on the history channel where they re-create air battles using computer animation/simulation. It's awesome! Even my wife got interested in it :) Anybody seen that show? Problem is, ARCA should be arriving any minute. This flight sim lark may be short lived :) Pat Dotson

IL-2 and PF use the same game engine so the answer is no. Those games do support wide screen resolutions though if you change a couple of settings in the conf.ini file. Edit the conf.ini file in the root directory as follows: [window] width=1680 height=1050 ColourBits=32 DepthBits=24 StencilBits=8 ChangeScreenRes=0 FullScreen=1 DrawIfNotFocused=0 EnableResize=1 EnableClose=1 SaveAspect=0 Use3Renders=0
