PII-350MHZ AND GP2?

Hi, does anyone of you know how gp2 and a PII-350MHz CPU go together (I mean: Full resolution at how many frames? etc. etc.) Thanks!!! -- Erik van Duijn Katwijk, Holland ******************************** * One minute silence for the * * disasters of this Century. * * Let they never occur again: * * * * - Titanic '12 * * - Hiroshima '45 * * - Gulf War '91 * * - Windows '95 * * - Windows '98 ???? * ********************************

Can't tell you 'bout the framerate, but this turned out to be a totally new game to me. Wow! Had a P166 before, and now with this 350 PII GP2 doesn't only look better (I can finally turn on that sky texture), car handling has improved a whole lot. And yes, it runs smooth as silk.

Just fixed up a pal with GP2 on his new Dell PII 350. GP2 doesn't have a frame counter, but processor occupancy was still above 100% during a replay at Imola with all graphics on. Turned off the sky and it was fine; it really gives new life to the game. My pal hadn't quite seen the point of computer games before, but after about ten minutes, he said "damn, this is like a drug!" Another one bites the dust.....His wife just gave me "the eye". Steve B.

Not sure about a 350 but I just got my new Gateway 450 running and the first thing I installed was GP2. I had a 150 b4 and it ran like a dog but now everything is turned on and what a dream!!! Just like a brand new game! It's amazing that I've had this game for 3 years and I could never enjoy it till now. Cheers!

Runs also great on a PII-300Mhz!!! -- Greetings :)RuuD? +------------------------------+

I got a celeron 300A overclocked to 450 since a month ,on most of the track with all details and 25 fps the PO occupancy average is around 70 , 80% excepted at Monaco where the higher value is 120% (the average remains above 100%) I think that with a P2 350 , the PO occupancy is not a lot higher Jean http://www.bhmotorsports.com/gpl/hotlap/index.html (GPL page) http://www.nat.fr/homepages/estori85/welceng.html (GP2 page)

I am new to GP2 (believe it or not!) but what does the term "PO occupancy average" and how can you tell if you are getting 30+ fps correctly? I've alway heard that GP2 runs slowly, but it seems to run fine on my PII300. Thanks, James

Hi, nice to hear that. I can imagine what you mean by "it is a totally new game" I have to get rid of my Cyrix 166+ and buy a PII-350 or higher (unfortunately the cpu's higher than 350 are still relatively expensive, although I hope for a price fall soon) By the way: What is your frame rate at Monaco with full detail(and off course SVGA)? -- Thanks in advance for replying! Erik van Duijn Katwijk, Holland
I am new to GP2 (believe it or not!) but what does the term "PO occupancy average" PO means Processor Occupancy, i.e.: how much "work" the processor is using for the game. Theoretically it should be a little less than 100 but, in case of crashes, it is advisable to bring it down even more, let's say 70-80 (an even lower value than that would be great but hard to do with slower systems in SVGA-mode and full detail). You can get the value for the PO by pressing the "o" key during the game. Also look at the difference between tracks like (for instance) Interlagos and Monaco (especially at the start)!!! Yes, it is really track-dependent as well as detail- and mode- (VGA/SVGA) dependent. and how can you tell if you are getting 30+ fps correctly? again: press the o-key and tune it to a value (if possible) lower then 100. I usually tune it when racing on Monaco (during the start for instance). Monaco is a real CPU-time-eater and if the PO is OK there, it should be OK elsewhere. I've alway heard that GP2 runs slowly, but it seems to run fine on my PII300. But at the time GP2 was released, those monster-pc's where not available yet. My opinion is that GP2 is not so slow at all, CONSIDERING IT DOES NOT MAKE USE OF 3D/3DFX-CARDS. THE MAIN CPU HAS TO DO ALL THE WORK, WHILE IN NEWER GAMES (F1RS,GPL etc.) THAT IS SHARED WITH THE 3D/3DFX-CARDS. -- Greetings, Erik van Duijn Katwijk, Holland ******************************** * One minute silence for the * * disasters of this Century. * * Let they never occur again: * * * * - Titanic '12 * * - Hiroshima '45 * * - Gulf War '91 * * - Windows '95 * * - Windows '98 ???? * ********************************

If you set the game for 25 fps and you get PO of over 100% then you are not getting 25fps. What the game does is display 25 frames per second but not in real time if the PO is over 100%. For example if we set the frame rate in the game to 20 fps and the PO was never over 100% and you then turned a lap at an even 1:00 then one minute of time off your wris***ch, real time, would have elapsed. If you set the game to 25fps and then the CPU couldn't render the frame and was too slow and the PO stayed at 125% for that one lap. The game says that you just turned a 1:00 lap time but your wris***ch shows that one minute and fif*** seconds really passed. What happpens is the game slows down to try and render every frame you tell it too and even though you may have the game set to 25fps you get a slide show. Your first reaction is that this is the stupidest thing you have ever seen in a game, but not really. If you can set the graphic options so that you never see over 100% PO then you know that you are really getting the 22 fps or whatever you have it set to and that it is locked at that frame rate. Games Like Papyrus GPL do not have a fixed framerate and it will fluctuate during the game. On modest equipment this can casue you to lose control of the car when the frame rate take a nose dive to 10fps when you were just sailing along at 20fps. In GP2 you could set the frame rate to 15 fps and keep everything smoother while driving. I used to play GP2 on a P120 and kept my frame rate set to about 15 that way the frame rate wasn't too eratic. With a PII300 or higher you should be able to run at about 21fps - 25.6 fps with everything on at 640 x 480 maybe more. 25.6 is the max the game allows I believe.

James, PO = Processor Occupancy, the figure that you get when you push the "O" key during play. Whenever it goes over 100, the game slows down (need a whole story to explain this...). The problem is that the game doesn't drop frames, it stretches gametime. Framerate is maximum 25.6 You only get the correct framerate as long as PO stays under 100.
