Voodoo 2 SLI and GPL

11 posts by 8 people · 22 Oct 1998 - 01 Nov 1998

I currently have a 8 Meg Diamond Monster Voodoo 2. Due to the recent price drops I am thinking about buying another one. How much of an increase in GPL will I see? Enough to buy a new one? I can currently race with 15 AI, have everything turned on and the detail slider in the middle at 800x600. At the start of the race the lowest fps I get is 20. Will this number increase by 4 or 5 frames? I would like to race with a full field and possibly a higher resolution. Anyone out there have 2 8 meg voodoo 2's? Please post. Thanks, John

i am using this combo ... but you won't notice an incredible increase of your framerate :(( if your Processor is running below 300MHz there might be none at all. maybe above 400MHz there's a noticable increase. (speaking of fps ... that's all for GPL !! in other games i really have much more fps with sli vs non sli .... but who really cares about 90fps instead of 60fps?) BUT ... just the possibility to run games in 1024x768 is worth the 2nd Voodoo ! -- Surf Usenet at home, on the road, and by email -- always at Talkway. http://www.talkway.com

John You don't say what your system is but from the figures, I'd guess a mid-range P2. Essentially, an SLI combo won't help with running a full field. The problem is one of CPU power to handle the AIs. Where it will help is in higher resolutions and graphically intense situations. Worth doing? I have a PII 333 overclocked to 416Mhz and have found SLI worthwhile mainly because there is no easy/cheap way of upping my CPU power to 500Mhz. If I'd been able to choose, a 20% increase in processing power would have been a better compromise. So, SLI because it's relatively cheap and resolves some problems. You should check out the new reference drivers from 3dfx, worth 10-20% but some people have had problems with them. Also experiment with "Don't sync buffer swaps . . . " setting - again, 10-20%! If you want more details, email me.

I forgot to say I have a 266 Celeron overclocked to 400. From what i have read so far, the verdict so far is to GO GET ANOTHER ONE. Thanks, John

I have a Celery 300 clocking at 464 and two V2s. Got several pals running different kind of setups, including PII, Rendition 2200, and other nice hardware. Wouldn't swop with anything, and Im not kidding ... Knudse. If in doubt ... overtake. .

Just curious if anyone has gotten GPL running with an AMD K6-2 3DNow! CPU and voodoo2 graphics board. AMD's web site says that the voodoo2 (glide 2.5 and up) supports the special (MMX) instructions of the K6-2. Supposedly by using this set of instructions, the floating calculations can beat a pentium II. If someone has this setup, please post some stats for your system and fps. Thanks P.S. Pls forward a copy via email to me in case I miss it here. Jay
I have K6-2 300 with voodoo2 8 mb. When I'm alone on the track it is smooth all the way around the tracks. With >10 AI cars it isn't playable ( all details, no texture in mirrors, only track and cars in mirrors, detail bias at the middle ). It isn't playable in that sense that it's a VERY noticable drop in fps. And it is a difference between 30 and 36 fps. I can't drive nearly as fast as in training. Glide 2,5 doesn't support 3d-now and probably never will. Glide 3 should support it, but it isn't backwards compatible with glide 2, so no luck for us AMDers. God damn 3dfx!!! I could kill guys that make drivers for 3dfx! If you just look at what AMD did for Quake2 with it's 3d-now optimized Quake2 drivers! Intel is still the best for ***, love it or hate it! Interesting. I get an 30+ fps just about everywhere except the starting line, when it drops to around 20 if I'm at the back of the grid, more the closer I am to the front. At Monza, during online play, I consistently get 36. That's with cars/track in mirror, clouds off, detail bias at around 10%, 19 AI cars. Oh - and the lighting etc off, too. (Those top right check boxes..) The system: K6-2 300, Epox MVP3 motherboard, 64M 100MHz SDRAM, Creative Labs Voodoo2 (8M), Diamond Stealth 3D 4000 main video, Soundblaster Live. The biggest difference I've seen was moving from a AWE64 ISA card to the SBLive. MAJOR difference in steering response (TM Nascar Pro.) And a couple FPS too. Now to replace my ISA EtherNet card with a PCI one, so I can get rid of that bottleneck during online play... Only real problems I have is dealing with warping online (I host from a cable modem) -- I get 'warp hynosis' instead of watching my line. And the SBLive has lost sound a couple times. VERY distracting. I noticed, btw, that both times it happened I was passing a AI-driven Ferrari. *shrug* Systems are different. But I'd SERIOUSLY suggest tuning your BIOS - it may help. And I agree Intel is still the way to go. I should get my PII 450 in the next couple of weeks.
Move slider to 50-60% and report back, it will probably drop your fps considerably, Borut. >>I have K6-2 300 with voodoo2 8 mb.
